What should the Panthers do with Peppers?

I think that they need to franchise him, and then trade him. Why would you let a guy of that caliber just walk? He said that he wants them to just let him go…but who in their right mind would do that. I think they need to sign Jordan Gross to the deal that he wants and deserves, and then franchise Peppers and then trade him for some draft picks.

Peppers said he wants to be in a 3-4 defense where he can play outside linebacker. He also said that he doesn’t want to be franchised. But i wouldn’t want to be franchised either, because he won’t get a choice in where he goes if he gets traded. Here is an article about it…http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3907659

So what do you think? Post your thoughts here. Along with the Panthers draft needs.

Play a 3-4.

Not for Peppers… however I would love to see him at OLB…

…but I just think a 3-4 is more effective.

Sorry for the noob question, but what exactly does it mean to franchise a player?

Something like a $17 million one-year deal.

Basically, we can say “**** yo agent” and change the rules a little bit.

You can franchise one player on your roster each year. You have to pay the franchised player the average of the top five paid players at his position.

I say franchise him and trade him.Hopefully you get a 1st round pick at least for him. That’s something the Panthers presently do not have for 2009.

What he said.

My man Charles Chandler had a good article outlining the situation right now in today’s paper. looking for link…

  1. Your man? Did I miss something?

  2. We have a paper?

last year the chiefs traded jarrett allen to the vikings for a 1st, 2nd and 3rd round pick…i think the panthers could possible get the same thing if there is a team really wanting him…i say at the least they can get a 1st and 3rd round pick for him. And use that 1st rounder on a DE…we really need a CB too, maybe use the 2nd round pick on one of those.

this was something Chandler wrote yesterday…

It’d be tough to pull the same deal for Peppers that Allen got. I may be wrong but I think Allen is younger. Peppers, like it or not, has a reputation of taking plays off and b/c of it comes off as somewhat selfish at times (His interview at the pro bowl was a joke, but I guess that’s what he gets for taking communications classes at chapel hill).

I do think you could get a 1st and 4th rounder fairly easily. At the worst a 2nd and 4th.

I think we can get more for Peppers than KC got for Allen. While Allen is 3 years younger, Peppers freakish athletic ability will sucker some team into over paying for him. I think a 1st and 3rd is the absolute least they will get, just my opinion.

With the economy this way it is even effecting the way teams do business. I don’t expect for anyone to overpay, unless its Dallas.

I mean overpay as in offer more pics for him than he is really worth based on his performance thus far - not the actual $ amount of his contract.

or the yankees…haha

It is a no brainer that we will franchise him. The key is signing Gross so that we can go ahead and use the franchise on Peppers.

If we don’t get a deal with Gross, which player would you franchise?

If we franchise Gross, we keep him and have a really good left tackle. Franchise Peppers, we end up with some good draft picks (Fox sucks at the draft though)

I would not say Hurney/Fox suck at the draft. They have picked up some good talent in the past. Stewart, Otah, Deangelo, Beason, Davis and there are more. They have missed on some too - but so do most teams.

If they have to choose - I would say franchise Gross. We might be able to pick up a FA to replace part of what we lose with Pep, but with Deangelo and Stewart blowing up we need to keep the O line intact - IMO.

I think they should trade him to Denver for Patrick Ramsey
