ROANOKE, VA - She came close last year in North Carolina but Hannah Kiefer finally received her crown Saturday, being named Miss Virginia 2007.

Kiefer, a Hollins University student, was second runner-up in the 2006 Miss North Carolina pageant. She was crowned Miss Virginia Saturday after a week of events in which she also received two preliminary awards.

Kiefer, a High Point, N.C., native, is a double major in communications and psychology at Hollins University. She will tour Virginia for the next year making paid appearances and promoting her platform: creating healthy choices for teens.

A director of Abstinence Education of Virginia on the Hollins campus, Kiefer said she hopes to establish a nationwide organization to teach teens character that leads to abstinence. She also is a member of the Hollins Batten Leadership Institute.

Kiefer, who competed as Miss Mountain Empire, will represent Virginia in the Miss America pageant.

Miss Greater Richmond Jessie Buckman was the pageant’s first runner up, followed by Caressa Cameron, Miss Chesterfield. Leigh-Taylor Smith, Miss Arlington, was third runner-up, and Miss Williamsburg Nathalie Fassie was fourth runner-up.
HIGH POINT – Twenty-two yearold Jessica Jacobs of High Point took top honors Saturday night during the 70th Annual Miss North Carolina Pageant held in Raleigh.

Her Miss North Carolina winning platform was Read To Me, a childhood literacy program.

In an interview with the High Point Enterprise just prior to this year’s pageant, Jacobs said that just seeing the children’s faces light up is worth it all.

“We can spread information and ideas, and encourage children to read,” she said.

According to Jacobs, all contests are required to choose a platform to run on, with the literacy program being something “near and dear” to her heart. “The platform distinguishes the Miss North Carolina organization (from other pageants),” she said.

Jacobs, who represented the Miss Central Carolina Pageant this year, competed against young women from all over the state, including locals Elizabeth Carty, 20, of High Point; Morgan Kivett, 21, of Trinity; Kimberly Thompson, 22, of Archdale and Gretchen Wallace, 24, of Thomasville.
