UNC Charlotte has landed on U.S. News & World Reportā€™s list of Best Graduate Schools for 2024, snagging 19 top-100 rankings.

Those annual rankings aim to help prospective graduate students identify schools that best fit their needs. It evaluates programs from business and education to social sciences and nursing.

ā€œItā€™s clear the word is getting out about the world-class teaching, mentoring and research opportunities available here at Charlotte,ā€ Chancellor Sharon Gaber says.

Charlotteā€™s Kids Festival is today on campus. Going with my daughter after church. Nice day to be outside.

Not familiar with this but sounds like a great way to get the school in front of parents and young people.

UNC Charlotte is poised to gain R1 status in 2025 ā€” a classification that recognizes the ever-increasing amount of research it conducts and its roster of top-level talent. It also stands to catapult the university ā€” and region ā€” forward.

Just two major metropolitans in the United States ā€” Charlotte and Portland, Oregon ā€” donā€™t have an R1 university. The official 2025 classifications are expected to be released early next year, but projections show UNC Charlotte would qualify under new metrics, according to the American Council on Education.

ā€œI believe higher education is one of those anchor institutions in a community,ā€ says Sharon Gaber, UNC Charlotte chancellor. ā€œI think it broadens the opportunities for us.ā€

Donā€™t tell the unc bog about this. They will certainly try to make sure it doesnā€™t happen.

Iā€™m sure the BOG is looking for ways to delay as it may pull away attention from Chapel Hill.

This was none of Gabers priorities. I think it also highlights why they changed the chancellor hiring process to go thru the BOG vs the individual school.

Still baffled, but not surprised, by Chapel Hill Philā€™s comment when he was first hired - ā€œItā€™s more about the system than it is the school.ā€

I wonder why he got hired?

At the same time, the Appalachian chancellor was advocating for his school, not the system. As a result, a much inferior school with limited resources in Boone, NC gained significant ground against us. In some ways, they passed us.

So, itā€™s not all about the system! I hope Gaber can lead Charlotte and not get relegated by the system.

I think she can and will!

App isnā€™t anywhere near passing usā€¦ they offer 2 doctorate degrees and we offer 24. The forced decentralization of power in the UNC system will hopefully help us going forward.

BTW, their unpopular Chancellor resigned yesterday.

Phil was Provost here before heading to Wyomingā€¦he knew the school and the systemā€¦he was an obvious choice. But, I do believe he came back with the ā€œsmallā€ mentality, not really a forward thinking fellow about the institution.

In the academic world, in no way has App passed Charlotteā€¦the closest to this university is ECU, and thatā€™s due solely to the medical school.

No, they are nowhere near Charlotte academically.

clt says appy is a regional school and cannot reach R4 status

Perception is reality. Many see it otherwise regarding Apps status perhaps related to their success with football. The BOG did not see Boone anywhere near a threat like they do Charlotte.

Charlotteā€™s future success is only limited by what we are allowed to be. Everything else is in place with great leadership, great city, financial health, beautiful campus, and the AAC conference.

We just need to take advantage of the resources we have and prevent the BOG from restricting us. Sad to see small private colleges take advantage of the opportunities we are being forced to pass on.

Did you mean this was ā€œoneā€ of Gabers priorities?

And when did the BOG take over Chancellor selection?

Was that after or before Gaber?

Anyone know what the official reasoning was and what the real reason was?

New EiC and Sports Editor (seems like the latter is his passion).

Yea I mean one. Sorry stupid phone typo.

All future unc system schoolā€™s chancellor changes will be going thru BoG. Change was made after our leadership change. Will be interesting to watch the app process.

I seem to recall the official reason being given was to maintain a uniform vision of the future of the UNC system, but I took that as bow to chapel hill.

Without a doubt. We are lucky we got Gaber before they could interfere. Itā€™s all about keeping the rest of the system under their thumb and not surpassing the mothership.

It just seems so short sighted and stupid.

That thought process is bad for North Carolina.

There is no way that the other schools in the system are going to catch up to UNC in prestige.

They have a 98 YEAR head start over the next research university.

I detest their zero sum game attitude related to the growth of the system.
