What to do with Ron Sanchez?

If we are going to go with another assistant instead of hiring a proven head coach (at whatever level I honestly don’t care at this point. Bobby was a HC at Pfiefer and did great, just get us someone with HC experience who knows their X’s and O’s and doesn’t play an oddball system please!!!) then screw it just keep Sanchez.

I get the worry about roster flip in AAC year one and Brice’s senior year. I can live with it for one year if they think the roster disintegrates if he’s fired for no other reason than to NOT do the Williams family a disservice.

However, if we lose the roster anyway then they need to can him and move on.

And no more gimmick hires.

Go down to lower ranked conferences and get a winner on the come up. Period.

If and thats a big IF - you retain Brice and Aly and can add pieces around them then we could win with the right coach. If you lose Aly and you basically are left with Brice you try to throw pieces around I don’t think thats enough to win at a decent rate.

The good news is Igor and Braswell will be locked in to coming back and Gipson too. Those kids that transferred once would have to sit out a year if they leave - right?

Gipson has exhausted his eligibility.

OK Am I thinking Patterson then?

Patterson has two more years.

Yeah Patterson has more time.

I think Aly and Folks are the big worries for transferring.

Aly could transfer up. Maybe Folks could, maybe.

Aly would be a hot commodity.

Aly would have dozens of offers, many from high majors.

Folkes has major upside, but given what he’s done so far, I think he’s looking more at a lateral transfer conference-wise.

Aly and Fearne are inter connected. Sometimes I wondered if JT got more minutes because of their friendship and keeping Aly. Aly would have to go to a specific offense. Looks like a B10 type player.

Let’s be real if we fire Sanchez I could see everyone leaving, which is the way college basketball works these days, that doesn’t mean we would be significantly worse, I would hope Brice would stay since the school means more to his family than any of the other players… get a guy in here that can work wonders in the portal and coach and let’s go!

We fire Sanchez and hire the right guy and keep the roster we could make some noise next year. Keep Sanchez and maybe we win 18 again and turd out again. Only one choice to me. This is not a total rebuild.

We have to be prepared it will be a near total rebuild with talent if you make the change. That is just to say we make the change with eyes wide open. I think Brice stays because he came here to play here not for a coach. Braswell, Igor and Patterson likely stick because they aren’t going to want to sit out.

Can a new coach win with a core of Brice, Igor, Braswell and Patterson? That seems like a good core to me, but not sure I would put money on them to be a winner out of the gate with a new coach.

This is always typical logic…fire the coach if/when the team quits on him.

My counter to that…if he’s coaching as well as he can and the kids are playing as hard as they can for him…and he still finishes the year on a 7-11 slide to finish 9-11 in Conference and go one and done in the tourney, is that any better?

THAT is as good as they can do when they are playing as hard as they can for him!?

If so…then that is even worse indictment of him IMO…because that is his ceiling and as good as he can do, right?

If we know that is as good as he can do when the kids play that hard for him…it should be clear that he ain’t the guy.

Wasting your time man. Some of these guys will defend Ron to the day he’s fired. They’re so blinded by green tinted glasses that they can’t possible see or say anything negative about the program. In their minds it’s always a year away.

I mean look at him anyway. He has two accounts because he couldn’t figure out logging into the same account on a phone and a computer. You aren’t arguing with genius level intellect here.

I could try providing counter points to alot of the posts here, but it would be like playing whack-a-mole or reasoning with a 3 year old about bedtime.

Basically the forums here can be divided in to two groups; passionate fans and passionate haters. (Seems like Americans are divided over everything.) It’s been that way ever since these forums appeared on line, just insert name of coach, AD, Administration, team, player, …

At this point there are two options we’re facing:

  1. Ron is back next year to try and continue steadily, albeit slowly, building back to where we want to be Which will make those of us that are tired of the constant start over happy and the haters will be happy because they can complain all next year.

  2. Ron is not brought back and only the haters are happy. Because the odds are, we’ll be back in a hole again (maybe even below ECU), but thanks to Ron and the staff, maybe not as deep of a hole as the one he inherited and the haters can insert new names and start hating on the next man up.

You could have saved a lot of words and just said ā€œI’m happy with cupcake schedules, mediocrity, and irrelevanceā€

As a successful AD, you can’t be that scared to make a new hire. You have to know that you have to the capabilities to hire someone that can come in and bring guys that can play, and get the guys left here in more of a position to win. I get your argument, but you can’t view it that way as an AD.

Just want to add in Brice potentially has 2 years left if he wants it. Who is to say Brice sticks around if we keep Ron? If he wants to make money, JY showed the path. Brice has a lot more potential for success now and post college if he is in an uptempo offense.

Given the life of a Niner, Mike will announce Ron’s staying and we will lose our best players a week or two later. Being a Niner fan is one giant kick in the balls, so I wouldn’t at all be shocked to see things play out like that.

It comes down to 2 simple words - mediocrity or excellence. Which description does the NINER Nation want our program to be known as. I, myself, will only and always subscribe to excellence. Whatever the original plan was by Ron when he was hired just hasn’t worked. So we can keep punting year after year hoping that all of the planets align and the system starts producing respectable results; but with the goals of keeping our dwindling fanbase happy, expanding the fanbase, grabbing the attention of sponsors and donors, we just don’t have the luxury of time like the larger programs around the US and for us, in NC. Ron has had ample time and players to move the needle somewhere between mediocrity and excellence, however he hasn’t been able to get us past mediocre.

Would a coaching change shake up the roster; maybe, but I haven’t heard too many complaining about this same scenario presenting itself in football with Biff. At some point, you just have to be willing to admit that it just isn’t working and go in a different direction. I can’t think of a single other career path in which these types of results would be acceptable unless you work in government, where mediocrity is praised and expected

I will support any coach, including Ron, if it is demonstrated that excellence can be achieved. Unfortunately that didn’t and hasn’t occured.

If Ron stays and we lose Brice, Igor or Zay I won’t renew my tickets or 49er club until he’s gone or turns it around and I have to crawl back !
I know they won’t miss my little bit of money but I cant do this anymore. Losing Jahmir and the constant losing recruit battles has taken its toll.
I’m afraid Mike is trying to let the football noise deflect from the situation so he doesn’t have to make a decision.
