The movie nerd thread - non blockbuster edition

Thought I’d start a thread for the netflix set. Movies you liked or hated that aren’t household names or just bombed at the box office. Stuff that would be great to queue up on Netflix.

I’ll start it kind of weakly. These aren’t my first picks, but I wanna get it going:

  • The Kite Runner - superb story of the Middle East mess from an ex-pat character

  • Sunshine - A movie I liked despite one hugely annoying plot device. Low budget but you can’t tell. Production is good and some (surprisingly?) solid performances by some B list actors behind that guy that played Scarecrow in Batman.

  • Syriana - A must see on middle eastern political mess

Damn, I probably have dozens. I’ll add more later.

You’re not really into the same kind of movies that I am. Funny that you like your music haunting and depressing, but it is too much for you in the cinematic form.

Eastern Promises - Viggo is awesome in this mob flick

City of God - one of the best movies ever made. It will be in your head for weeks. Far too powerful to forget.

Gattaca - underrated - did okay in theater. Jude Law, Ethan Hawke & Uma Thurman. A very real take on the immediate future & the human spirit.

The Insider - Crowe & Pacino take on Big Tobacco. True story.

match point - one of the better Woody Allen movies in recent years. Scarlett Johanssen.

Layer Cake - english mob flick that launched Daniel Criag’s career. A little like Snatch though not as funny.

Stardust - whimsical fairy tale is a little chick-flickish, but still good.

Disturbia - Hitchcock remake is funny, suspenseful.

The Fountain - Hugh Jackman in a mind spinner

Umm, I dont like my music haunting and depressing. I like good songwriting.

I’m listening to ****ing Japanese Motors this week. Think I may be getting into them a little bit.

Leaving Las Vegas - best love story ever told. Even better than Casablanca.

Punch Drunk Love - Adam Sandler Romantic Comedy set in the real world (sorta)

Love Me If You Dare - French Movie, great, great flick if you like your romance to includce malicious hate.

Little Manhattan - For fans of the Wonder Years.

Volver - Spanish flick about the bonds of womanhood and family…

Equilibrium - Awesomely fun action movie.

Big Fish
Life Aquatic

Oh man, I cannot stand wes anderson movies.

Big Fish wasn’t bad, but as far as “childhood” movies go I liked Secondhand Lions way more.

Second on Big Fish.

Pan’s Labyrinth is great, but a little blockbusterish.

The Orphanage was also fantastic.

Once - date movie, but she might not like the ending.

The Namesake - Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar) in something a little more serious.

Mongol - Ghengis Khan biography. A little slow in places, and jumps around at the end.

Thumbsucker - yeah, that is Vince Vaughn as the dad. Mom & Son are both great performances.

Cashback - dunno why, but i really liked this. The freeze thing is a little gimmicky.

All of those are must watch but especially the first two I bolded and out of those, especially City of God. That’s one of best films I’ve ever seen.

I saw We are Marshal recently. Great sports movie, I highly recommend it.

I watched King of Kong a few weeks ago on Netflix…best damn documentary I’ve ever watched.

Lars and the real Girl…quirky little movie about a dude who falls in love with a sex doll.

Margot at the Wedding…Good Night and Goodluck…Garden State…and Gone Baby Gone are all great movies I’ve seen in the past few weeks.

I recently saw The Darjeeling Limited and I thought it was great. Wes definitely has a different style of directing/filming/writing his movies but I actually enjoy them because they’re kinda cool in their own way.

Second on Big Fish.

Probably in the minority, but I like most movies with McGregor in them.

I didn’t really like Lars and the real Girl. It was okay. I liked Roman, but it was a freaky movie. not really the same kind of movie at all, but they reminded me of each other.

Didn’t like Garden State.

I watched it yesterday. I was in awe of my inability to pull away from it. Why it’s so compelling is beyond me. I guess because the mullet guy is just such a douchebag, and his little posse of suckups is so comical.

Royal Tennenbaums
Life Aquatic

another movie I find that is pretty good is Beatiful Girls…Rappaport is good in it.

I will never understand how anyone can like a wes anderson movie.

How can you not?
