UAB football

Another thing I just realized. Currently UAB has six men’s sports, which is the minimum required for NCAA D1 membership. If they cut football, they won’t just be able to cut a couple women’s sports to stay Title IX compliant, they must add another men’s sport in order to keep their D1 membership.

Is Alabama the lehman brothers of higher education? I would actually somewhat welcome that.

I was thinking this. Sorry if it seems like vulturing, but it’s a little like not splitting up siblings in adoption. We could take several of these guys and let them still play together. Yes, of course it helps us, but it also helps them too. And think about the well wishes and community support they’ll get.

Anyone who read that link I posted knows this is a Mortal Kombat-esque finishing blow by UAT. This isn’t about athletics. This is about shutting down the entire damn school except for the Medical School, which is already branded the “University of Alabama School of Medicine”. And to think we got pissed when CHeat tried to put a med school in our back yard.

Congress could get involved here to the extent of federal funding of any of these programs, but it’s gonna be a tough road. I dont like their chances in the state court system simply because of all the “bamar” idiots everywhere. Remember these are the same inbred hick contingency that produced the Toomer’s Corner tree poisoner. They’re absolutely insane.

I’ll have a real dilemma the next time the Crimson Tide plays the tarholes.

This is absolutely insane.

Birmingham is the biggest city in the state and they aren’t going to have a state school with undergrad programs? No wonder Alabama is still bringing up the rear.

I am sooooo glad I don’t live there.

There is a reason that Alabama has not had the economic and cultural growth that North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Texas, and even South Caolina have had in the past three decades. Their state government is incestuous and corrupt. They are much more interested in settling petty scores than in properly educating the citizens of the state. They genuinely should be ashamed.

clt says roll away damn tide.

There is supposed to be an announcement about UAB at 3:00 pm today according to http://csnbbs.com/thread-716270.html

RT @ALcomBirmingham: BREAKING:

Sources say #UAB president Ray Watts will announce today he’s ending the school’s football program http://t.co/c1l9fLQxPp

Interesting. According to this article, the governor of the state of Alabama apparently did not know anything about this and was not in the loop as of yesterday.

I wonder if ESPN will report the whole story behind this.

Probably not. Hell, that article mentions the lack of on campus stadium but doesn’t mention the fact that the trustees shut down the plan to build an on campus stadium.

There have to be a lot of UAB boosters and Birmingham civic supporters that are VERY upset. It sounds like the program was doing OK, and had a plan to improve but wasn’t allowed to execute their plan.

PS: Wanted to add that this move hurts all those Alabama HS players who were hoping to make it to college - that is very sad.

Why would they? They’re part of the problem in that they curate a collection of schools for fans of college sports to root for that often is not the one they attended.

Well, perhaps we should try to scoop some of their players up that have experience playing in C-USA and in FBS. It might be too soon, but we need to jump at the opportunity.

Sorry to UAB fans if it hurts, but our staff needs to call these guys ASAP:

6’2 270 JUCO DE that is about to win his 2nd NC. Yes pls.

Call their other recruits too.

Then call their current players as well. These seem promising:

LT Victor Salako (R-So.) — Like Byrd, Salako is a veteran on the offensive line. The Huntsville native has started 23 games at left tackle and been a staple at the position. He was lightly recruited out of high school but that shouldn’t be the case this time around. What makes sense: There is no real immediate connection to a school for Salako, but he would be an upgrade over a junior college lineman with two years of eligibility remaining.

(6’2 295) DT Jontavious Morris (Jr.) — The plug in the middle for the Blazers, Morris has started 14 games the past two seasons at tackle. What makes sense: He went to the same high school as Roscoe Byrd (the lineman) in Georgia, and the duo followed each other to UAB. This has the makings of a package deal.

LB Jake Ganus (Jr.) — Former high school quarterback that started 32 games as a weak side linebacker. Ganus has been the team’s leading tackler the past two seasons and had six sacks this year. What makes sense: It’s hard to project. He was offered by the service academies coming out of school and his primary recruiter — Tyson Helton — is now at Cincinnati.

Per Twitter, it said UAB will honor all scholarships if players choose to stay. I can’t imagine many will. They have been betrayed by the administration, why would they stay?

clt blames the observer.
