Originally posted by DownwithNBA@Nov 30 2004, 05:04 PM The paper is generally a bunch of reelance writers so it's generally hit or miss wether or not you will be reading coherent articles or pure manure. Jordan Gross used to do all the b-ball stories for the paper till 2003 and was pretty good, had a couple of pages of pre-season coverage every year and big spreads for the games. Now I've got no idea who handles it. I hope you meant Jason Jordan? :D
Man he played football at utah and wrote for the uncc paper, this guy must be pretty good!
JJ wrote for the paper last year and he did good, but heās working with ESPN now and so goes the coverage. JJ go back! I think there was a Gross there that did a good job too, but canāt remember his name.
That paper is laughable, and the girl obvisouly doesnāt understand what to cover. Iāve seen things in there about other sports that were somewhat in depth. The writing there is just bad, but at least put something in there about the biggest sport on campus.
I hate to say it but it looks like women get another strike against understanding sports (save Jenna).
The 2 times I criticized publications for not covering what I thought they should and how they should, they too, offered me the opportunity to write for them. I accepted the offer both times and learned first hand what a commitment one needs to make in time and creativity to turn out material thatās really worth a $hit and what Iād be proud to have my name attached. I believe if a student has the time, interest and talent they should go for it. I believe The Times and any publication that relies on unpaid help would be thankful for the assistance, NINER coverage not withstanding. I believe the problem is not The Times as such, but a lack of interested, dedicated contributors who can actually write.

Michael Gross. And 49er1, you nailed it, itās hard to get people to write a gerat article for $5. You end up making about 50 cents an hour. If even that.
Maybe Jena could do a little double duty

Granted I havenāt read the paper since 2002 when I graduated, but I was never impressed the whole time I was at UNCC. And I read a lot of newspapers.
My girlfriend graduated from Kent St. U, one of the top journalism programs in the nation. She was a photographer for their daily student paper. It was consistently ranked in the top 3 papers in America by the Society of Professional Journalists. Thatās the ranking that matters. My girlfriend told me sheās never seen UNCC ranked in their list.
Well Sideshow the Columbia Scholastic Press Association is no slouch either and I donāt see your girlfriendās prestigious Kent listed anywhere either.

Notice the Award winning magazine as well.
Student Media at UNC Charlotte is a well established and distinguished group of publications from the newspaper to the marketing department to the literary arts mag. I know this because I worked there for four years while in shool and walked by the room filled with awards and plaques each and everyday.
The program may not be as well know nationally due to itās size (they only publish the newspaper twice a week and the mag once a year while bigger schools publish daily and have mags that publish each semester or quarter) and the lack of a journalism school that would offer a wealth of talented and motivated writers (motivation is key, because itās a lot of work for little or no pay, the benefit is the clippings and experience you have to show once you graduate).
As someone mentioned earlier the coverage can only be as good as the writers that are available (and knowledgeable) Without a good program, they come few and far between and the best writers I knew and still know tend to want to write news or opinion, not sports. Also the mention of women covering sports is total bull because one of the more consistent sports editors a few years ago was a woman, who became editor (3 of the 4 editors where women while I was there) and now works for a daily newspaper.
Iām not going to comment on the coverage or lack thereof because to be honest Iāve only seen one issue this year. Itās not Stephās fault or the newspaper, itās more an issue of students that are willing to get out there and do something rather than complain and itās not easy, especially being a section editor. When I was a senior I worked 30+ hours a week and those where just my posted office hours, not counting late nights/early mornings and skipped classes to meet deadline. The newspaper staff consistantly works late, late hours to meet deadline and I donāt envey the editor for having to not only put together the paper each week but to also have to handle complaints and other issues.
If you question any of what I just said, go to Cone room 165 any Sunday/Tuesday at 11pm or Monday/Wednesday afternoon to see what goes on while preparing for deadline and try to stop by the conference room - you wonāt miss it because the walls are covered with awards.
Student Media is a joke!!! PERIOD!
And that editor is an even bigger joke. I wasnāt even being antagonistic when I said I didnāt see coverage, and she says why donāt you cover them then!
What a joke!
If theyāre so good post ONE good, well written article from them this year right now!
There I put whoever defends them on the spot.
Put one well written article on this site.
Iām waitingā¦
Well Sideshow the Columbia Scholastic Press Association is no slouch either and I don't see your girlfriend's prestigious Kent listed anywhere either
Easy there, Kochese. Itās entirely possible that the Kent newspaper didnāt enter that contest. I checked their website and didnāt see any mention of it. I think Kent focuses more on the Society of Professional Journalists (who rates professional newspapers as well as student rags).
But the CSPA deal sounds like a pretty prestigious award for the U Times. And apparently theyāve won it several times in the past. I wouldnāt have guessed it from the content that I was used to reading back when I attended.
Thanks for the info
Does UT accept freelance articles?
Still waiting for a well written articleā¦
Tell you what Iāll reduce it to a decent articleā¦
And the wait continuesā¦
I've said it before and I'll say it again....scrutinize all you like but the UT continues to win awards over schools with far better schools of Journalism. (Daily Tarheel for instance)
Iām not so sure about that.
Based on my experience with the Daily Tar Heel (yes I am a student at UNC) and the University Times at UNCC, there is no comparisonāthe Daily Tar Heel is head and shoulders above.
Go ahead and bash me all you want, but itās a very, very good paper (sports, current events, campus news), and from what Iāve seen from the UTimes barely covers menās basketball (as you guys have stated).

