MARDY COLLINS NAMED NABC FIRST TEAM ALL-BIG 5

Getting ready to head out the door for the weekend (son’s soccer tourney in Greensboro; youngest daughter’s play in town) and the latest from the A-10 is that GW will sign a player out of Chester, PA who picked the Colonials over Georgetown (he had a press conference scheduled for 3:00PM today) and that SJU coach Phil Martelli will be named coach of the USA U-21 Basketball Team for this summer.

GO NINERS! GO A-10!

There was quite a rumor over the weekend that GW’s Pops Mensah-Bonsu had signed with an agent, thus forfeiting any opportunity to return for his senior season. The rumor had some credibility, coming from Chad Ford at ESPN Insider. Turns out, though, that Ford’s info was incorrect.

Assuming that Mensah-Bonsu and Mike Hall withdraw from the NBA Draft, plus the arrival of LSU transfer 6-9 F Regis Koundjia, the Colonials again should be the team to beat in 2005-06.

BTW, GW did sign 6-4 G Noel Wilmore of Chester (PA) High School [2004-05 Pennsylvania PIAA AAAA boys state champions], who chose the Colonials over Georgetown. Wilmore stands to get plenty of PT with the recent transfer of Ricky Lucas.
