The Case Against ... CHARLOTTE!

I believe there was more to this event than most people know, both before the game and after.
Yep. They asked Lutz if they could stop the game once Wardle broke the record and present him the game ball. Lutz said No and that really pissed them off.

Not sure what happened after the game though.
That’s pretty classless.
I think it was exactly the right thing to do. Honor him on your own court.

As pointed out though, it was a moot point. The kid didn’t even score.
Ah, thought it was at their court (I assume you’d still need the other team’s permission to be given a break like that). Fair enough.

I guess the blogger doesn’t realize gold was found first in NC not CA.

Put it this way, Crean and Lutz didn’t exactly go out and grab a beer together after the game…

Agree with you there…was just being a little joking.

There was a stretch where Charlotte utterly dominated…but it was sandwiched between some parody time with them. Just remember that kid Diener shooting threes and that center wanting to step out. Would kill us up in WI with those 3’s.

I wouldn’t want to be DePaul. They suck.

I can see a kid from a Catholic school bashing the antichrist, but bashing Jesus! WTF! Call the Pope on his a55!

The Case Against is a series of why we hate. It’s always good to be hated, that means you won!

We were never NAIA, dumb a55. And we played McGuire in the Final 4. Who would go from Naia to Final 4 in a couple of years?

We were in the NAIA Dixie Conference when we first started out.

BTW, Al McGuire was the coach at Belmont Abbey from 1957 to 1964, so I’m thinking the UNCC-Marquette FF matchup wasn’t the first with him as an opposing coach against the Niners. Good question for Harvey Murphy!
We were in the NAIA Dixie Conference when we first started out.
As a 4-year school. Not sure if we were in a conference as a JUCO when we were the Charlotte Owls. That would be a good question for John Kilgo!

Hey guys, this is the author of The Case Against… article. It sounds like most of you enjoyed it and it was pretty fun to put together during the long, dry off-season. You guys were a burr in our saddle for years, particularly at Halton. I forgot all about the Diener incident b/c I pretty much blocked out all of the 03-04 season. Too much disappointment after the Final Four run. I do remember that Gregg Doyel wrote that Dameon Mason was the next coming of Dwyane Wade after that game. Ick.

Regarding the NAIA question, I did some crack research on the piece (Wikipedia) and it said (and it’s never wrong) that you guys played in the NAIA Dixie Conference until 1970. That makes the FF run in '77 all the more impressive. Also, the comparison to DePaul was on a rivalry basis, but they had some good C-USA teams as well. Never as good as their talent, but what do you expect with Pat Kennedy? Finally, if you are offended by “The Jesus” comment, you should click on the link, particularly if you are a Lebowski fan.

Congrats on adding the football team, that’s a massive commitment. Will they play at Ericsson Field (or whatever the heck it’s called now)?

Nope. We’re building our own stadium on campus and will play there from the start.

JSYK, it’s Bank of America Stadium, formerly Ericsson Stadium. Not an option as it costs too much to play there.

Congrats on building a campus stadium. Smart, smart move. It will increase student attendance and create a better college atmosphere.
40k on the capacity? What’s your conference affiliation? Sorry for the 40 questions, I’m a huge college football fan as well (Nebraska native)

Got to say, at the C-USA conference tournaments more than once the 49ers and Marquette ended up in the same team hotel (Cincy and Louisville had all the other ones booked) and there was nobody better to drink a beer with than Marquette fans. I guess everyone hated Huggins more than anyone hated each other.

Yep. Kinda looks like this: link (click to enlarge)

Nice job with the article/abuse, Warrior Brad! Hopefully we can abuse your team on the court again in the near future. ;D

Hah! So true, yet when he got canned at UC, we missed him. I don’t know why, but I was glad to have him back at WVU. My bro came up to MKE from Lincoln, NE to see MU play WVU in 2008-2009. He was excited to see Huggy and he didn’t disappoint. He got T’d up, had a couple of staredowns and then he whined in the paper that MU ran up the score.

I thought Dixie Conf. was Ncaa D2.

I didn’t read anyone else’s comments in this thread but your blog piece was hilarious and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Especially the bit about Butter.

From Wiki:

The Dixie Intercollegiate Athletic Conference was founded in 1963 as a member of the NAIA with the philosophy that participation would be strictly amateur, so no athletic financial aid or scholarships would be awarded by its affiliate institutions. The six charter members were Charlotte College, College of Charleston, Methodist College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and Lynchburg College.[sup][18][/sup]

BTW, the old Dixie is now the USA South Athletic Confererence and competes as NCAA non-scholarship D-III.

I wondered how there could be a USA South without a corresponding USA North division.
