St Joe's Postgame

The other irony of the game, besides losing by a single point, is that Wilderness got injured again. He closed out his Niner career on an exercise bike.

THAT WAS NOT A DAMN FOUL!

But even if it had been, a block with 4 secs. left, tied ball game, winner goes to the conf. tourney, loser goes home, don’t call sh*t. He missed it because of the block, to bad, let it go to OT for the players to decide, not the refs.

When have the refs done us any favors this season, especially during conference play? Two of the worst calls I’ve seen as a Niner fan happened to us this season: the phantom double-dribble at SBU, and the BS technical against Braswell for protecting the ball after being hacked by Xavier. It was truly fitting, and when the whistle blew I was not surprised.

This season? How long have you been following Niner ball? I can count on one hand the number of times we have gotten ā€œhomeā€ team calls since we moved into Halton. Refs hate us…

Melvin Levitt will disagree with you there.

Oh, I know, just keeping it within the current timeframe.

So Major ends the season with zero technicals. This is not the Niner ball that I know.

I don’t like that he didn’t get any. There were a few times he should have pushed it and got on based on the ref conduct.

Why do people think that getting on the officials will result in a better officiated game? Major needs to ā€œget more timeā€ with the officials in time outs and express his concerns, but yelling at them and getting technicals doesn’t do you any good.

If you’re an elite and respected coach? Sure. But a rookie coach yelling at officials won’t get anywhere.

I don’t think Bobby’s technicals ever helped. If you’re good enough you can win in spite of poor officiating.

I don’t know that he should have gotten a technical, but he was the opposite of confrontational.

There were a few times I thought he should have stood up for our players more. I can imagine that it’s a delicate balance, and involevs having a good read on your (coach’s) gravitas, and the personalities of the refs.

A calm, but firm word here and there seemed called for, several times.

Yeah this is more what I was thinking. And if he had gotten a T in the process then fine. I don’t mean he should have gone out and got one just for the hell of it.

He should have gotten a T for hitting the side video boards in that one game. I know I would have.

That is true! I was pretty happy when he did that and as the year went on he showed more emotion on the sideline. I know he is a young HC so he will learn when is the right time to push it, how far he can push it and if need be pick up a T as a way to back up his team.

It certainly is a fine line to walk and with a year under his belt and developing relationships with the refs I expect next year to be a little different.

I wonder if CHP instucted him to refrain from getting a T.

Considering big $ boosters complained about Lutz getting hot about 4-5 years ago, & then his wife 2 years ago, I’m pretty sure Major is on a leash. Some of our big boosters tend to be the wine & cheese crowd who think we should know our place.

I don’t really care that he didn’t get one. You can say what needs to be said to an official discreetly without shouting profanity at them. There were a few times when I said to my dad, ā€œMajor needs to get on those officials about ___________ā€, but he in fact may already have in his own way. He’s just totally opposite of Lutz, and so long as the players know that he’s got their back I’m fine with his method.

The closest I personally saw him come to getting a T was at the Xavier game when the tried to screw us with the bogus technical for the elbow. He didn’t hold much back then.

[color=green]I don’t want Braswell to start after seeing his performance throughout the season, unless he works significantly on his post-up game over the summer.

Yes he needs to improve on defense, and needs to hone his offensive game also, but we don’t have any better options in the post. If Chris improves just a little more than he did last offseason, he’s going to be just fine. He played half the season with no protection in the post after Phil left, yet he increased his ppg this season. His rebounding dropped, but all of his other stats are pretty much the same as his freshman season when both Shamari and Phil were in the lineup to help relieve some of the double teams that he drew post-Phil. He has things to work on for sure, but hopefully he’ll get to play the 4 most of the time next season instead of the 5 and he will average near a 15-10.

Braswell could transfer to most other programs and start.
