USC Upstate
This is so so embarrassing on so many levels. I knew our D was not good after the Newberry and Elon games but come on.
Also the crowd was abysmal, I know a lot of people are gone for Thanksgiving, but for a once proud program that once boasted about having a ā€œgreat home court advantageā€ this is sickening.
Fun also to watch our AD go over and talk to the USC Upstate people then point at us(student section) and encourage them to rib us the whole game.
All around crappy game, hopefully we can clean it up on Saturday.
Judy was just bragging on how good she did with the new student seating ya’ll.

The wife of the USC-Upstate head coach used to coach our title IX basketball program here at ole UNCC.

USC Upstate

Reid should of had a chance to try to defend their big guy. He isn’t as tall as Benas but he is less susceptible to being pushed around. And at least he could provide some hard fouls and making him shoot from the line rather than easy layups.

Q Jackson Season FT: 3/11 27% I sure hope he can improve that. Will be a long frustrating 4 years if not.

Season 3pt% Stats…

Davis 67%
Price 62%
White 46%
BO 42%

#family.

Eddie is a Charlotte native and played (I think) at East Mecklenburg High.

So factual.

Students already on break? I counted the members of the ā€œstudent sectionā€ on one hand.

I was there and my friends and I all expected a bad student crowd due to the Thanksgiving Holiday. I think we were the only ones who actually stood and cheered the whole game.

Were you guys on the side closest to the USC Upstate bench? I saw you guys. #proud

Yes we were, I had the Harambe cutout in the second half
Yes we are very proud, frustrated, but proud.

This is what is going to happen (and what I expected pre season) when we play against a team with a physically dominant big guy. Our guards and even our forwards are going to be able to score against anyone, however, unless an adjustment is made, JC Washington can’t guard someone who is 7’2" 300, nor should he be expected to be. This is why I was so pleased after the ECU game… we competed defensively against a squad of by far superior size and a psyically dominant big man. Adding Ajukwa will help. I expect us to compete with Davidson and wouldn’t be surprised if we won. Intrigued to see how Price can help defense. All we need to become is a just below average Defensive team, and you are looking at a team with the potential to be very special.

Utterly unacceptable. We need to immediately market glorious Athletic Program as Home of the Chokers.

Get ready: d’son is going to kick our ass but good. Systematically and methodically. >:D >:D >:D

No amount of truth makes it okay to say that. Ever.

First game I’ve been to in a long time since I stopped buying season tickets. I paid for the gold section and the seats were pretty good. I asked for 121 or 122 but they asked if I would be willing to sit in 123 in the corner. I’m not sure why, because there were more empty seats in the other sections which make us look bad on TV.

We need solid big men bad! Buchanan ate us alive. Double double with 24 points and I think 14 rebounds. I was watching Washington and Garvin get tossed around by him each trip. They give up 5" on him. Benas at least matched his size but he’s not strong enough (actually 40lbs lighter). Another thing I noticed is Washington needs better conditioning. Halfway through the 2nd half and he could hardly get down court. He kept bending over to catch his breath. There were a few times he made no effort to get a rebound because he was so gassed.

I’m glad we have great shooters finally. I just wish we had a true center and a knew how to defend. Our defense is atrocious.

Ajukwa looks to be Price height but 10-20lbs lighter. Not sure how he will help down low. I think I remember him being listed at 6’6" but doesn’t look like he can bang down low… Maybe he can.

I only got to see some of the first half, but is there any reason we didn’t double Buchanan? Folks in the shoutbox mentioned we weren’t doubling him at all until the end. Once it was clear our post guys couldn’t handle him, I’d think it would make sense to start doubling down on him and make them beat us with the outside shot rather than easy shots down low. It sounded like we did that late and they hit a 3, but it seems like after he was clearly on his way to a career high it’s time to take your chances with their outside shooters.

I’m a little surprised that Price isn’t getting raked over the coals for this game. Lutz and Major both got criticized heavily on here for our guys not being ready to play bad opponents. Are our fans giving him more leeway for good reason, or maybe people just don’t care as much anymore?

I hope Price can turn things around. I’m still concerned about the defense and his trouble recruiting post players. Hopefully he can fix those issues in the next year or two.

One of the things that excited me about Price was his experience as a player. He was a great shooter and great at moving the ball around. This is something I complained about with our team for years! Now we’re playing team basketball and we have guys that are lights out from almost anywhere outside the paint. I have to think he’s really helped with this. We just can’t defend and don’t have the size we need. I think he’ll start fixing that and then we’ll see how it goes. I hate losing to teams we have no business losing to, but I’m optimistic he can fix things.

We never really doubled him, Jobey brought this up in the post game. The one time we ā€˜did’ double him was when we were up 3 with 30 secs left. We weren’t supposed to. Andrien dug down on him, coming off the guard who hit a 3 in his absence, tying the game. Price said he specifically told the team to live with a 2, but no 3’s, but they did not execute (he did not mention any names).

Jobey also mentioned (which I was telling my friends during the game) we should try to change up d’s more often when a team is hot like that just to try and keep them off balance. They did that more in the 1st half but stayed mostly man in the 2nd.

It was not a well coached game for us. Even if we did some of the above though, the defensive effort was just horrific. The personnel isn’t good for defense for reasons already mentioned, but to be honest, the effort just wasn’t there either.

As far as Price getting raked over the coals, I do think people are just numb at this point. Also, though Major was never afforded a honeymoon period for some reason, I think for people our fan base wants to be successful, we give a lot of rope. Lambert surely had that, only now are people realizing he really isn’t that great and its ok to criticize him. Price people want to succeed so they look the other way for now. I do like alot of what Price does, but can he ever put a competent defense out on the floor? I don’t know. Seems like his teams will try to outscore/shoot you. That’s ok with me…if it works. It did not against a marginal team last night.

Here is my take on the coach and his defense. Last year our median points against in non-conference play was 84. It dropped to 75 in conference play. Does that mean the defense improved or that our competition was not as good? Probably a little bit of both. His situation is different than the last coach and the one before. His cupboard was bare when he got here. He didn’t blow it up after a 20 win season. Nor did we watch the glory days of old erode under his watch. We saw team and player progression through the season last year. It convinced me to give it time and see where it goes even when there is a bad loss. I thought the effort was lacking in the 2nd half, but it could have been gassed players this early in the season. We struggle down low and White is not nearly back to form. I think the pieces will come together and it will be a decent season. Still a long way off from being competitive on a national stage out of conference.

I think a lot of people are giving Price a pass for these first two years. He had half the team transfer when he took over and was left hanging with Uchebo only having one year of eligibility.
I think they are improved over last year despite this loss, at least certainly on offense they are. I think the Niners are capable of having a better season wins/losses wise this season too. We’ll see, but I do hope that we get these defensive issues sorted out before conference play.
