Per the Conference USA website:

This season thus far as per our box scores…

04-05 - 10 - 72,897 - 7,290, 8-2

1996-1997 - 5,544, 10-2
1997-1998 - 6,717, 10-1
1998-1999 - 6,676, 11-2
1999-2000 - 6,849, 9-3
2000-2001 - 7,108 (7th in C-USA), 10-2
2001-2002 - 7,053 (6th in C-USA), 11-3
2002-2003 - 6,423 (6th in C-USA), 11-4
2003-2004 - 7,381 (8th in C-USA), 10-3

Our attendance last year was our 2nd worst ever in Halton. It’s hard to believe more people came out during the NIT year or the year we hosted the Pepsi Tournament than last year when Louisville, Cincy and Marquette came to Halton.

QUOTE (finalfourtyniners @ Feb 8 2005, 03:32 PM)

now do they count the band, gang green, and the athletic section…do they just assume we fill those seats every game

clt writes that our attendence is growning slowly but surely. clt thinks the move to the a-10 could help if we dominate the league and become ranked. we all now how political the rankings are and how flawed they are, but your average fan looks at the rankings.

In the box score for cincy, that attendance is listed as 9,105(Halton’s capacity). I find it hard to believe that every single ticket holder made it to the game. This leads me to believe they are posting ticket sales for the attendance instead of the actual readings on the turnstile readings. That way it doesn’t reflect corporate seats that are empty at other games.

The definition of attendance:

  1. The act of attending.
  2. The persons or number of persons that are present.
    Definition of attendance from dictionary.com

keywords, number of people that are present, not tickets sold.

I’ve wondered whether they count the band, Gang Green, and the student athletes as well. If you ever look at the women’s attendance, some of the non-conference games had less than 500 people show up. If that includes any of those groups, that makes it even sadder than it already is.

I’ve also wondered whether they report the attendance as the actual number in attendance or the number of tickets sold. Having been at three sellouts (Louisville last year, Cincinnati last year and this year), I can say that I’ve seen open seats at all three. I’m nearly positive they report based on ticket sales, and I’m also nearly positive that it’s a somewhat common practice. Albums, for instance, are certified gold or platinum based upon units shipped, not units sold. You could sell 5 records, but as long as you ship 500,000, you’ve got yourself a gold record. As far as tickets go, now that they’ve got those scanners for scanning tickets when you come in, it seems like that would make it a lot easier for them to do an accurate count of how many people actually showed up for the game.

I can honeslty say that I do not think there was an empty seat in the house Against Cincy.
