VCU Postgame

Well VCU is just a better team than us, that much is clear.

Game would of been a lot closer if we made our free throws (12-22) and didn’t turn the ball over nine more times.

clt’s nuggets:

In the last two games, we have tied the game after a run, but have not taken the lead.

Vcu is well coached and can be a model for this team

With mayfield and Thompson, we win this game.

Free C-Pip.

We get almost a dozen more rebounds, shoot over 50% from the field and the game is still never really close.

It’s ALL about turnovers. That and the lack of any kind of 3-pt shooting to help us make up a 10-pt lead. Yet again, Ivan gets no PT, which I simply can’t comprehend. He hits three threes for us vs. Temple, then can’t see the floor tonight. What gives?

Benk got some time in the first half. He was not good handling the ball.

But it does bring up a question as to why do the deep bench players get zero meaningful minutes in the second half every game? Thorne and Benk are to who I am referring.

If Major does not get a couple of shooters, I’m guessing his tenure could be a short one. Don’t bring up the record. His team has not had a good win in awhile.

Next year is important for Major but his job is in better shape now then it was at the start of the year.

Benny struggled mightily out there. He’s a 3 point specialist, which is fine because he’s a freshman and has time to develop more of his game.

I thought we just got beat by a better team. They knocked down contested shots. I really didn’t think we played that badly. VCU is just better than us.

-G-[/quote]Benkovic played in the first half. Had a rough time out there with the way the refs were letting them play. He was part of why they stretched the lead in the 1st half, if I remember right.

Ft’s, turnovers, a few defensive breakdowns, not playing rough enough given the way the game was called, and some poor shooting. VCU is a better team, but still a bit disappointed to not make it more of a game at home.

VCU just fouls every time down, refs only call some of them, run 10 guys through while Smart whines about the foul differential, then they foul some more. It’s effective, but I think the “havoc” defense only works because the referees are afraid to whistle a foul every time down. Not why they won tonight, they hit some big shots and Niners did not play well enough. But I really think the refs should just keep calling all those grabs until they stop doing it so much, as it’s what generates so many steals and slows the other team from getting around their guys. Whatever happened to the new emphases on hand-checking? (Edit: I realize this would mean more fouls on us too, we reach like crazy to get steals…)

3 huge flaws are killing us

1.We DO NOT value the ball. It’s disgusting. Sloppy & forced passes, continually driving into dangerous spots on the floor. It needs to stop .
2. We can’t shoot. You need to be able to shoot the 3 in this game, we are 1 dimensional and much easier to defend. Recruit some shooters
3. Make your f***ing free throws…

The s*** just got real starting with Temple, 3 more games in the gauntlet and things need to change or we will emerge 17-9

I went to Halton to watch a basketball game tonight. When one starts, will someone please let me know? What I saw tonight did not qualify. It was absolute garbage, and worse than that, it was a miserable enviroment for a fan of either team.

In general, outside of head to head games, I pull hard for the teams in this league. Although I have a good deal of “sports hate” for teams like GW and Dayton, it stops there. That kind of passion is ultimately a net positive for the game.

There is nothing positive about VCU basketball and VCU fanbase. The fans, mirroring the team, show a complete unawareness of the rules, and ignorance of what the game is all about. They aslo whine about every little slight against them, even while oblivious to the far more numerous offenses they commit. Ultimately, it contributes to the degradation of the game itself, and finds the game mired in the cesspool of the absolute worst of athletic competition.

I haven’t ever rooted against an A10 program, but will gladly do so against this cesspool of hicks and this garbage product that university puts on the floor.

Let’s don’t go storming to Major’s house with pitchforks just yet. His 1st real year of recruiting is the sophomores. A lot of good pieces for the future and as they grow so does our respect. We lost to a good team who knew how to play against us and had the personnel to play against us. We have now lost Mayfield and JTT which hurts in a game like this. On the other hand, it is games like this that will help our younger players grow. This game was too big for Benny, Ingrim, and Thorne. It would’ve been for Clayton and Clark had they not had so much playing time already.

Turnovers, missed free throws and ZERO 3pg attack lost us this game.

0 3pt attempts in first half. 2 attempts in 39 minutes. That’s crazy to me. Especially when we were down the entire 2nd half. Ingram and Nickerson were wide open several of times. Once the ball went down low, it never came out until the last minute of the game. Some times players gave up open 3s. I don’t think we should shoot 15 3s per game but come on… We need atleast some attempts to keep the defense honest and ofcourse the 3s always bring energy.

Vcu played crazy in your face defense. I thought we get away with a lot of reaching fouls but they get away with far more. They were smacking arms all over the place.

Coach major needs to post a Craigslist ad for a couple shooters.

Mayfield would have helped a lot this game, no doubt.

Young team. Vcu is a good well coached team.

Halton was rocking.

Damn NA,
If you didn’t have the Niner logo below your name I would have thought you were an old Davidson fan talking about the thugs from Charlotte. LMAO!!

They just came in and whipped us.

VCU is better than us. It is that simple. Got beat by a better team. Its the same crap every game. Can’t make free throws, can’t (Maybe can but choose not to) shoot wide open threes. Braswell was again a non-factor. This team knew exactly who to pressure and how to trap whoever had the ball.

Side note…After every time out we give up a three. I swear to you. I started joking about a couple games ago but after every single TO the other team calls we give up a three. Start paying attention.

It was absolutely beautiful when we tied the game. Halton was loud. Made me want to cry.

But for it to work, we’d have to actually hit some of those 3’s taken. I’m not sure taking more 3’s would really convince a team to guard us if we miss most of them.

ENough of this PC bullshit. Look, ken, I appreciate you trying to take the high road, but let’s call this what it was - horseshit. This was a 7 point game and their entire team should have fouled out shortly after halftime. That is absolutely zero hyperbole. They literally foul everytime down the court, multiple times. They make UAB of old look like clean basketball.

My favorite anecdotal posession was the 4 fouls on PH when he drove the lane and was hip checked almost to the ground on his shot and the whistle thatw as finally blown was against us.

It’s garbage. If this is where the game is headed, I’m not interested.

Turnovers and free throw shooting are absolutely terrible. Same ol script.

Given the numbers in the student section, they sounded pathetic. Half of 104 was loud, and that was it. VCU’s crowd was louder.

We made 7/10 last game against Temple. I don’t want our worst 3 pt shooters to take them but def Ingram or Nickerson or even Henry if he is open. Twill shot in the air, I promise I knew that was banking in. Looked terrible.

I rarely heard the vcu crowd, only after a made shot by them which is normal.
