As we get ready for the game, the students here at Charlotte are giving it to the Minutemen commenting on the physical looks of the team and every movement they make. They have dubbed Luke Bonner the Geico Caveman for his beard. All night the Minutemen will need to block out the sound and comments of these guys who are riding the team hard.
7:35 p.m.
We are running late as line-ups are just being announced. For the crowd which is about 40 percent full its loud as the students are doing their 40-9ers chant.
7:40 p.m.
Finally underway after quite the spectacle line-ups here. Nice touch, RaShod Coleman came over the students and told them to cheer loud … Welcome to the Jungle blasting the speakers … let’s see if it holds once the music stops…
Yes it does the students are cheering OHHHHHHHHHHHH … Charlotte wins the tip.
7:51 p.m.
Anthony Gurley called for the charge. Charlotte ball. These students are loud, the rest of the crowd is silent. But from where I’m sitting its deafening.
8:01 p.m.
Tony Gaffney gets his first block of the game, Ricky Harrs nails a trey, UMass up 16-11, 8:45 left.
Chris Lowe’s teardrop is goaltended and the fans call out “Take his whistle” to the ref. UMass up 18-11.
8:04 p.m.
Charlotte’s dance team the “Gold Dusters” are performing to Damaged on the court right now at the under-8 media tiemout. UMass leads 18-14 with 7:49 left.
The student section got a rise out of Derek Kellogg calling out “Raisin Bran” and Kellogg responded with a smile earning some respect from the students. It has been a fun atmosphere with these students who are really into their team and chanting all game
8:06 p.m.
The Niner fans keep calling out cereals in honor of Kellogg. Rice Krispies, Corn Pops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
8:11 p.m.
Correia called for his second foul at 3:54 left. UMass up 27-17. The Minutemen are in the bonus with the seventh foul. Charlotte has been called for just four fouls.
Fans continue with Snap Crackle and Pop references … Tony the Tiger “They’re GRRRRRRRRReat” Pretty funny. Haven’t heard much of this, this season.
