Trevor Ferguson - 2005 (2006?)

Shooting guard from Oldsmar Christian (FL) who decided Pitt wasn’t the place for him. Will probably prep in 05-06. Spent the summer in Pittsburgh, but didn’t enroll for fall semester. Apparently suffered a freak accident in which he broke both wrists as a HS junior after a dunk! Florida All-State first team as a senior.

(BTW, one of the articles said he had put on weight this summer.)

do we have any interest in him at all?

Dax, not sure. Just noticed that he had left Pitt this week and returned to Florida, so that re-opens the recruiting process on him.

OLDSMAR CHRISTIAN’S TREVOR FERGUSON COMMITS TO BIG EAST’S PITTSBURGH PANTHERS

Trevor Ferguson, a 6’6" combo guard, announced today that he would attend the University of Pittsburgh in the fall of 2005.

During the 2004-05 season Ferguson put on a show for Pinellas County by averaging 24.5 points (2nd in the county), 9.4 rebounds and 7.8 assists (2nd in the county). The energetic guard also connected on 63 threes, good for 2nd in Pinellas. He was a Galaxy of Stars 1st Team All State Selection in 1A and runner up to Calusa Prep’s Denis Clemente for Player of the Year.

He received an extra year of eligibility based on a medical redshirt which occurred during the 2003-04 season.

Ferguson chose Pittsburgh over such notables as Georgetown, West Virginia, Nebraska, Florida State, George Washington, UAB, USF, Richmond, Penn State, Baylor and Eastern Kentucky

We have described him as a poor man’s Pete Maravich, a highly entertaining scorer capable of putting up huge numbers in a variety of ways. He is an outstandling ball handler, a deft passer and fine shooter. He is equally adept at taking it off the bounce and dunking in your face or pulling up for three well beyond the arc.

Sounds more and more like the kind of player Lutz would recruit after reading this (see next to last paragraph of quote) from a UAB board…

After suffering a disappoint injury last season, unsigned senior Trevor Ferguson is tearing it up this year to the tune of 26 points, 10 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game this year for Oldsmar Christian (Fla.) High School (17-2). The efforts of the 6-foot-5, 185-pound combo guard have not gone unnoticed by college recruiters. Mid-majors and high-majors are in the mix, and a Conference USA team is in the lead.

“New Mexico and Pittsburgh came in recently to watch Trevor,” said Oldsmar Christian head coach Ryan Pannone. “George Washington, Eastern Kentucky, South Florida, North Carolina State and UAB are all supposed to come in the next couple weeks.”

Ferguson, who broke both his wrists last season on a dunk attempt, has a dangerous combination of size, skill and smarts at the combo guard position.

“Trevor is starting to play really well,” said Pannone. “There are not many 6-foot-5 combo guards who can do what he does. He has grown at least four inches since being in high school and has played the point guard position all his life. He also shoots the ball from very deep and his a very high basketball IQ. At some point, he will be a successful college coach.”

With offers presently on the table from New Orleans and James Madison, offers from UAB and North Carolina State could be coming soon.

“Trevor really likes UAB, and [Assistant] Coach Scott Edgar really likes him,” said Pannone. "He also likes James Madison because of the school. His dad really likes James Madison as a school also. But UAB is probably his favorite.

“He is an up temp guard and loves to play in an open court style. UAB would be perfect for him. He would fit in at NC State also. [Assistant] Coach Mark Phelps said he could shoot as many threes as he wanted. I just think that UAB and NC State want to watch him one more time before they offer.”

Ferguson is already a division one qualifier.

Video 2 at 1:26 and 2:26, very “Plavichesque”. However, the multiple shots inside the 3 point line that went in were not.

Not to mention the drives to the basket that he finished off with one-handed dunks!
"He's either going to go to an in-state school or a prep school," Pannone said. "If he were to go to an out-of-state college, it would have been Pitt."

What a f**.

Yinzer, I wouldn’t put too much into that. I kept reading that Mike Cook left ECU because he was “homesick” and wanted to return to Philly to play. So he ended up at Pitt! And that UMass’s Jeff “Big Deli” Salovski left the team because his heart wasn’t in the game anymore and that his playing days were over. So 2 weeks later it’s announced that he’s transferred to Sacred Heart (Connecticut) and will suit up for the Pioneers after sitting out 2005-06!

From what I’ve read, Ferguson committed to Pitt without taking a visit. After spending the summer there, he decided it wasn’t where he wanted to be. Yes, he could end up at Florida, FSU, Miami-FL, South Florida, etc., but I suspect that he’ll get a lot of attention if he preps this season, so who knows.

Is that Matt Walsh…

He’s going to NC State…
