-loved the hustle, even when we were up 30, days of playing down to a team may be gone
-lee goldwire is a good ball handler
-mitch is going to have an awesome year if nobody can handle his speed
-plavich has gotten better
-i like nance’s style of play, he is rough, hustles more than anyone, and still has a soft touch
things i didnt like, if you are in the lower student section, or you camp out for your friends, WEAR GREEN!!! goodness its not hard, i dont care if it doesnt say charlotte, just wear green. please?
I thought Plav played a great game. For once, I saw a guy that looked to pass or drive before taking an ill-advised shot. If he continues to play like that, it’s only going to make us a much better team.
Mitch is a stud, plain and simple. Not sure anyone is going to beat him to the basket on a fast break. Don’t be mislead by his 1 assist stat. Tough to get assists when Plav was covered on the break everytime and Mitch has an easy layup. The assist numbers will come.
Drayton had some big shoes to fill and I think he did a great job. Gave some quality minutes, got his feet wet as a Niner in a real game and it will make him better as the season goes along.
Iti wasn’t in the game as much as I anticipated him being but still managed to grab 10 points and 4 blocks. I just wish he wouldn’t bring the ball down so low when he’s under the basket. Just go up with it so it’s not so easily stripped by the defenders. But he stayed out of foul trouble and that’s a good thing.
Nance will provide some QUALITY minutes off the bench. He’s Calvin Clemmons with good hands and arguably a better shot. He’ll be an asset for us in physical, foul-plagued games this year.
Basden? Just another double-double. What more can you say about this guy. Gets it done and does it silently.
Other guys played well also. Overall, a good and expected performance against an inferior team. We’ll have a better test against Rutgers who will certainly play more physical. One thing that worried me about tonight is we allowed LBS to match us on the boards. We need to do better because we were fortunate enough to allow it tonight against a team that just couldn’t make a basket.

I thought Mitch was great. I know this was against a below average team but if he can play anywhere near this good we can be a great team.
Mitch shot 90% and scored 25. They couldn't stop him and there was no reason to pass it. Coach pointed out that they didn't drop off Plavich to help on Baldwin...so he took it in. Eventually, they'll have to stop Mitch. When that happens, PLAVICH will be WIDE OPEN.
Goldwire did show us he can handle the ball. He didn’t look like a freshman.
Iti had a nice game but his usual foul-ups. Not fouls, though but lots of fumbles.
Very good crowd, especially the noise from the students BUT please wear GREEN.
Goldwire came to play in the 2nd half. Very impressed. His first made shot as a Niner seemed to switch him on.
Eddie & mitch are so much better at outside shooting than 2 years ago.
Plav is so much quicker defensively.
We still need to work on team defense a little more. Some of those lineup combos didnt execute well on that end. Acted like they hadn’t played together. However, I did notice that EJ uses his length exceptionally well to guard outside the paint. He also performs seemless switches to pick up a ball handler coming off a screen. Plav is much faster defensively and really stays with his guy except when he gets a hard or moving screen.
I was impressed with our half court trap, at least against this opponent. It produced multiple TOs.
Baldwin - WOW. If he keeps shooting jumpers like that he will be HUGE. Still needs to improve running our offense in a half-court set…but Withers will make that happen easier. 1 assist is deceptive because he finishes his drives and has no need to dish.
Goldwire - Very capable backup. Looked timid in Pfeiffer game and his first few minutes tonight…but you could see his confidence grow just in this game. Iti’s point blank missed dunk cost him an assist. But 3 assists to 1 TO is solid for a Freshman debut.
Point Guard play - Is our only questionmark…well what about this line for our PG’s tonight- 34pts (12-17) 9 rebs 4 assists 2 TOs 5 steals!!!
Eddie - Turnovers were un-Eddie like…everything else was VERY Eddie like. 2 3ptrs!
Drayton - A little out of control at times but a very solid 1st game in Div.1. Will definitely be a factor in some games this year.
Iti - Not bad. 5 dunks (1 missed and 2-3 stripped) 4 blocks and NO FOUL OUT. I’ll take that every night and be more than happy.
Plav - Better shot selection. Better on D. A lot of deflections and steals. Even passed a coupled of shots he could and maybe should have taken. 5 ASSISTS!
Nance - GREAT role player. Plays physical but under control. Very good around the basket (used Iti’s jump hook more than Iti did). Will be solid all year off the bench.
Withers - Very quiet night for Curt. Un-Curt like but I didn’t even notice him at all.
Freethrows - Better…still needs some work.
Team Defense was average - LongBeach missed a lot of open looks
Rebounding margin was disappointing.
Half Court offense was UGLY - Withers’ return will help that though.
Crowd was GREAT
It was against an inferior opponent but it’s gonna be a gooooooood year me thinks!!
EJ is a better perimeter defender than I thought . But he has no business playing the 4 right now. He’s a wing foward. Flat out.
Mitch is sick. SICK. Good look sagging down low on him, he’s going to hit the outside. Good luck doing anything to slow him down.
Goldwire is going to be a hell of a player in 2 years. I’m glad he’s backing up our stud PG.
Iti. You have long arms. Stand still and thrust them up towards God.
Plav played well. He had some nice passes, and used the pump fake to his advantage, gaining penetration. Last year, he would have remained stationary and attempted to shoot again.
Nance isn’t a terrific talent, but he KNOWS how to play, where to be, and isn’t afraid to mix it up. He’s a less animalistic, but more refined Kelvin Price.

Mitch hits a three. Eddie hits a three. Plav fakes 3 & drives basket. Later Plav then makes great pass inside. Mitch and Plav may have answered many of our questions in one game.
Mitch is well on his way to making all the doubters look stupid. Enough said there.
Nance looks serviceable and can shoot free throws!
Iti is aweful. All his points came on dunks over 6’5" defenders. Sorry, not impressed. He has no hands, poor footwork and, again, almost started an incident after a whistle. What is it with this kid, does he think he is a tough guy?
Goldwire looked more confident in garbage time when he was not going to get pulled. I disagree with those who declared him a good ball handler. He has the Demon syndrome where he looks good when he is between the circles dancing around with the ball before he pulls up for a three pointer, however he does not handle pressure well and still dribbles with his head down in transition.
Plavich looked better because his shot selection was much improved, except for that first three pointer that gave me flashbacks to last season. He seems to have accepted his role and understands that we don’t need him to hit 10 three pointers/game. He just needs to help keep the defense honest by knocking down a couple threes/game when open.
Although Withers is clearly the best player on this team, we are only going as far as Baldwin takes us. Our half court offense and ability to score in transition come to a screaching halt when he is not in the game.
Nice crowd for a bad opponent. And, no offense to Home in Halton, I liked the new guy. He was good during intros and was much easier to understand during the game.
