On FOX Edge when they showed some of the responses to the question about whether we should get a team or not, the first response had a person say, āNo they shouldnāt get a team. Bonnie Cone didnāt want them to have a team.ā Later, I was told that this was not only not true but that Ms. Cone bought the uniforms for the team.
HOWEVER, this article is about the NAME CHANGE.

So my question is, regarding the name of this University, what did Ms. Cone want? I know when we joined the system she was very happy and proud because it is a great system to be a part of; but now that we no longer need our UNC prefix crutch, does anyone know if she too would have supported the name change that we so desperately need? I have heard a few alumni bring this issue up, but I donāt know who to believe and they may be mistaking her enthusiasm for our inclusion in the system for also being enthusiastic about having a slave name.
If anyone can answer this question that would be great. If there is documented evidence either way Iād love to see that.

The only documented evidence I have is the actually conversation I had with her where she told me she would love to have football and the only reason we didnāt was the cost.
There has long been a rumor that Bonnie had a nephew or something, who was injured playing football, so she was against having a team at āherā school. I believe that was just an urban legend, but it was very prevalent. Iām glad to hear that she said otherwise to Jimmyhat.

thatās an urban legend that youāll find at every major, non-football playing school in the country.

That Urban legend was what I was told when I first came to Charlotte, I specifically asked her about that and she said she had no idea where that came from and never had a relative injured playing football, now there is a very good reason we donāt have a bowling teamā¦
Lew is absolutely correct, this urban legend is fairly consistant with every non-football playing school. UNCW has it as well attributed the the requisite āLarge Donorā.
With all do respect to Ms. Cone, but do you really care what she would have wanted? The university is in such a different place today than it was 50 years ago, that her opinion may be antiquated.

It might make for a good advertisement from the athletic department.
"This just inā¦Bonnie Cone did not have a nephew injured playing football, so it was not a factor for Charlotte not having football. IT WAS AN URBAN LEGEND.
What is true is the Charlotte needs to raise funds to be able to have football. We need you!"

Honestly, I agree. We are in a very different place than we were during her most active time here, but others care what she wanted. I've heard on a couple of occasions that an alum doesn't think we should change our name because Ms. Cone wouldn't want it. I need to have a response for this I think. This battle is a battle of public support and therefore any way I can get people to come to our side is worthwhile IMO.
Ms. Cone was completely for athletics at this university. She helped promote the Owlās home games by getting a banner placed on the railroad overpass on Trade street. She is also quoted in the CC UNC News (our first newspaper) as to helping arrange cuts and excusing players from class so they could attend practice and travel for games. Cone is also quoted back in 1994 as to saying that she has no idea where the urban legend about her child or family member being hurt in a football accident. In that same interview she said she was for a football team and bought the Owls new uniforms in 1948 before their season was cancelled due to lack of interest. This whole topic is addressed in the 9/16 issue of the UTimes and you can read it on Nineronline.com. All this info is up in the university archives.

Yes, you should care. Doesnāt mean you would have to agree if you had divergent views. The reason I say that is Dr. Cone is THE reason there is a UNC Charlotte. Just a matter of respect. Of course, as we know, Dr. Cone was NOT anti-football and during her tenure as director/president of CCUNC/Charlotte College we did have football.
Anyway, since weāre dealing with THE UNC Charlotte urban legend that wonāt go away, I have to state my mind. This always gets my blood boiling because this urban legend is libel/slander against Dr. Cone and itās really sad that FOX Edge would participate in that. Of course, I am biased since I knew Dr. Cone, but I just wish those who continue to perpetuate this myth would rot in a hell decorated in Carolina Blue!

The question was about her opinion of our name. Would she have supported a name change or did she want us to be always be an apparent satellite campus of UNC? Has she ever stated an opinion either way at all?

Sorry, I just really get pissed when I read/hear about Miss Bonnie didnāt want football because her son/nephew/etc. was injured bull****. :ticked:
Anyway, I donāt know that it would have mattered either way on the name, to be honest. She was director of CCUNC when it Charlotte College and president of CC when it became UNCC, so she presided over two name changes during her tenure.

That's a good way to look at it. She was all for name change if it was for the betterment of the school. :)
Itās documented that in the 1940ās when we had a team for 2 years, she asked local businesses about putting up signs. That sounds pro-football to me.

THAT IS THE FUNNIEST FOOTBALL RELATED PICTURE YET!!!

Iāve been there once with my Carolina alum wife. The locals call it the Deandome.
Not having football at Charlotte all these years has been my fault. Several years back I popped Bonnie Coneās grandson as he broke through the defensive line heading towards the endzone. With my 4.2 speed, I ran across the field and knocked him flat on his ass for good.
Bonnie forgave me years later and now we have football. So you can thank me now.

I do respect Dr Cone, but in terms of whether we should change the name today, Iām not sure her opinion would matter. I think the opinion of the university community as a whole is what is most important and not a single personās opinion.
