UNC Charlotte Works to Maximize its Recreational Field

Suprised this hasn’t been posted yet. Interesting…

http://www.charlotte.com/274/story/728672.html

They actually sent out an email sometime in the last month of spring semester to a bunch of the intramural sports captains asking them how they felt about either replanting the grass or investing in turf (obviously the more expensive option) - they asked for some solid reasons for either so that they could present them to the higher-ups.

The way this university adds stuff - I’m never going to want to graduate…

[freak double post]

Here are the plans for the new fields.

I would also propose that we make our football field the synthetic turf, just so more than just football could use it. They could also use it as one of their practice fields without worrying about tearing up the game field. This could help us justify raising student fees for football. It would get used more than just 6 times a year.

It looks like it’s right across the street from Campus Edge.

Yeah that’s not even on campus.

Yeah technically the school owns that land, but it’s not “on campus.”

[LEFT]Definitely wouldn’t play there at night… easy mugging target.

I see it differently. I think that optimizing that space over by c-edge and the other “campus apartments” that aren’t actually part of campus housing makes the university feel more whole.

This is a totally separate issue entirely but I’ve felt for a long time that the reason this campus feels “commuter” with no community isn’t because there is no one around on the weekends - but because no one sees everyone around on the weekends. The campus invested in suite and apartment style living (not to mention there is plenty of it offered just off campus) which denies the whole “dorm life” feel that you get from a high-rise. Like it or not, that creates community amongst students. Half the time you don’t even know your neighbors anymore (I know I had no clue who lived above me in martin village last year). I’m hoping that these new fields being placed around 3 or 4 major apartment areas is beneficial in helping feel and develop the community because students will have a place to easily walk to and play/be seen by others.

I would also like to think that the increase in police around campus (I’ve seen a major increase in the last year alone) will concentrate on this area in order to keep it safe.

maybe i’m just confused but to me it looks like those fields will be on campus. those fields are in between john kirk and mallard creek church which means they will be located just north-east of the greek village.

technically they are on campus… but, to the general eye and to those who do now know better - it appears as if it is off campus. They surrounded mostly by either roadways or other off campus apt. buildings

with the greek village being right there though it shouldn’t be that bad.

I personally think its great.

sounds like they’re building stuff over towards that future site of the football stadium
