The Solar Decathlon is a biennial competition hosted by the United States Department of Energy. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with optimal energy production and maximum efficiency.

UNC Charlotte was selected as one of the competing teams for Solar Decathlon 2013. Now the fun and work begins. This is a student-based project, meaning…we NEED you, the student. Team UNCC needs you! Help represent your school in the most prestigious, interdisciplinary, green-movement competition around.

This is a really awesome event. It is great press for our school as well.

The one that was taking place in DC when I lived there was huge. App State had a house in that competition. App doesn’t have arch. or engineering, but they do have a solar/renewable program and have for years. I believe they fared pretty well in the competition, although they didn’t win.

I think we have a pretty good chance of getting high marks. We have an innovative polymer concrete that we developed ourselves and I really love our design.
