Do you honestly think VT gives a ratās ass about basketball? Have you ever been to a football game in Blacksburg? Take a drive up there sometime in the fall and let me know what that school, alumni base and community thinks about basketball. Sure, itās nice when one of your other programs do well but if VT never won another basketball game, no one would complain because itās all about the pigskin up there. We donāt have another dominant program to fall back on. Basketball is it for us. Try another example other than VT if youāre hoping to make everyone feel better about our program over the last few years.
DOBA, you beat me to it.
comparing us to VT is not apples to apples.
i agree that our team this year was not as talented as in years past and i do think our level of talent will improve next year with our freshmen class at least in terms of size and athletism. do you think vcu has more talent than us. they are well coached. their coach gets the most out of them. their staff makes them better.
Quoted for truth!!

About the same as how the overall Alumni base and community thinks of 49ers basketball, perhaps.

Well, someone must care. Otherwise, Bobby Hussey or Ricky Stokes would still be coaching the Hokies.

Cāmon Run, letās not kid ourselves when weāre talking about which sport is king at VT. Iām not suggesting that the Hokies donāt invest a little bit of care into their roundball programs. But to use VT as a means of trying to console us about our current state of affairs isnāt even relevant. Just another reach by Lefty to try and make us all feel better.

VT doesnāt invest in their basketball program. Ever been to Cassell?
Football is king there, for sure. But, people support the basketball team. They will get even more support now that they are in the acc. Better recruits, too.

Iāll give you the community because the community in this area, couldnāt care less about Niner basketball unless weāre a top 25 program, easily accessed via TV/radio and taking part in the NCAA Tournament. But regardless of the criticism, our alumni base will always care about our basketball program more than VT does about theirs because itās our primary sport. They may be supporting their team now, because itās winning, but once the leaves start to change color, basketball will be a distant memory for Hokie fans. But for us, we just spend the next 8 months counting down to Midnight Madness.

And it also helps when youāre winning. Do you think there would be a huge buzz in Blacksburg over basketball right now if they had finished under .500? Their fans would already be out shopping for new tailgating gear for the Fall. They had a good season and played their way into the post season. Had we done the same, weād all be just as excited as their fans are right now.

All 2 or 3 thousand of us season ticket holders? VT supports all of their athletic program a thousand times better than we do.
You guys think people consider Charlotte a bball city ?? Why ?
It has only had us (Charlotte Bball) and has been a temporary home for NBA āexpansionā franchises. So why is it considered a bball city ? What else is there ?

This is a double edge sword. If people believe that VCU has better talent, then how did we let that happen? We canāt out recruit VCU? Otherwise, youāre going to believe they did a better job of coaching. Are we going to continue to let ourselves be out-coached by a CAA school coach? Either way you look at it, it shows that our program is going in the wrong direction. All positions in the athletic department need to be evaluated, from A.D., to head coaches, to assistants. Something needs to be done to right this ship before we get too far gone.
And yes, coaches should get the most out of their players and make them better. Great point.

Then move to Blacksburg so you can be amongst them if it upsets you that much. You love ripping the fans here for not supporting the team but Lefty, the fact of the matter is that the people on this board support the program more than anyone else. The fact that we are even on here every day, whether weāre bitching or praising, shows you that we all care. If you are bothered by the lack of support outside this board, then go do something about it. Go improve the marketing, go improve the TV packages, go improve the newspaper coverage, etc. The bottom line is that winning equates to interest. I didnāt see you on here griping about apathy back when we were beating up on Cincinnati in a jam packed Halton on ESPN2/ABC. If you want people to care more, then you have to put a better product on the court, period.
I threw out a fact. I don't care how you feel about it, to tell you the truth.
You wouldnāt know a fact if it broke your green glasses. You canāt think objectively enough to debate with facts. You debate with your highly biased emotions, while lacking the ability to be objective. But Iām glad you donāt care how I feel about it because finally, we share an opinion.

Jcl, I will agree that football is king at VT (I still want to say VPI. Shows how old I am!).

The fact is VT has been to one NCAA tournament in the last 10 years. The other fact is that our overall fanbase sucks in comparison, based on funding and support. Thereās certainly a strong core group of us, but overall, the Charlotte community and alumni base does not support this team win or lose. They might get excited and attendance increases but itās not the same as many schools throughout the region that we compete against.

Iām certainly not ripping the board members. Weāve got a great core group of a couple thousand. Damn, Iāve been trying to improve marketing, TV, newspaper, attendance ever since I graduated and started meeting the people who are in those positions and have authority in those areas. And I didnāt see people on here griping about shooting threes and style of play when we were beating Cinci and packing Halton.

So whatās your suggestion then on how to correct the problem as you see it? Personally, I just think Charlotte, in general, is a very fickle sports town. That includes the pro level as well. Just look at the Panthers. The Super Bowl year, you couldnāt find a ticket unless you had a deep pocket. Then when they had a really bad year, you couldnāt give tickets away. The Bobcats are experiencing it now as well. If the Bobcats become a playoff team, then that arena will be buzzing.
In my opinion, Charlotte has become too much of a melting pot for transplants. You have WAY too many people coming here who already have deep rooted allegiances with other teams. A guy whoās been a Buckeye fan his whole life isnāt going to start pulling for the Niners just because he got a bank job here. I just think that unless you truly give those people a reason to support us (top 25 annually, deep tournament run, a good TV package so people actually know we exist, etc.), they will not do so. As for our alumni, thatās a different story to a degree but I still think they are very fickle and want to support a winning product. All the folks here are going to be at the games cheering. I missed one game all year and Iāve been one of the most vocal about my displeasure with the program. If you want better fan support, then our school needs to be more proactive in getting people interested and we need to win more games. While I respect the whole āthereās more to basketball than wins/lossesā mentality, the majority of people only agree with that when their program is on top.

Why is it not relevent that VT has only been to ONE NCAA tourney in 10 years? I think it proves the fact that it is not as easy as everyone thinks to get to the big dance. Football is king but they have a lot of resources to support other programs.
My point to start this thread was that our talent level in not even comparable. Yes it is the Coaches responsibility to get the talent in here, I cannot argue that point.
I still donāt get it that most people think DA, Leemire and EJ are great players that were not coached properly. DA had his moments but he thinks he is much better than he really is. Leemire and EJ played out of position all year to give us the only chance at winning possible. We only had one player to make 3rd team A10. Where is this talent you speak of? Metro has a point on this and I agree with him. Sadly I donāt see much changing next year and the people calling for Lutz head may have a valid argument then.

The short version: time, football, image adjustment, marketing and a new coach if Lutz doesnāt get it turned around in the next two years.
