Lutz, Charlotte looking for a big finish at UC

Bobby Lutz is going to miss coming to Cincinnati.
The Charlotte coach will be at Fifth Third Arena on Wednesday night when his 49ers visit the University of Cincinnati for the last time before the two schools part ways and head to different conferences next season - Charlotte to the Atlantic 10, UC to the Big East.
Lutz is 1-5 at Fifth Third, so his visits more often than not have ended in disappointment. He didnât get his first victory there until last season.
But he still counts the Bearcatsâ home as one of his favorite places to coach in Conference USA.
âLouisville and Cincinnati are my favorite two places to go,â Lutz said Monday.
"Even though itâs very difficult, I love the competition. I love the packed house, although I donât like losing. At The Shoe, weâve lost every time but one, but thatâs what college basketball is all about. Iâm just thankful I get to coach at a venue like that.
âIâve actually made a few friends there that sit behind our bench. We talk and I kind of enjoy that.â
Charlotte will arrive here packing a nine-game winning streak and a starting five that many believe is the most talented in the league. The 49ers (12-2) are 6-0 away from home and, at 3-0, are the only unbeaten team in the league.
And yet somehow they remain unranked, which UC coach Bob Huggins believes is an oversight on the part of the voters.
âI think theyâre the most talented team in the league,â Huggins said. âIâve said that from day one.â
Why havenât they been ranked?
âI think itâs probably because us and Louisville and Memphis, when people look at the league, those are the teams that are the most recognizable,â Huggins said. âI donât think, on a national scale, people have caught up to them yet.â
Mondayâs UC practice was no more intense than usual in light of the Bearcatsâ Saturday loss to Louisville, Huggins said, but he did spend time after the session working individually on free-throw shooting with Jason Maxiell and Eric Hicks, who were a combined 11-for-22 from the line against the Cardinals.
Lutz understands that Charlotte fans are upset about the 49ersâ lack of national recognition, though he says it doesnât concern him. Charlotte, whose two losses to Rutgers and Alabama were by a combined three points, is fifth among unranked schools receiving votes.
âThe only polls that matter to me are the ones at the end of year that the (NCAA Tournament) selection committee uses when they decide whoâs deserving,â Lutz said.
Lutz knows that he faces a tough chore playing UC after the 20th-ranked Bearcatsâ loss to Louisville. That chore became a little more challenging when junior point guard Mitchell Baldwin dislocated his shoulder against Saint Louis scrambling for the ball in the closing seconds of the first half.
The Charlotte coach said he hopes this wonât be his last visit to Fifth Third, but itâs unlikely that UC will continue to play the 49ers on a home-and-home basis in a non-conference series, so Lutz is advised to savor the experience Wednesday. Certainly he knows what to expect.
âItâs going to be a loud and intimidating place,â he said.