Well Barker if you arenāt so sure about it ā¦read my follow up post which shows the 2004 award winners. Daily Tarheel nowhere in sight and UT won a Silver Crown award. Maybe you should read before you post.

What would you consider the traits of a well written article?
It was only a few months ago that a lot of people were upset about the paper printing news. When one or two of the team was arrested, the paper printed it and was demonized (no pun intended) by many. The paper was even barred from the gym, or censored before it could be distributed here, if I remember correctly. Seems that some outside marketing group or advertiser has a right to say what the paper prints, to some extent.
I dont think the UT would ārepayā the ones involved, but it would seem a good idea to concertrate our coverage on content that is not dictated by an outside group.
To put it another way, What goes around comes around.
This is from the Society of Professional Journalists. Colorado, UNC and Kent State tops in:
Sports Writing
First Place - āFour of a kind,ā Jason Graziadei, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, Colo. Published in The Rocky Mountain Collegian.
Second Place - āChecking In With the Nationās Most Talented Trio of Signees,ā Jamie Agin, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, Chapel Hill, N. C. Published in The Daily Tar Heel.
Third Place - āThe One,ā Rob Meyer, Kent State University, Kent, Ohio. Published in Daily Kent Stater.
NinerMike, weāre sports fans and I think you know what Iām talking about.
Post a decently written sports article on this site right now. None of the articles are good for sports thus far, is the point Iām trying to make and they donāt cover basketball.
I think you guys are getting away from the issue, THIS YEAR the paper is BAD! The coverage of basketball is BAD. The head editor that TOOLBAG girl Lazzaro is TERRIBLE AND UNPROFESSIONAL and doesnāt understand the importance of Niner hoops at our school, PERIOD.
She tells me āwhy donāt you write itā well Iām not the journalist, you are! And the reason I donāt write it is because I suck at it, and since weāre in the same boat maybe she should stick to posting on message boards like me is all Iām saying.
Those awards must be for layout and things of that nature⦠The paper SUCKS!
By the way⦠The wait is officially over for that ādecently writtenā article this year.
I rest my case.
The UT times will publish almost anything, freelance, whatever. They have a hard enough time filling their pages with student written articles. I think the main problem is the editors often think of lame story ideas. When I wrote for them I would just show up when I actually had a compelling idea/article instead of something like āwhy is the food so bad on campus?ā for the umpteenth time.
