USC Upstate

There goes my excitement for the season.

Upstate out rebounded us 47 to 35 I feel this was the biggest difference in the game. We gave them too many second chances to score. We are going to have to find ways to rebound better.

As a 49er fan since 1970, I have anguished many times about lost games against inferior teams. However, until this year I don’t ever remember a Niner squad with so much firepower that simply cannot defend. Whatever scholarships we have left should be devoted to defensively oriented players.

Are you sure she wasn’t telling those Upstate people how she landed football at Charlotte after fighting for it for 20 years?

Upstate shot 53% for the game. The way we played defense, their percentage should have been even higher.

Usc Upstart is a good team.Price said so. Georgetown barely squeeked by them by 45 points, they beat a good d2 school, and even have a win against another d1 team.

We only had 8 TOs, scored 103 points, and still lost. I’m shell shocked I think. I remember thinking about halfway through the 2nd half that my postgame post would include something about how we couldn’t put them away. Well we couldn’t, and it cost us.

I’m very concerned about how we’re going to D up physical post players. 11-14 in 20 little over minutes from their big man. The only time we doubled him was when they needed a three to send it to OT. Dang.

On the bright side, a win over Davidson will get the bad taste out of our mouth quickly, if we can pull it off. I’m hopeful but not optimistic we can do that.

Maybe Price should give Lutz a call about junk defenses :o

Losing games like this is why we cannot have nice things. This includes losing to Rice in football and men’s soccer losing in their first game. Unacceptable

Did any of you go to the game? Their big guy played like Shaq in his prime and they hit all their 3s down the stretch. It is a very disappointing loss but sometimes you encounter mismatches and the ball doesn’t bounce your way. We still have the opportunity to beat some big names on our schedule and have a good conference run.

It was destiny that we lost. Got it.

I attended the game and we have several opportunities in the first half and early in the second half to put the game away, but never could get the stop when needed. We would get up by 7-8, but then they would hit 2-3 straight and the game would be tight again. We played like we expected to win without putting in the effort like we did against ECU. This is the reason we are not ready for the NCAA tourney yet. We shot 58% from three, 49% for the game, and only had 8 turnovers and still lost. We were out rebounded by 11 which is hard to overcome when you are as small as we are this year.

We have good guard play, but we must get some recruits that can play and over 6’7". We have Van Hook playing instead who may be 6’5" and he cannot match up. Washington has a hard time matching up with big guys as well since he is thin. We have the building blocks to start a new program with all of our guards, but we need a more rounded team.

I’m not drawing any conclusions from this game until I see us play some more. I really like our ball handling. We have complained so much in the past about dumb turnovers and I think Price has done a good job solving that. I’m not going to harp about the obvious flaws in our roster. Let’s just keep supporting our team and see how the season goes.

It was just a lousy, no good, very bad week in Niner Nation.

Have a happy Thanksgiving weekend, everyone. Spend some time with your families. Talk your dog for a nice long walk in the crisp fall outdoors. Go do your early Christmas shopping. Get your decorations up. Don’t think about our shitty ass athletic department. It won’t do you any good.

Where was I? I just assumed the team could handle USCU without me.

-Is 19 points in OT a record? We scored 14 but still lost by 5.
-When Braxton is hot (5-5 from 3 to start the game), you have to leave him in. We should have been up 20 at halftime.
-Needed more guys playing the second half. Jackson and Garvin could have given us a boost defensively.
-Thought I was seeing a Lutz/Major team in the closing minutes. Guys stopped moving and passing and went one on one. Not typical of the team under Price.

We literally have nobody that can guard a legit five. I don’t think it’s lack of effort. I do believe that problem creates more problems defensively. I still think we will be ok in CUSA. This is the type of team that could get hot for a week in march.

Trust the process. This team is one or two defensive minded big men away from being very good. That’s not going to happen this year though, unfortunately. Ajukwa might be able to carry the conference load though.

Let’s drop 130 on those arseholes up 77.
