Thread for the boys who are at the game.
What happened during that period of time? Did Nance swing 'bows, or was it Rice?
They didn’t show much on the TV feed online and I thought the refs making a no-call (not even a warning) was weird.

It’s tough to just see the score updates, but really glad we pulled this one out. I was concerned about this game and for good reason. Memphis has been playing some good ball as of late but I’m really glad we handled their 2nd half run to begin the half. Really seemed like we kept our composure and then went on a run of our own. Of course it was also good to have a live phone update from Halton…
GO NINERS!
It was hard to tell, like most people, I was watching the game move down the court so I couldn’t tell. Man, you got to love Kummer. The man is 100% Niner all the way.
I thought Kummer was ready to take his teeth out & go at it.
Side note to all Niner fans that don’t remember Kummer - He lost his front teeth at the coliseum and still kept playing.
I love Kummer. That guy has heart and guts and he’s no longer playing. I thought he was going to go Kermit Washington on some people…looked like a bat out of hell.
As for the incident, I missed it. I just heard a commontion and saw Kuuuuuuuuuumer run towards center court. A fan behind me said he saw some Memphis player jawing at Nance, with Nance just walking away.
Anybody notice that Memphis had taken the crowd out of the game? After the altercation between the two teams, i felt the intesity come back and it stayed that way the rest of the game. Way to go Niners and way to go Halton!!!
I think I saw a good amount of it. Rice was yelling at Nance, Nance worked toward him to talk smack, Rice pushes or bumps Nance (nothing too big) but then Rice was really glaring down Nance.
Nance looked over at the center court official who was watching the whole thing and gave a “I didn’t do anything” look with his hands up in the air. At this point a big black assistant for Memphis (and another smaller assistant) come out to center court to break it up and 2 Charlotte assistants meet them out there immediately (Is Kummer the big black guy or the big white guy?).
Eventually, some of the assistants had to be restrained from going after each other. They were pointing and yelling and trying to get after each other for a solid 30 seconds or so.
Lutz was off in the corner, Calipari too. Eventually they come out and had words.
Sidenote: I thought DeAngelo was going to get his first action of the year during this altercation. He came out to center court looking like he was going to take out some Memphis kids.
This entire exchange can be attributed to the refs letting the game get out of control with bad calls on both sides. Everyone was so worked up.
The fight followed a 6 point run by Charlotte that was capped off by Eddie’s dunk off a steal, so I don’t know if the crowd was out of the game.
But it definitely got Halton rocking though. The game was different after that.
It started with Nance under the basket and had been going on for a while with a lot of elbows. After the time out was called as both teams were heading to their benches Nance made sure he bumped into the last 2 Memphis players heading to the bench. It was just a carry over from the intensity and physical play underneath. It escalated from there.
The tall balck assistant coach (who is an arrogant ass) and the Memphis trainer / student assistant were the ones mouthing with Kummer. The tall black assistant from Memphis is the same jerk who a couple of years ago was sitting on the bench when an oppossing teams player hustled for a loose ball and fell into his lap. He actually threw the kid off of him and they had words. It was one of the most unprofessional things I think I have ever seen at a game.
I can honestly say it was a badly officiated game(a Halton norm) for both sides but I have never seen a team and its coach talk more to the officials than tonight. Every foul Memphis committed was followed by the player going up to the ref. The refs were explaining every call (ridicuolous). I think Cal was actually trying to get a technical at one point and they never popped him. It was unbelievable to see an opposing coach actually walk all the way out onto the court sarcasstically clapping on a call(showing up the ref) and not get a “T”. At the end of the game the state trooper that was with Cal could not even keep up with him as he chased after the officials.
As far as Kummer goes I was on the front row in the end zone when he lost his 2 front teeth. He actually reached down into the blood on the floor and picked them up. He is hardcore and I would have his back any day.
bobrian, Bobby Kummer is the tall white assistant coach. He played for the good guys maybe 10 years ago. He hustled and fought and scrapped every bit as good as Basden, but often couldn’t get the ball in the whole. One of my all time favorite Niners.
Replay tonight of the game 7:30 pm C-Set
Cant wait to see what set off all the drama (somehow I missed the start of it) and see Charlotte win again of course! Great game and very fun!
FYI, for all the niners who don’t remember or never saw Kummer in action, he is now the director of basketball operations, taking over for dee tolliver. he had been slumming it down at texas a&m with melvin watkins.
he graduated in from UNCC in 96. as i recall, i never thought he was THAT good of a player, and recently, when i noticed him on the bench i would joke about him with some of my younger 49er alum cohorts. if you look through this years UNCC baskeetball programs, where it shows career leaders, i don’t think his names pops up too many times, but he was tall and tough, and i damn sure wouldn’t want him yelling at me the way he was going after the memphis assistants.
and after last night, i will never joke about him again.

The Memphis fans apparently saw it and said Nance started it (I know, I’m taking that with a grain of salt). I hope that’s not the case. I’d like to see what happened too.
bummer

We were working our way back into the game with that run, but I thought the whole incident pumped up both the players and fans for the remainder of the game. Aside from the missed foul shots we missed when we could have sealed it, I thought this incident gave us the fire we needed to finish Memphis off. Getting the crowd back into it at that point seemed to kill their momentum as well.
where did Dee Tolliver go? A real classy guy, Dee.
Chris Nance mixing it up? :o
I really, Really, REALLY Love this guys toughness. He’ll take a charge anytime he gets the chance, fights for a rebound, and if a small 6’ wannabe Dajuan Wagner comes in the lane, he’ll put him and his shot on the ground. I love watching him play.
When Kummer played for us he was the kind of guy you could easily love, he was a blue collar player who did whatever was asked of him and gave his all. When he fouled someone going to the hole they didn’t make the shot. He also knew that you couldn’t take those fouls home with you so you might as well use them.

It looked like Kummer was going to get into a fight with one of the white assts. for Memphis, Ed Schilling or Derek Kellogg, they look alike, but I think it was Schilling.
I wanted to see Kummer jack him up.
Why isn’t Nance a starter? We shouldn’t renew Iti’s scholarship next year. He just stands there.
What about the foul with 1.8 secs.? The Memphis guy did a tackle. Why wasn’t that a T or Intentional Foul so we could get the ball back after the free throws. Memphis half court attempt at the end was to close for comfort, & wouldn’t have happened if we had the ball, but we still won.
Both coaches step over the line, but in the 1st half, Calipari was almost to the 3-pt. line with 5 Charlotte & 5 Memphis guys running to the basket in front of him, but no T from the Refs. for a 6-on-5 match-up.
After the Kummer incident, the refs started calling ticky-tacky fouls on us.
I bet no one else will mess with us as long as we have enforcer Kummer on the sideline. I was a year behind Kummer in school, so I remember him playing. I told him when he was a Student Asst. under Watkins that we should retire his jersey. He’s one tough cookie.
Kummer for Mayor in '05!!!
McCrory & Cannon can’t hang with the UNC Charlotte Party!
Man, you got to love Kummer. The man is 100% Niner all the way.
Let’s not get too carried away, he did leave with Melvin and would not be here if Wat didn’t get canned.
All he really did was walk to mid court and run his mouth at some asshole assistant. Anyone who was at Charlotte when Kummer was playing saw him in his share of frat house scuffles.
