State of College Basketball

I couldn’t agree more with Mark Cuban in this article. The slow down pace of the college game is becoming unwatchable. I think a 30 second shot clock would be a good starting point.

That will free up movement on offensive end if officials consistently call the contact. Eventually the defense will have to adjust (RIP HAVOC).

Until the refs are employed by the NCAA instead of independent contractors nothing will change.

I wonder if we can get them to start calling traveling again. This is not the NBA.

…and palming/carrying the ball.

Another get off my lawn thread…

If he’s so upset about the state of college basketball, why is he not lobbying the NBA to form a developmental league of those 19 year olds they currently ban from jumping
directly from high school? That league could have NBA rules. I’ll not be holding my breath until that happens.

I think the shot clock’s fine, the worst part of the game for me is the number of timeouts (TV and team). It’s crazy that five minutes real time can pass with only 10 seconds of actual play. That also kills the runs and saps the emotion out of the crowd.

The excessive reviews and length of them at the end of the game has also reached the point of ridiculousness.

I wouldn’t mind if the officials called it a little closer to loosen the game up, although too many fouls would slow the game down as well.

Um, the purpose of college is to prepare you for your vocation. So, ideally yes, it is to prepare them for the NBA.

I think they should match the NBA rules, because it makes sense. Just over 1% of the players in college basketball play in the NBA though so can we really say the purpose of college basketball or really any college sports is to prepare the kid for pro sports? Or is it to be a student athlete and represent their college?

Now at individual schools? Absolutely - if you play for Cal your goal is the NBA.

Well, a lot of our guys go pro and we’re a middle of the pack college.

They go pro, just not always the NBA.

Actually thats a good point. The majority of college basketball players that do go pro play international ball so perhaps tweaks to the gme should be to match those rules if college ball really is about preparing them for pro ball.

The college game probably could use some tweaking, but it definitely isn’t bad. Charlotte basketball is, but not the college game at large.

I mean the UK/UW game had the largest TV audience for a F4 game in 22 years.

The over-officiating is brutal. I don’t want to see a bunch of kids shoot free throws for 3 hours.

The guys that don’t go pro typically get degrees and get a job in something else.

Well it would be over offciating for a bit, but if they would stick with it the game would adjust. The main problem is unlike the NBA the officials aren’t employees. It was easier for the NBA to make adjustments and enforcement because the officials are directly tied to the NBA and there are fewer of them.

I think more fouls should be called and then teams would start playing the game correctly. Duke and K have perfected the hand checking, grabbing, flopping, jumping into defenders and dare refs to call them all , which of course they won’t. I think college game has gotten too rough.

College officiating is very inconsistent, which can be expected. However, they could easily implement the same handchecking rules that exist in the NBA and be done with it. My problem in college is all you need to do is drive to the basket and throw up a wild shot and you get a trip to the free throw line. Contact in the paint should be expected and it can’t be penalized every time it happens, it makes the game almost unwatchable.
