Stadium expansion and 2015 opener?
This whole scenario with UNCC facilites, fans, attendance, and finding new followers is identical to growing a church.

We have the 1980’s pastor whos had his/her church 30 years, who has a few old donors that are 80yr old keeping the lights on, but hasn’t had a new member in months. Oh and there are thousands of members that haven’t attended Sunday svc in years, but come on xmas eve. There is still an old time choir behind her singing hymns putting the congregation to sleep.

Meanwhile, dozens Elevation types of churches built all around us with modern displays, modern feel, this century multimedia, music equal to Coldplay on stage, social media, and logo/brand. Also throw in a young current leader who connects to THOUSANDS of millenials, gen x, gen y. And probably picked off alot of your members being enthused about something better.

I’m not an Elevation guy, but admire the growth and tactics to gain audience. The 49ers need a Furtick type leader. Especially at a school everyone knows the biggest statistic is young alumni. Its a sleeping giant.
I must be going CRAZY, because I’ve been agreeing with Metro A LOT lately. People want to be energized, they want something to be excited about. Most importantly, and this is why mega churches do so well, they want to feel like they are a part of something special, but open to anyone. We don’t project that image at all. We project small, closed off, flat energy.

If ECU can get 45k to come out to consistently to Greenville, we can get 20k out to UCity 6 times a year.

I would be fine with not expanding (although preferably, I’d like 25k stadium), but for god sakes can our AD just communicate with us? Tell us what they are thinking?

Just another tally, in the list of incompetence that our athletic department demonstrates.

This is my main gripe. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems they project the attitude of not caring and even worse, the attitude that we fans do not deserve to know what is going on. Or maybe they are just lazy and out to lunch.

When you have no pressure to achieve greatness or take risks, this is what you get…

Not trying to offend but the Elevation analogy is troubling. Mega-churches don’t have to visit the nursing homes, bury people, marry people, etc. 80 year old’s at mainline churches are not just money to keep the lights on. They are people that ministers and congregations must take care of as part of God’s work. It would be much more profitable to abandon the old crumbling buildings, the old people, and go find some millennials in the nice part of town to market to.----To take it back to your analogy, why doesn’t the athletic department dump the non-revenue sports so they have more money to market and recruit for football or basketball? How about once attendance goes up, we start charging students for their tickets? #FurtickforAD ;D

Maybe we should give out coloring books so the kids can color in pictures of Judy and Phil like they do Furtick at Elevation lol

clt reads that ucity stinks

clt reads that elevation only has churches in nice areas of town

clt notices that elevation has a church in ucity.

clt’s mind is blown.

Doesn’t change the fact that UCity is a low income area that has been failed by city leaders for decades.

Make endzone tickets dirt cheap if you have to. There is no excuse to not fill up the smallest stadium in FBS.
Winning always makes selling seats easier. With that said our AD sucks at selling what we have. I agree with Bo make the endzone seats dirt cheap. Market the hell outta football in the spring and summer. We went all through the summer with very little marketing that we would be embarking on our first FBS season. That is on the AD. Blaming lack of attendance on losing is exactly what the AD does, look for excuses rather than find solutions.
There are people in Charlotte (some of them Charlotte graduates) who are not aware that we have Division 1 sports. I can’t even begin to imagine trying to explain to such people the difference between FBS and FCS.

That staggering lack of knowledge is brought upon by apathy. Apathy happens because we have an AD that is horrible at engaging not only with the student body but with the community at large, alumni and non-alumni.

Life is a flat circle with our AD.
…and we don’t win a lot.

I’m consistently surprised every time I roll through UC and it turns out not to be the post apocalyptic hellscape you repeatedly describe.

There are a lot of things area leaders could do better (and I hope they do), but if you think UC is that desolate and frightening, I’d love to take you to some truly oppressed areas.

When I was at UT, the Fort area near campus was far worse than UC. Total shithole, and I feared for my safety at night.

This.

I have lived in University City since I graduated 15 years ago. While it’s no Ballantyne (thank God), it’s not the place I read about on this board either. Yes, there are problems. Yes, bad decisions have been made by city leaders. However, there’s plenty of middle class housing and decent employment. I guess NN just has really lofty standards. ::slight_smile:

Today maybe, but when I was in school ('77-81) downtown (it wasn’t uptown yet) was dead after 5:00 pm, and much of it was more scary than UCity could ever be. CPCC evolved where it is; it wasn’t some prescient move to put it there and wait for uptown to bloom. I also think we would have had to cap enrollment years ago. I guess it is debatable what we would be today if we were the size of App, but we sure could not be 35,000 students uptown.

There was one twist in our growth that I wish had worked out. Queen’s College was floundering and the University looked at purchasing it and putting a satellite campus in the heart of Myers Park. That could have been a game changer.

Yup wouldn’t have grown at the rate we have and no parent in their right mind would have sent their kids to live downtown for awhile there. Who knows where we would be if we had stayed down there, but I don’t think we would offer all that we offer today.

Also we played in an NBA arena for 4-5 years anyway.

Almost on queue. From the now infamous op-ed comments section.

Average tenure of an AD is about 8 yrs while we have one for 30 yrs.

Nope. The previous, lengthy comment from “Zach” was mine. The latter was from someone else.

Well, then, f’ck the second guy.
