This just in: The O continues to SUCK

This dying piece of crap continues to be that! The coverage of yesterday’s celebration should have been front page, or at least Sports front page. But NOOOOOOOOOO! It’s on 7C of Sports. Ever since this rag spoke out against us having a football team editorially, they go out of their way to cover-but-ignore us. SCREW 'EM!! We’re on our way regardless of their stance.

clt endorses this sentiment.

Actually, I was suprised it was in there at all. According to Persinger everyone knew it was a done deal when the Bill went to the Governor to be signed. No need to report when it was done in the paper. And a media event like yesterday’s? Why would the local paper cover it.

Well, they did cover it at least. There’s also info about the basketball schedule and it ran on the FRONT page of sports printed edition. ::slight_smile:

I’m no apologist for the Observer, but I have to point out that today’s edition has a page 1A story about the university’s community involvement.

I kinda agree with Lefty. I do think it should have been mentioned in the paper but I wasn’t expecting a big deal from the media. It is hard to get excited about something that is 3 years away.
Media worthy events would be announcing a head football coach, Breaking ground on new stadium etc.
A couple of people mentioned to me about Charlotte getting football and when I say that we aren’t starting until
2013 the air gets sucked out of the room. In today’s world that seems like forever.

Oh lord, that crap was actually printed? He did next to nothing to verify that information, didn’t even check to see if the other schools had released their schedules, SO LAZY.

so he basically did what you did?

What’s the Obsever?

Substantially less actually.

I was being sarcastic , really. I thought it was a big deal and the University certainly did based on the way it was handled. Student union, decorations, champagne, beer, wine, victory bell, speeches. Persinger gave me that line last week about everyone knowing it was a done deal already so no reason to report it. Unbelievable. I agree about the 3 yrs away thing but last night was one of the major milestones along the way.

I look forward to the FSL sales team celebration Johnny Harris promised us. ;D

But in 1st page Sports news the Tar Holes beat up on a team in the Bahamas, made up of BANKERS! :o

…and yet they’re relatively quiet on the deepening football scandal at UNC-CH and the fact that their track coach (a doper stripped of his Olympic metal) apparently committed suicide. Can you imagine the indepth, investigative reporting if that happened on the Charlotte campus??

At least we have two articles on the front page of the online version. It’s more than there usually is so I am satisfied for the moment. I’m working on a project with one of my student orgs and when it is time for the media to get to it then it should be on the five o clock news and front page of the O.

Was the lead story for WCNC 36 11:00 broadcast last night.

Sometimes I wonder if the Observer and the Charlotte athletic department had a recent falling out.

But if they did … how would we be able to tell? I mean, any sort of backlash by the Observer would be impossible to distinguish from the usual.
Gentlemen,

I’m disappointed in the lack of coverage of the football celebration on campus at UNC Charlotte yesterday. Considering the enormity of the decision for the only local public institution, consisting of nearly 25,000 students, to move forward with fielding a football program, I would have assumed it would warrant a decent story.

I realize the Observer had a story online when the Governor signed the bill which made Charlotte Football a reality, but yesterday’s celebration was about recognizing those who worked so hard on this initiative and more so about showing the community how important their support is going to be in the future. The Observer’s television counterparts were in attendance and featured stories on the celebration both online and in the lead sections of their evening news broadcasts and the Observer has a blurb on the celebration.

I can only hope that this is an oversight and due to a much more in-depth piece on Charlotte Football being prepped for the coming weeks, but based on the past years of pitiful coverage I will not be holding my breath.

Sincerely,

Stephen Collie
Above is my email to Mike Persinger and Gary Schwab regarding the lack of coverage.

I saw David Scott and an Observer photographer there at the event last night. I can’t belieive they would do that for only 2 sentences in the paper.

Maybe David & the photographer just wanted free booze without working.

That’s what I did, but at least I found out we almost had a 2-for-1 with Auburn.
