Forward K.J. Sherrillās transfer was announced this week, and guard Jamar Briscoe left the program March 22. Both would have been seniors, and both were recruited by former coach Bobby Lutz. āItās part of college basketball,ā Major said Wednesday. āIām trying not to make mountains out of molehills with it. This kind of turnover is part of the game.ā Read more here: http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/04/04/3151494/charlotte-49ers-alan-major-transfers.html#storylink=cpy
This only happens at Charlotte.
āItās happening other places, too,ā ESPN college basketball analyst Jay Bilas told The Observer last week when asked about Wake Forestās situation. āAny time you take over a program and have some significant upgrading to do, guys leave. It happens a lot of places.ā
Sherrillās 2.8 points and 1.4 rebounds will be greatly missed. Guy wasnāt going to play anyway next season, glad to see him gone. Means more minutes for our young guys to develop.
I wonāt say Iām glad to see him gone. He put some effort into 49ers Basketball at that should be appreciated. If this is whatās best for him I wish him good luck and God speed.
Sherrill and Briscoe leaving on similar terms. Both rising Seniors and would not have been guaranteed much playing time. Makes sense in both of their situations.
iād have done exactly the same thing had i been in their shoes. nobodyās āfaultā. crappy situation for everybodyāincluding the coaching staff.
now maybe we can move on.
At least they compared our number of transfers to those of another really successful program the last 2 years. (Wake)
I wish KJ and Deuce the same amount of success that Bobby has had at State.
At least we didnāt pull a St. Joes like they did to the Oābrien kid last year, not releasing him from his commitment while pushing him out.
I guess weāll have plenty of growing up to do quickly next year, will be fun if we get to see the young kids improve.
How do we find out if this was KJās decision or that of the coaches?
Obvious answer, Alan Major canāt manage a line.
Hair line?
According to KJās uncle(colleague) he was blindsided⦠KJ first heard of possibility when Goodman published his article. Coaches started to contact with him (about 8 ) d1 schools and much more d2 before coach major talked to him⦠Finally last week coach brought him in to talk and said with recruits coming last year that he wont get any playing time and that he wont have a scholarship after this semester⦠So with that said⦠sounds like major forced him out⦠Hopefully major knows something we dont because i thought KJ could work well with our new recruitsā¦
If thatās true, I donāt like it. Donāt care if āitās the norm at higher profile programsā, blah, blah, blah. Just not a good way to operate. Even if KJās playing time was reduced from what it was this season, he deserved to retain his scholarship and be given the oppurtunity to finish his FINAL season here.
I dont see how he could have been blindsided, being that heād been tweeting about leaving weeks prior.
If what 49erDie says is true, I wonder why the coaching staff did this. Perhaps they have 2 last minute recruits lined up to take the place of the 2 departing players.
I donāt buy relatives too much. Kind of like Briscoeās mom saying this wasnāt his decision. Yes it was. You would not accept your role on the team and decided to leave.
He was forced out, but only after threatening to leave. I normally feel bad for the player in these situations but this isnāt one of those cases.
As fans we get upset that our team is losing. We also get upset when the coach is clearing house to make changes. I think that if the coach feels that this is in the best interest of the team the I support the decision. It kind of sucks for the player as they are being forced to move on, but in the end KJ will probably go somewhere that he can contribute and enjoy his last year. Iām a competitor and I wouldnāt want to ride the pine my last year. This applies as well for Deuce.
I think Deuce leaving was more related to finding a system that fit his style of play and the opportunity to be on a team that was focused on winning not rebuilding. He would have been a returning starter for Charlotte playing 20+ minutes so iām not sure playing time was his issue at all.
I think KJ just was going to be the odd small forward out in Majorās plans no fault of his own and would have played less than 10 min a game.
Win for Briscoe, Win for KJ, yet to be seen if the team will Win.
With those 3 guys leaving UNC-Chapel Hill for the NBA they have some scholarship openings.
That being said, this is nothing new, coaches āpushing outā other coaches recruits happens all of the time. In fact, we have had coaches in the past push out guys they did recruit.
If āpushing outā is being honest and telling an upperclassman that his minutes are not guaranteed, I donāt have an issue with it. We canāt sit here and complain that we are losing and then complain that guys who were not helping us be successful transfer.
