UTEP Postgame

Beat that wood to pulp please.

Loved T-Will’s game. Not forcing anything, no crazy plays. It was nice to see.

I love seeing Thorne jam it. Braswell and his layups were so annoying.

Henry has got to be smarter on not picking up fouls when already in trouble. The reach from behind was dumb.

Cherry and his attitude? I like it. Someone on the teams needs it. Clayton/Henry will show it too.

Lester…I am starting to not like his shot selection. Makes 1 three and then jacks up 3 more. Play within the offense please. You are the leading scorer on the team and that is not because you are a great 3 point shooter.

Announcers were slurping all over UTEP. It was fun to get the win. Did we ever lose the lead the whole 2nd half? We might have…I just remember thinking this is close, but we are still in control. Fun game.

Everybody refers to Cherry’s attitude, remember, he’s played in CUSA for a few years. He probably knows a number of these guys and has a history so I’m sure there’s some back and forth. We don’t need unwarranted T’s but that attitude is fine.

Yeah what was the deal with this… it was almost like I was watching a tar hole ACC game they were such homers… does CBS sports have a vested interest in UTEP bball? I know we haven’t been as good as in years but we were in the NIT last year, from the way the announcers were talking or not talking about our team you would have thought we were UNCP.

^^ This.

It was probably a regional announcing team they picked up to use.

From what I saw between cleaning puke, Thorne looked good and TWill seems to have settled into playing his game rather than forcing.

I’d like to see us break one off in someone before too long, the close games are not as much fun.

I love close games, as long as we win.

This game was never really in question. Anytime they even pretended to start a run we answered. We looked like we treated this game as an exhibition. Maybe we should have taken UTEP more seriously, but it was also kind of nice to just see the team having fun.

I feel really bad for the UTEP players that are still there. They played all out and having recently been through a team that was damaged by a few’s selfish actions I know it kills the players they have. Washburn and Brohanon were as good as almost anyone we’ve seen this year, but Washburn was ragged before the game was over. He’s gonna have a long season this year.

I think we have a really good chance at 4-0 in conference before we go on the road to LaTech. Even better, we should only be sitting on one conference loss by USM. 8-1 in conference would be a good way to start the first half of conference play.

^^ says team didn’t take utep serious.

When he plays within himself and doesn’t force things he looks great. When he tries to do too much, he plays like a bull in a china shop.

I hope he keeps playing like he has the last few games. I am no longer cringing when he has the ball.

Nice road win to start conference play. No such thing as an ugly win but that was pretty close. It will be nice to be 2-0 in conference with 2 road wins off the bat.

First 10 games we was averaging 3.1/10.1 from the field, and in the last four he is 3.25/6.75 from the field. He’s definitely not forcing things as much now as he was early in the season.

Also splitting the games up the same, in the first ten his APG/TOPG was 2.3/3.3 and in the last four it is 2.75/2.25. Would still like to see less turnovers but he is trending the right way at the right time.

Ugly game or not, that was a fun one to watch. I admire UTEP for their heart following the recent issues they have dealt with. Though I would have preferred to curb stomp them and make a statement, I’m happy that we stayed in control for the entire second half even if we let them make a (entertaining) game out of it.

Loved watching Henry and Thorne, and even enjoyed watching Williams play.

I had the feeling that the officials where calling fouls a bit one sided in an effort to help protect UTEP’s thin bench. They probably should have called a lot more on UTEP - we could hardly draw a foul when driving to the basket in the second half. In light of our win, I’m fine with that. I’d have rather won like we did than against a UTEP team decimated by players fouling out.

Im just happy to be back in CUSA. Better TV coverage, southern teams. It just feels like home.

This was a great feel good win. Our RPI took a huge jump from this win. We are now at #99 on statsheet and #101 at Kenpom. Also feels good to dominate the boards like that. Not sure we can get away with that kind of a turnover margin against teams like Southern Miss, but we were otherwise strong.

UTSA is just plain awful and I just hope that they don’t hurt our SOS/RPI too much. I like our chances in CUSA this year.

I was very confused not only about the commentators (who very well could have been a regional team) but also about the CBSSN half and post game shows (with Dana Jacobsen hosting and Seth Davis in studio among others). It was designed as a national broadcast but at halftime they only discussed UTEP and only showed UTEP’s highlights and the same thing happened postgame.

I tweeted at CBSSN and CollegeBBallonCBS as well as Seth Davis to see if there was any clarification but got nowhere. It was almost as if nobody told them that Charlotte is now a member of C-USA (with CBS having a partnership with C-USA, they should cover all the teams the same way, ESPECIALLY in a conference match-up). Just really strange.

The game was really enjoyable to watch. Back and forth, fast paced for the most part. The clumsy mistakes that can be avoided were still there but not as many as usual. The level of play was definitely more intense and you could tell both teams really wanted to start 1-0. Great games by Thorne, Henry and Williams.

By the way, it just felt right being on the road at a southern university, in a brightly lit arena with loud fans. We were in the A10 for 8 seasons and every road game always seemed more depressing than the last. I’m so happy to be out of that dump of a conference even if C-USA is much weaker for basketball at the moment.

On to San Antonio we go! I anticipate we’ll be double digit favorites. Let’s take care of business! GO NINERS!

But they did just beat Marshall. Hopefully that gets noticed by the team, and they do a better job putting the opponent away early and finishing the game more focused.

I don’t think UTEP is all that bad with their remaining starters actually, I bet they’ll still win quite a few in CUSA at home unless they wear down by the end of the year. But it did seem like the Niners lacked the focus and intensity you’d like to see consistently that would’ve allowed them to pull away. But maybe that kind of thing is impossible to maintain against lackluster opponents (at least for pretty much every Niners team the last 15-20 years or so).

We also had some interesting lineups in there, suggesting the coaches were playing with lineups some still and you could see that it makes a big difference to have Henry on the floor so his foul trouble made for a closer game too.

If Lester can rein in his shots from deep and become more aggressive in attacking the basket, he is going to be a great player. This is his biggest need for development, along with a little more intensity on D (though he looked better in this game the parts I watched him).

Thorne played really well on offense, made some good choices to pass the ball back out, but gave up a lot of easy baskets on D. He’s also got a ton of potential if he can learn to move his feet and position himself better. He often shows a lot of good energy, but then gets a little flatfooted and out of position on the opposing post player who goes around him. I’m hoping he can work on that through the season, because he’s large and athletic enough to be a good inside anchor for the defense.

It’s funny how differently two fans can see the same game (see my post right below yours). I thought UTEP played with more intensity than the Niners overall. There were some stretches where the Niners seemed to pick it up quite a bit, but at other times they seemed a little unfocused to me. But it could just be I’m seeing mistakes in positioning more than lack of energy.

I also found that incredibly odd.

Yes, this makes us a different team. Henry as a viable outside threat will only open up the driving opportunities for him, where he’s already strong.

I’m glad we didn’t destroy UTEP. I’d love them to stay high and steal a win against a UAB, USM type team.

I tweeted Dick Vitale about the announcer situation and he wasn’t happy
