I wrote the editor of the paper to let her know that I didn’t see any coverage of the team when I visited campus and she said: “As always, there are positions available for writers if you are interested in covering sports. Thanks again!”

This paper is a REAL joke! Reminds me of the old Observer coverage, but to the 10th power. What a tool this girl!
That really stinks. I was on the staff of the paper during the 70’s. I recall doing a preseason basketball issue - that was before we ever went to the NIT and NCAA’s
Ron Green Jr. covered the 49ers for us then and did a great job.
Covering the 49ers was considered a priority. The editor of the paper would have done it if necessary.
damn… thats so sad its not even funny. the UT was nothing to me the 5.5 years i was there except something to use as a pillow during my art appreciation class.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…scrutinize all you like but the UT continues to win awards over schools with far better schools of Journalism. (Daily Tarheel for instance)
There are people in life who complain about everything and then there are people who do something about it. Which one are you? The editor’s letter was an invitation for you to do something about what you perceive as lack of coverage. Sounds to me like you have an opportunity to tackle.

Egg-zachary.
When I was at the UTimes, I was often the only sports reporter there (or one of two). Combine that with trying to graduate in 4 years, party and just partake in the college experience and you don’t have all the time in the world to cover stories. Plus, the paper only comes out twice a week, which can sometimes limit the amount of space available.
That said, for us not to have any coverage is pretty weak. When I was there, I made sure to cover every game we could, even if it was just a rehash of a AD release.

I thought we had some folks posting here who worked for the paper, or at least did last year.
Powerbait?
Powerbait or one of the other front-row guys should write a story or be interviewed about how it is down in the trenches. It could open some eyes as to how important student fan support is to some of our students. It’s about school pride and maybe if students read about it, it will help.
Some of our posters still in school need to look into writing some articles about the team and student support for the team(Gamer if you decide to do it, please let PI proof read it before you hand it in). I never wrote for the paper, but I really wish I had. I sounds like the are having participation problems now and you can get anything published. let’s see one of our own here take some inititive. Switchfoot, TF, NLP, PB, Chisox, what do you have more important to do??? Hell write the articles while your camping out.

Yes, I will certainly get my work proofread, but gee, aren’t you too much of a perfectionist?
I am indeed a writer for the paper, but I chose not to cover niner games for one reason. I don’t want to sit in the press box. I hate not being able to cheer during a game.
Steph is a really nice girl and she is working really hard, but they couldn’t find a capable sports editor this year. Those jobs are really time consuming for little pay. Also, the paper was worse two years ago and is slowly getting better. There was a big fall out and a lot of people left.
I did write two articles for the b-ball preview (Top 10 CUSA moments/Team Preview) and will probably cover some of the away games for them, just so someone will.
They are understaffed and need to do something to increase the writer base. I encourage everyone who is interested in writing to at least give it a try, I had a lot of fun when I was more involved down there and the scenery was nice when I worked down there.

That counts me out for home games. I do plan on doing quite a few road trips including the cable car classic, but that particular one is during break. Perhaps if there is a road trip or two Pb doesn’t go to, I might be game.
How bout: GAME SATURDAY with a short preview. Also, include student ticket information. Postgame: short summary, photos, high scorers, record, and upcoming games. That would be sufficient until someone is found.

What awards did it win? Granted I haven’t read the paper since 2002 when I graduated, but I was never impressed the whole time I was at UNCC. And I read a lot of newspapers.
My girlfriend graduated from Kent St. U, one of the top journalism programs in the nation. She was a photographer for their daily student paper. It was consistently ranked in the top 3 papers in America by the Society of Professional Journalists. That’s the ranking that matters. My girlfriend told me she’s never seen UNCC ranked in their list.

I think Charlotte won something a couple of years ago for in depth reporting.
Charlotte does have a fine newspaper, as does Chapel Hill.
I think the Observer does a good job generally, but they should pay more attention to what's going on with the Niners.
The paper is generally a bunch of reelance writers so it’s generally hit or miss wether or not you will be reading coherent articles or pure manure. Jordan Gross used to do all the b-ball stories for the paper till 2003 and was pretty good, had a couple of pages of pre-season coverage every year and big spreads for the games. Now I’ve got no idea who handles it.
