State of Charlotte Flag

Yeah, this with just the C-pick instead of the state seal would be pretty cool.

Holy shit Dmast that is fantastic.

Yeah it is - where did you get it done D?

He quoted someone else.

I fail the interwebz.

CapitalBill, where’d you get that done? That’s awesome!

I want a hat and a flag. I signed up for the flag list. How did you get that hat made? That’s awesome!

Eventually, if the demand is there, I’ll do more than just flags. Haven’t thought of a hat yet, but that is a very nice look indeed.

Apparently I failed too…

Thanks! I made it myself- well the embroidery at least, not the hat. Being able to mess around with stuff like this is one of the perks of the job. If there was enough interest I could produce an order pretty inexpensively.

Lids/HatShack?

Lids Locker Room.

I would love to fly this at the student tailgating lot. I think it would get the rest of the students pumped and excited!

I’d love to see it at the student tailgating lot!

You can sign up to purchase one here.

I’ll probably place the order next week for anybody who’s getting antsy.

Most likely 2’x3’… much more reasonably priced than 3’x5’ plus that way you can still fly it under your American flag.

A comment from the Nugget.

"State of Charlotte was a great idea. The saltire flag is a mistake. Sadly, we’re not seeing much of #stateofcharlotte anymore. I don’t even think Napolean Sykes has used it since the flag order forms went out.

Like the article pointed out, the flag does not feature a C-pick logo, the university seal or the UNC Charlotte crown. There’s no hornet’s nest, no owl, no seal for the city of Charlotte. A ā€œBonnie Greenā€ flag based on the famous Bonnie Blue flag with, perhaps, a simple white pick axe on a solid green background could have been great. There’s a lot of different ways a flag could have generated excitement over the State of Charlotte. But a saltire? Come on, now.

I have coins at my parents’ home that are over 100 years old. They prominently feature a swastika on the front. Obviously, the coins predate the Nazis but, like it or not, that’s the immediate image you’ll get when you see the coins. The coins are cool, but I’m not getting a tattoo of a swastika on my arm any time soon.

Like it or not, the saltire will always be associated with the battle flag of Northern Virginia which was adopted by the Ku Klux Klan. You’re going to get a mix of emotions. Some will really like it and some will really hate it and a lot of folks won’t want any involvement with it one way or the other. I think this was kind of the goal. It’s keeping in line with the thinking of keeping niner nation as a small, exclusive fraternity that has to form a wall around itself from the rest of the fan base. Like #bus1 or #badfans or #sbg or whatever.

The whole idea of #stateofcharlotte was based on the principles of inclusion, not exclusion. I really hope you don’t kill it."

I think this is a fair discussion point. I agree on several points on how the flag may simply cause flack because some will see it as looking like the Confederate battle-flag. When writing the original article, I thought about mentioning some of this discussion in from thread, but was more interested in the roots of Charlotte regionalism. I was simply glad to see someone creating something ā€˜original.’ Looking at it now, I agree with it possibly killing the movement-today or in the future. Though I think that the design process was not specifically intended in that way. I think that simplicity was trying to be invoked in Lew’s defense.

Yet in the end, I am also tired of the inclusivity of many Charlotte fans. I don’t think it is always intended, but it comes out in the end…

U guys need to be nicer to that perosn who commented, you clearly hurt his feeling in the shoutbox at somepoint. :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as " inclusivity" … Thats whats fandom’s all about. You are either with us, or against us. It’s not unique to Charlotte.

Again - the design is used in flags all over the world today. Hell the state of Florida has that design in their state flag today. I really feel people are looking to see something that just isn’t there. I sent it to some friends (2 of which are black) and asked them what is the first thing they thought of and they all said Scotland. The swastika isn’t hardly used anywhere anymore but this design is. To compare those two is a little over the top IMO.

Second, we aren’t inclusive? WTF? This is where I just don’t get things. This is not the first time we have heard this. We are a smaller fanbase so people get to know one another. We see the same people at every event, over and over. No one has EVER said you can’t be here or you can’t talk to us. If anything we go out of our way to include people and invite more people. If you feel left out it is your own damn fault.

To me it sounds like some body who got their feelings hurt somewhere and got their panties in a wad and are taking a shot at something that is really cool.

Pretty sure that comment is from lake9er. He said some similar things in this thread about the lack of a seal and all that.

ā€œAs far as " inclusivityā€ … Thats whats fandom’s all about. You are either with us, or against us. It’s not unique to Charlotte."

The problem is not in regards to the broader population, but to Charlotte students, faculty, alums and friends. You don’t want to alienate students/alumni/faculty/friends and force them away. UNC Charlotte is a very diverse university, and from my experience it seems that the same group are always ā€˜the fans.’ Yes they are a close knit group, but there are more than 25,000 students and lots of alumni.
Many people see this close knit group as unapproachable. It is not always intended, but I know many students who are turned off by this. You don’t have to be ā€˜in the group’ to be a Charlotte fan. Many see the core groups as ā€˜an everything or nothing crowd,’ and we sadly live in the 21st Century, where people can flip on ESPN and become ā€˜fans’ for 2 hours of any team they choose.

You don’t want to alienate anyone who could be a good fan, and though the flag had no intention, some might take it as negative. And if you say you don’t want those people to be Charlotte fans, then you are being inclusive and turning them away…

And no, it is not a Charlotte problem, (its a problem everywhere) but that is not an excuse…
