University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane Pregame

Tulsa is 2-0 after upsetting Southern Miss. Time to show up and play.

Tulsa is to Charlotte as Charlotte is to Southern Illinois. Not sure I want to watch this one, especially after Saturday’s debacle.

Tulsa is actually pretty talented. They played a very tough OOC schedule, so that is why their record is what it is. They have the talent to beat anyone in CUSA.

Great… someone please tell the team that… they seem to play to their opponents record…

Interesting note: Charlotte’s 3 pt shooters are now hitting a very high percentage on the season, even after a slow start. 38% overall, Lester ~30% (by far most attempts, this will go up I think if he gets more selective), Henry ~30% after a horrific start to the season, Williams 40%(!), Ingram 49%, and finally Cherry at 50%. Shooting is no longer our issue, and the improvements of Williams and hopefully Henry and Lester will make this team pretty good offensively. The glaring issue now is defense and turnovers.

Wonder if there’s a way to get more open shots for Cherry and Ingram. Ingram went 5-8 versus UTSA, it looks like his shot attempts are going up. I’d think it would be a good idea to keep trying to set up Ingram and Cherry as much as possible when they’re on the floor, as both are really hitting when they are open (they mostly take smart shots too but have a little trouble getting clear enough looks, so we need some good solid screens for them to get separation from the defenders or more drawing in perimeter defenders for quick kick outs). I don’t mind at all if they shoot more 3’s as long as the offense tries to work for an easy basket first and also makes the defense work some to get them a better look. It would be a little funny if after the team shot so poorly last year turns into a 3-point shooting team this year.

Another interesting note: Henry needs only 3 steals to move up from 6th to 4th all time in steals at Charlotte (according to our Wiki page). He’s on pace to smash Basden’s steals record by the end of his senior season.

Tulsa is 1 spot ahead of us in Sagarin 135
7-9 record

They play schedule we should

He is only 2 Turnovers from breaking Butter Johnson career TO record.

Further proof that Butter was unfairly maligned.

Man what i would give to see a legit 6-8 small fwd who can slash, shoot fair, post up, and reb.

I don’t know if he ever would’ve become that versatile while here if he’d have stayed, but he was still adding the strength he needed and improving his jumpshot and he had improved a ton since his freshman year. His play in the Providence game last year was a glimmer of the potential he had against ok competition (7-11 for 14 pts, 7 rebounds). But definitely not consistent enough to know whether he would continue to improve. I’m still bummed he transferred, because even if he was inconsistent, he could’ve helped us this year and next.

I don’t think Evic had a fraction of Butter Johnson god given talent. Plus the southpaw thing. Some nights he abused lottery picks.

Butter unfortunately was born without a brain.

Every game worries me now after Saturday. What a disappointment, to put it kindly.

And he did need some further development in his overall game. Like I said, I don’t know if he would’ve gotten there, but he had the potential for what you were asking for, a tall sf with a decent shot and the ability to drive and rebound. Unless you want to add the requirement of a draft pick level talent (i.e. Johnson with better ball handling and decision making), but those are tough to come by these days.

It’s a moot point I suppose.

We got this in the bag.

He was a joy to watch because he had gotten so much better.

Ahhh Butter, the good ole days…

I’m not sure what to expect tonight, but I will be there.

At least I will get to see this guy.

Have we ever beat Tulsa?
