standard English

lay lie laid lain

Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

Oh, we aren’t doing obscure linguistic examples of grammatically correct sentences?

I can’t imagine this thread is going to fix anything. I guess if we start taking posts with horrible misuse of the English language and sticking them in here to humiliate the language abuser maybe a few people would clean up their act, but I suspect the worst offenders just don’t care.

This is my favorite thread in NNN history.

Also, ridiculous. Not rediculous.

I suggest we start doing this. But not with Ace because purposeful spelling mistakes in the name of bad comedy don’t count.

Also, blue talks darkly.

Paging Ace!
Their aint nothing wrong with my grammar. I use spellcheck.

THIS ^

I double majored in cracker-talk and moon walk.

. . . but some people on here don’t know that.
i frevently hope that if we ever actually become THE UNIVERSITY OF CHARLOTTE, the syntax on this board morphs into something that faintly resembles common English usage.
this has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with street-talk, hip-hop, cracker-talk, moon-walk, or any other lingo.
i’m not pushing for ‘high lit-er-a-ture’ on here; but if we’re supposed to be a COLLEGE fercryinoutloud, can’t we get the verb to agree with the subject?
Starting a grammar rant by failing to capitalize the “I”… I love it.

As long as we dont penalize: misplaced modifiers, segment fragments, improper punctuation, and failing to use an apostrophe for contractions, I am down.

If we’re doing any of that, then no way man. Im ****ed.

Blah, it’s a message board. Most of me mistakes are typos.
Blah, it’s a message board. Most of me mistakes are typos.
QFT- This is a sports message board…

This isn’t Russia. Is this Russia? This isn’t Russia, is it?

And for the record, the grammatical issues noted in this thread can be pinpointed to our sizeable Wal-Mart fan base, the students and alumni here speak only the finest Queen’s English.

i dont care about no spelling and grammar errors…what i cant stand is when people make their posts hard to read…they dont use capital letters punctuation or ever make a new paragraph…they just keep writing on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on in and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on one giant impossible to read paragraph…this is a message board…i should be able to read your post even a long one fairly quickly and easily…perhaps i should take this moment to talk about how awesome the niners are…they are so awesome…and by the way…shouldnt we fire lutz and judy rose…and we should understand how to use the enter key…i rather see one sentence paragraphs then have to reed stuff like this…i think its unpossible to raed this stuff when its written like this…and usually just ignore it…use the damn enter key…and we should fire lutz and hire pitino…the end…or is it…and on and on and on…ok it is really the end…thanks for not reading…AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ONAND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON

I wonder how Clus would feel about this thread…

The sole purpose of language is to communicate. I believe NLP commented on that earlier. If you’re getting your point across, what does it matter?

Understood, however…obviously quite a few people read and/or troll this board, and I’m sure at times they’ve thought “Good GOD, these guys are a bunch of morons” if they looked at some of the linguistic butchering that takes place here.

Oh…

Who, Whose, Who’s

That one kills me almost as much as There, They’re, Their.

The problem with grammar is that it it only taught in elementary school, and IMO that is too early for kids to really grasp what they are being taught.

My 11th grade English teacher was so fed up with the poor grammar from most of her students that she said F the curriculum and added grammar as much as she could within the class and to this day I credit her for me being competent in the grammar department.

Instead of making us read books that are borderline irrelevant in this day and time, teachers should be teaching proper grammar in high school, especially now with the advent of alternative forms of communication that relay on various forms of short hand.

so that the communication is clear and understood. that’s why the rules are in place. sure, sometimes (usually, even) you can discern the intended message from someone’s garbled grammar. but it makes it more difficult and tedious, and it is the root of many problems of miscommunication.

plus it makes you look stupid.

I don’t think using the wrong version of a word makes someone look stupid. Ignorant, maybe, but not stupid. I recognize that I am in the minority, but I think grandstanding over the misuse of the written English language is silly.
