What to do with Ron Sanchez?

And I prefer the ā€œCompete for Championshipsā€ bill of goods that we’ve been sold.

But I am beginning to believe that ā€œGold Standardā€ is more in line with ā€œCupcake Schedules, mediocrity and irrelevance.ā€

We’re basically back to ā€œKnow your roleā€ and ā€œManage Expectations.ā€

Thought Mike Hill was different…and better than that. I guess not.

You do realize Mark Price has a better winning percentage in CUSA than Ron Sanchez. I know Price was really bad but Sanchez hasn’t really moved us as far in the right direction as you would like to think.

Agree this is crazy in isolation, though I do wonder if he’s protecting his player a bit. Option one on the play was obviously Williams but he was covered, but if option 2 was Patterson driving to the low block, then that’s just illogical. They had time for a drive and kick or a 2nd pass option once Williams was covered (should have called timeout to talk about it after the foul), can’t believe they were thinking Patterson driving in on their athletic taller guards was a good option. He got blocked by about 3 guys at once, someone had to be open.

I don’t know what to say about Sanchez. Probably time to move on, but I’m not excited at all about another new hire at this point. I also like the players we have even if they’ve sometimes struggled so I’ll be bummed to see them most likely leave. The team was much better this year than last, but that’s not saying much, and how much do those close losses come down to style of play / coaching rather than bad luck? Hate that we are changing coaches so frequently for the wrong reasons. We’re basically hoping for another Mullins-like miracle now, which doesn’t happen very often.

What if we hired a Pitino or someone potentially as impactful?

Also, while I get pretty passionate on here and may not share opinions with everyone here, I have no desire to personally attack any of our other fans or see anyone else do it either.

Just remember guys - I think we all want the same thing in the end. We just disagree about the best way to get there.

Wowwwww. I didn’t think it could get much worse then the price years.

An embarrassingly low bar and Ron couldn’t even get over that.

Why do many think If Ron is fired we will lose a lot of players? You can see the disgust on the players faces at the end of games. I think a fresh face with a new game plan would give many of these guys hope. Most of our best players do not fit Ron’s style of play anyway. I believe with the right hire we could actually improve greatly next year. I’m certainly willing to take that chance. Going nowhere fast right now…

But I think you’ll agree, that had we taken a 3- pointer, even a wide open one and missed, there would be just as many on here saying it was a bad play and we should have driven to the basket and tried to draw a foul or get a layup and it would be fire Ron for calling a bad play. Hindside is a lot clearer than knowing what the result will be in the moment.

Would hate to see Ali go. But you take Ali and Threadgill… I’ll take Milicic and Braswell. I like my side…

I don’t think that most would had specifically called for his job based on one play such as the one that occurred or one that could have occurred during the game. It comes down to a complete season and not one play, and in this case, numerous seasons. If his past seasons and this season would have been at a level that many think it should had, then the last play of the game would had just been a ā€œdamnā€ moment. But history tends to always repeat itself and Ron is not exempt from that., and with that being known, the last play turned into a ā€œF’ing damn, WTH, Ron’s got to goā€ moment. I can’t speak for everyone else, but that is where I stood at the end of the game.

A little off Topic, but relevant the players do not fit Ron’s system.

Not sure if this is by design by the coaching staff, but the players we have brought in are mainly offensive players that need to learn to play better defense while Ron is a defensive coach. I find that kind of odd. Outside of Musa and maybe Folkes, all of the players came in as more offensive minded.

And some people have been bashing Ron nonstop for three years.

I am not defending Ron. I am trying to be objective about coaching alternatives and the cost of getting yet another coach to start ā€œrebuildingā€.

clt says this year’s team seemed to get along very well, they just need a new coach

I didn’t realize that, wow.

I just don’t feel the hype for Sanchez next year. We are going into a new conference with little to no excitement with recruiting. Everyone is holding their breath on who we will lose from the roster. I feel like Ron hasn’t been terrible in his time, however he has lost the big games. I think had we handled UTSA, lost to UAB in OT, beat MT, and lost in a tight one to FAU he would have earned enough to stay. However, the way we lost the UTSA game and the MT game should seal his fate. Hill has a tough decision, but I will still watch next season even if Ron sticks.

In year 5…shouldn’t the coach and his philosophy and his roster and his recruiting be 100% set?? His system is fully implemented 5yrs in. All of these players are ā€œhis.ā€ His recruiting relationships and his recruiting pipeline should be established and his recruiting strategy and plan should be set as well based on positional need and experience.

That leaves the only variable…and that is the team’s response to him and their effort. Have they bought in and do they play hard for him. It’s pretty obvious that they do. They play hard for each other and for him…they play their tails off.

So…if he has 5yrs of implementing:
His team…his roster…his system…his recruiting…his philosophy…his culture…his gameplanning…his strength and conditioning program…is all set. And the team plays together and hard for each other and for him.
And yet…9-11 in a bad Conference is as good as all of that gets you…what is missing? What’s the excuse? What else can you possibly point to that could lead to improvement going forward? There’s nothing else left at this point that will get any better.

It can’t be talent either. He has accumulated 5yrs of his hand picked talent. All of his recruits for 5 years…the cupboard should be as full as it can get (barring injuries…which ALL teams deal with).
If not though…Does that mean he misses on talent…mis-judges talent…if so…that’s pretty damning as well.

Just don’t understand those that think we’re getting better and showing progress so the assumption is that we will continue to get better and show progress…what exactly is going to improve with Sanchez here? Everything should be as set and stable as it can get…what can get better??

His horrendous rotations and in-game coaching are 2 things I can think of but he has shown ZERO interest or ability in getting any better at that to this point.

So those that want him here…what are you optimistic about that is missing and will improve under Sanchez that will get us to the next level? And what makes you believe that will change/improve?

The only case to keep him is roster stays together and we see what he can do if he runs it back Problem is what has he done to make us think it will be any different? He’s under performed two straight years.

Mike loves Ron more than Healy loved West so I expect him to stay…but if Ron stays and Brice leaves…I may go scorched Earth on Mike.

I don’t get the feeling Mike is that big a fan of Ron. He’s not going to say anything publicly besides support the coach.

I expect there to be some kind of roster turnover. Question is how much and who.
