Cheer up Niner Fans. We played like dogcrap but things could be much worse for us.
We could be MEMPHIS FANS. Just think how AWFUL that would be.
GO NINERS!!!

I agree over 40…
We will be ok. Most of us figured we would lose 6 or so games before the season and we most likely will.
A tough pill for me to swallow since I live here.
NO WAY do we continue this series and come down here to play…
It is a lose/lose proposition.
Exactly. Instead of playing down to an inferior level and losing to an inferior team like EZU we could actually BE EZU.
See, there’s a bright spot in every rain storm.

The reality of that is rather alarming. Can you imagine having season tickets to Pirate basketball games and having to go sit through 40 minutes of ball, knowing you have no prayer of an at-large bid?? How can you even get excited each season, knowing your ultimate goal is to be good enough to possibly qualify for the NIT?
Yeah…I’d not satisfied with where our program is at right now but I’d hate to wake up as a ECU fan every day.
All of the ecu fans around me yesterday we yelling at their team, yelling at Herrion, it is not like ECU is a powerhouse, they played terrible, we just played worse…
I mean their own fans are excited they actually may get to play in the tourney, the CUSA tourney that is…
If we had stuck to the zone , we win yesterday even as bad as we played, when we went to the man to man, we got burned.
To make matters even more depressing for Pirate fans: Their basketball team is better than their football team. That must really suck if you are an EZU fan. Hummell, are you reading this?
Or things could be even worse than any of those.
We could all be tarhole fans while having no idea what county chapell hill is located in… gamer, are you reading this?
yeah whatever man, only kids I’ve ever known to go to college at charlotte are a bunch of dorks. Who even goes to Charlotte? It’s a freakin commuter school.
I’d definitely say App St and UNCW far exceed Charlotte as far as popularity of
students who want to attend college in NC.
I got news for you guys, ECU has a lot more hoops potential than Charlotte. BTW mods, nice deletion of other post.

