I started going to school at UNC Charlotte in 2010. Before coming to college, I knew nothing of Charlotte atheletics, having grown up in the Raleigh area. I consider myself a pretty big sports fan and still had no knowledge of our history. Frankly, had I never found this forum while in school, I never would have understood our relevance in the collegiate sports landscape (I.e. - '77 final four run, Lutz run of NCAA appreances).
Fast forward to the present where I’m now a UNC Charlotte graduate and a diehard Charlotte sports fan. Reading this forum for the past 3 years or so sometimes clouds my judgement of exactly where we are as an atheletics program. Most people on this forum have such a positive view of our university, sometimes I forget how irrelavent we really are. I realize the “negativity” that exists here, but those “negative” views are closer to reality than pessimism.
Every time I talk about any of our programs to coworkers, friends, or even fellow alumni, I get condescending views of our programs. I wish I could be bitter about this, but honestly I understand because there has been nothing to be excited about with any of our programs other than soccer in the last 10 years.
I know nothing I’m saying is new. Rather than repeating what most here have already said, I’m just asking for some optimism here. Why should I continue to support my school’s atheletics programs? Why should I consider buying season tickets to football or basketball? Why should I waste time out of my schedule to watch any Charlotte sports?
I’m in no way a bandwagon fan when it comes to sports. I don’t need national championships. But I do need more hope than where most of our atheletics programs are at now, and I don’t think I’m alone in that thinking. If I can’t be sold on where we are now, what can be done as a regular alumnae to help? Can we organize a petition to achieve anything? Can we all write to someone/somewhere with a common theme to bring positive change? Can we come up with donations with a common cause? I’m willing to be as proactive as possible within reason. I just want to see our atheletic programs succeed.
Our football and basketball programs should be much improved in two years. Right now sucks but I’m excited about the future. Judy and maybe Phil should be gone in a couple years too.
I’m not going to try to do any of those things. What I’m going to ask you to do is to remember that the University isn’t really a physical entity, but a concept. An idea. That idea doesn’t belong to any one person, chancellor, trustee, or athletic director. The University belongs and exists to those who still hold that idea important to them. Whatever you do in terms of support, please don’t abandon the idea that we can make the University great. Our mission is academic in nature but athletics is an anchor point for alumni once they graduate and (hopefully) a source of pride for students, faculty, administrators, alumni and the community. Being that we can’t legislate ourselves into greatness like UNC Chapel Hill and we don’t have the endowment of Harvard, we’re going to have to work for it. So please, don’t abandon the idea. Stay on this board, make your voice heard and help us work towards making the University and all of its programs great.

In theory I agree. But…
Charlotte is a UNC town. At 42, I now believe UNCC sports aren’t allowed to achieve by design. We have no chance via chancellors the UNC system provides us, which control AD. Soccer final 4s are allowed. But football and basketball will be controlled and kept in their place to exist or die out. That’s what the evidence points to. CHP has how many NCAA appearances?
If Lambert got to a bowl game this year, Judy or Phil would find a way to stop future progress by design. I’m telling yall- UNCC isn’t allowed to achieve in money sports. Ncsu is only state school with political punch to exist freely.
It’s the sole reason Judy keeps a job despite zero production, I would argue her boss and his bosses love it.

Good post… I support our athletic program as much as anyone and am tested by lack of success. But I am very excited that we have football and as much as we wanted more wins this year we have recruited well and are building to the future. Football is a process and next year we will have a full senior class for the 1st time, although even then those players were recruited to play against FCS teams, something we must still remember.
