The next coach pool

^ well, he is certainly a high energy guy.

I don’t think that’s the issue. The issue is, he’s being tauted as being the next head coach BECAUSE he has UNC-CH ties, not because he is a great coach.

And other than two 17 win seasons, what has he done to prove himself?

Let’s see, he was an assistant on a team that won the National Championship. He is the Jayhawks top recruiter, and consistently rated as a top 5 recruiter.
You could scribble out a note telling a kid you want him to come to Kansas to play basketball, attach to to a homing pigeon, and it would fly back with a signed LOI.

The last thing we need is Bill Self’s homing pigeon.
That made me laugh, but unfortunately that is far from the truth. While places like Kansas are always going to get top 100 recruits, getting the top guys is still a fierce competition which requires good recruiters. Kansas recruits nationally just like most other traditional big time programs.

The problem is, Kansas is going to have to battle with Kentucky, Texas, Oklahoma, Duke, UCLA, UNC-CH, Ohio St. (although they generally stick to the Ohio area), Florida, Memphis (don’t laugh, #1 class coming in next year)., etc. etc. for the top recruits. Even if they go regional, Texas & Oklahoma (Rick Barnes & Jeff Capel) are going to fight the limb to limb for the top guys.

On the outside, it may seem like an easy sell, and yea, for most the guys we go after, it is an easy sell. But, when the top guys have offers from schools with just as good facilities and just as much money pumping into their bball program, it’s not as easy as one might think.