In response though, yes, Charlotte has a reputation as a commuter school. However, things are getting better. Within the past several years, new residence halls have opened, and around 2010, the old highrises are scheduled to come down to make way for more new student housing. While there are a lot of students who live off-campus, more and more students are beginning to call Charlotte home. Currently 27% of students live on-campus. While this might not seem like a lot, it’s not too far off from ECU’s 30%. Also, just because students live off-campus doesn’t mean they can’t be a part of the school. I lived on-campus for a semester before moving to an apartment a couple of miles away. I still go to the basketball games, as well as other campus events. I don’t feel like I’m any less of a college student, or any less of a 49er, just because I don’t live in a dorm.
While you may know only “dorks” who came to Charlotte, that’s not a fair way to judge the student body. Many of the people I know who went to ECU were some of the stupidest people I’ve known, and that doesn’t mean that everyone at ECU is an idiot. I also know some really smart, well-rounded people who went there. The make-up of Charlotte’s student body is quite diverse. There are students who are white, black, Asian, Hispanic, Native American, and any other race you can think of. There are students whose families are beyond wealthy, and students whose families barely get by. There are students from every part of North Carolina, and plenty from other states as well. There are students here who were towards the top of their class in high school, and students who were towards the bottom. There’s no way you could fairly or accurately judge the school based upon only a handful of people.
Also, you’re slightly misguided about the “popularity” of schools in North Carolina. UNCW, Appalachian, and Charlotte’s number of freshman applications were all within about 1,000 applications of each other. UNCW was listed at 8,325 applications, Charlotte was 8,848, and Appalachian was 9,598. Appalachian accepted 6,293 (65.6% acceptance rate) and of those accepted, 2,473 enrolled (39.3% enrollment rate). UNCW accepted 4,522 (54.3%), and 1,772 enrolled (39.2%). Charlotte accepted 6,413 (72.5%). Of those accepted, 2,629 enrolled (40.1%). So while Appalachian may be a more popular place to apply, the number of people who went to Charlotte was higher than that of either Appalachian or UNCW. More importantly, the percentage of students who were accepted to Charlotte and actually enrolled was higher than that of either UNCW or Appalachian. While it was less than one percent higher than either school, it does show that neither school “far exceeds Charlotte in popularity.”
Finally, on to what this board and this thread are supposed to be about: basketball. Charlotte’s record over the past several years has been far better than ECU’s, and there’s no disputing that. Even head-to-head, Charlotte has had a better record, going 7-1 since joining Conference USA and 11-5 overall. Charlotte has been to the Final Four, and even though that was 28 years ago, the 49ers continue to have 20-win seasons and play in the NCAA tournament nearly every year, even today. The only real rough patch recently was a 13-16 season two years ago, but even Carolina had their 8-20 year. Even though I think most polls and lists are pointless, Charlotte was #88 in Street & Smith’s 100 Greatest Basketball Programs of All-Time. That list was compiled not using opinions, but using NCAA tournament appearances, wins, Final Fours, and championships, conference tournament championships, all-time winning percentage, NIT championships, NCAA graduation rates, and NCAA infractions, amongst other criteria. For a team that’s only been around 40 years, that’s not too shabby.
I won’t take away from you the fact that you’ve got some good players, especially in Badiane and Cook. There’s no denying that. But to say that ECU’s in a better position than Charlotte to become a household name in basketball is naive, at best. ECU has nowhere to go but up, so in a sense, they do have more potential to improve upon where they are now. With no Cincinnati, Louisville, Marquette, DePaul, South Florida, or Charlotte to play next year, you guys are in a much better position to get some conference wins. But Charlotte’s already proven they can get to the top of the conference, and that they can win the conference tournament. We’ve beaten Louisville at their place, handing them their worst home loss ever. We’ve beaten Cincinnati at the Shoemaker Center, and beaten them at Halton even during our 13-16 year. We’ve beaten Syracuse in the Carrier Dome, handing them their first season-opening home loss ever there. What we haven’t proven is that we can consistently win, and that we’re one of the top teams in the country. I have faith that we’ll get there someday, but I know it’ll take time. I know ECU has a football team, and that your football team is usually better than it has been recently. And I know you’ve got a good baseball team, too. And while that may be enough to create some pretty proud alumni and some pretty significant contributions, that doesn’t mean it puts you in a better position to become a truly great team.
I can respect that you guys are excited about your win, especially since it was possibly the last time you’ll play us and you’d lost seven in a row to us. I can also imagine that it felt pretty good to win this time after coming ohsoclose last year. However, you have to understand how much it hurt for us to lose to you. Even though you guys don’t have a good record, it has to hurt to lose to a team as bad as Western Carolina or South Florida. That’s the closest way I can think of to explain how bad this loss was for us, except it was even worse. Imagine if you had lost to Belmont Abbey or St. Andrew’s, and that’s about how bad this was. So don’t take it personally if people say your team isn’t good. They’re not. You have some good players, and you’ve had some really close games this year against some quality teams. Your arena is difficult to play in because you have good fans. You beat us this year, which you hadn’t managed in quite some time. Those are all positive things, and you should be happy with them. But you also have to understand why we’re not happy or even okay with this loss.
By the way, all of my information came from here, in case you want to question my numbers.
Another fact about the lower percentage of Charlotte students living in dorms. The fact that Charlotte is actually a city provides lots of housing near the school. This results in many students moving “off campus” before the end of their college career. This was even true back in the 70’s, when ECU was still considered a “teacher’s college”.
This is also true at other major universities located in densly populated areas. Charlotte has a higher percentage of students living on campus than the Univ of Maryland & many others.
One more difference in Charlotte & EZU. Stedents at Charlotte actually do receive an education. Ok Pirate fans, it’s time to take your penicillen.
Yeah...I'd not satisfied with where our program is at right now but I'd hate to wake up as a ECU fan every day.
first off, we don’t rely on basketball to interest us throughout the year – i’m not saying our basketball team is good, and we all know our football team sucks. but when one sport ends, another one starts for us. we have fan support who has seen success in football and baseball and know how sweet it is. you have tasted success in basketball and you know how sweet it is. our fans know that its important to support the program through the bad times and not just the good.
sure, we see an NIT bid as a successful season – but ECU basketball has never seen success like yours – but we have a great baseball program with great fan support, and even though our football program is down in the dumps right now, we will be better in the next few years – even with a crappy team, our attendance isn’t bad
i’m not one to like getting into pi$$ing matches with other schools … i’ve always respected you guys and have been jealous of your basketball success – but i love ECU and definitely can tell you that it does not suck to wake up as an ECU fan everyday
good luck the rest of the season – i’ll be rooting for you

what a dumbass. we feel like we have had a bad season if we dont win 20 games. you all are praying to get into the NIT each year
NIT???
The big thing they are tring to get into is the CUSA tourney
