Getting charging under 10 minutes and the price of vehicles under $35k is going to set off the electric car industry.
I agree - partly sadly, but i agree.
NWA seriously - I think that the classic ICE stuff you love is not going to miss a beat. If anything, I think itâs going to strengthen the clubs and the hobby overall.
I think there is some fairness to that. Look at MG cars for example. They are not sports cars in todayâs modern world, but they still have a loyal following. They offer a certain type of motoring experience, even if they canât compete in any real way with modern sports cars. ICE cars will just become more niche. There are still thousands and thousands of collectible ones though, and they arenât going anywhere.
It wont for me - but for the generations that follow it will. What we are witnessing is the death of the car hobby as we know it. My daughters husband in 20 years wonât know two shits about how to work on the MG I was planning on passing down through the family and more so than that wonât care to learn because cars for him since he started driving will just be a different experience.
Software, plug and play shit - thatâs where this is headed. For the record I also detest driving electric cars so part of the hate is just how I feel driving them. I really don;t like or enjoy driving them. I know all the positives with them, but donât have to like it. I can be the angry old man about this.
Have you driven a Tesla Model S? From what I understand, there isnât much not to like about them, even for traditional gearheads.
Why wouldnât you pass down the knowledge too?
I think there is going to be a place for gearheads for a long time yet. Whatâs going to die are the appliance ICE vehicles. All of the classics and bold styling and driver favorites are going to be loved all that much more. $.02
It depends if you like just performance then sure, but if you like the FEEL, the visceral experience of driving the electric cars just canât compare. Ive driven a Tesla and BMW and while they are amazing cars, fast cars - felt souless to me at least. Felt like i was driving an appliance not one with a vehicle.
Ill try I am just thinking and maybe wrongly that the next generation that grows up with electric cars wonât see the point or purpose of the ICE cars. There wonât be an entry point into the hobby for them at younger ages.
I always compare it to horses. Sure some people have horses and it is very niche it is expensive, difficult to get into and most dont see it worth the time or investment even if they think it is cool.
Well there are so many ice cars on the road, if people want them because they are ICE, there will be plenty of entry level cars around. You donât have to have a 64 Mustang to be a pony car enthusiast for example. Plenty of people my age got their start with things like 90s V6 Firebirds.
There are tons of Mustangs and Camaros around, hot hatch Civcs, VWs, etc. Those cars arent going to just disappear unless we have another cash for clunkers type program designed to deplete the inventory of ICE cars.
clt can report the mustang is going all electric in 28
It isnât EVs that are going to kill the passion for cars, and the car hobby. That has already happened with the badge engineering that took off in the 80s to the computerization that eliminates most DIY maintenance/tinkering today. As a past president of the Metrolina MG Club I was one of the younger members when I turned 60 while in office, and that is normal in British Car Clubs. I know plenty of guys that would like to leave their cars to their grandkids, but the grandkids do not know how to drive a manual transmission car, or what a carburetor is, much less how to synchronize dual carbs. Heck, half of their grandkids donât have a driverâs license until they are forced to move out of the basement and get a job.
About the only car enthusiasts you see today are the Cars & Coffee crowd that spend their money on ultra-low profile tires and wheels, LED lighting, stereos, and decals. At least they have some passion.
When our fragile electric grid fails @NinerWupAss and I are going to own the road.
Iâll be the guy in convertible Z28 blowing by yall
Iâll still have my motorcycles⌠you wonât be in front.
And Iâll be the guy in the giant steel triangle blowing by both of you.
Those cybertrucks hauling ass down the street like a sports car are gonna be a sight
CNN: Volkswagen CEO joins Twitter and immediately trolls Tesla and Elon Musk.
Electrek: VW plans new âTrinityâ flagship electric car that will ârevolutionize Volkswagenâ.
Donât think you appreciate a motorcycle acceleration
Man, the new Tesla Model S has sub 2 second 0-60 and sub 9 second quarter miles. That makes it faster than basically any motorcycle out there. These things are getting WICKED fast.
