Why does every Charlotte 49er sport strive for the participation trophy

Most people just don’t have the masochistic tendencies to stick with an athletic department like Charlotte through thick and thin. These type of people don’t have the capability to root for a loser year in and year out and potentially go to their death bed without a single shred of joy, true joy of achieving something meaningful. So what do they do? They move on to something else, and usually that something else is successful. If that fake joy fills their hearts then so be it, who am I to care?

Do I think less of these type of people? To a certain extent I do, because I feel like if they truly cared they would not “jump off the boat” but at the same time who am I to call them out on the fact that they are more normal than I am? Normal people don’t enjoy pain and misery. It takes an abnormal person to be a true and true/bleed green and white (and gold and black according to the AD) Charlotte 49ers fan.

A la Cleveland Brown fans.

I should add that thankfully for me I do get joy from my other teams, the Panthers, the Giants of the San Francisco variety, the Hornets (hey 2 playoff appearances in 3 years!) and being a huge soccer fan, I love following the national teams of my natal home, Romania (qualified for EURO 2016) and of course the US of A.

If I only had the Niners though? Who knows, I may have given up on sports by now.

Fan is the short form of Fanatic.

fa·nat·ic

/fəˈnadik/

noun: fanatic; plural noun: fanatics

 1. a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal, especially for an extreme religious or political cause.

i only have the niners. i dont really care about the panthers, the hornets, i dont watch baseball or any other sports except for the ufc so i know the feeling of having all of your emotions invested in one team. im confident that we are on the upswing in basketball and football. im looking for a berth to the big dance this season and possibly making a bowl game as well. the other niner sports, i cant really speak to.

Now it makes sense why you are so optimistic. You have to be for your sanity. ;D

You are more confident than I. Whether we achieve all those things or not, I’ll still get season tickets to both sports and I’ll be there cheering and supporting.

i think both are achievable goals. i will feel more confident when we add a big man or two.

I had a ball watching our basketball team this year. I do not need to pick another team.
For a school of our size, it baffles me how we can be so bad at literally every sport we participate in. It is embarrassing that our highlights over the last few years is making the tourney in soccer and placing in golf. This comes from a 25K+ student school in a major metropolitan area with all major sports.

Will it ever change or is mediocrity going to be our status quo. I live in the Triangle and I really want to have something to brag out. I can’t use the rebuilding excuse forever.
you really need to wake up. Our program is awful. I joked in another thread, other CUSA schools probably say we should be kicked out.

basketball
2015 was 13/16
2012 was 11/14
2011 was 14/14
2009 was 12/14

football
2015 was 13/13

baseball
2016 is 9/12
2015 was 10/12
2014 was 11/12

Over the last 8 seasons for football, Basketball and baseball we average 7.7th out of 13.8. The only reason it’s even that high is due to 3 1st place baseball finishes in the a10 which was horrible at baseball.

Since joining CUSA for football, basketball and baseball we average 10.3 place out of 13.9.
Perhaps YOU should wake up before posting. Which of these stats show us as “close to dead last for almost a decade”? The fact that you are already using football (3 years in) to try and make your point is pretty bad.

We finished 13th in hoops this season? Huh?

I’m getting the following for hoops:

2016 7/14
2015 11/14
2014 8/16
2013 8/16
2012 11/14
2011 13/14 (first Major disaster)

Check out this from the “flagship”. Lots of words saying not much, and what it does say is a fat lie.

Typo on 2012, averages had correct information.

Counted from bottom on 2015 TOURNAMENT not SEASON and it left 2 teams off. Would impact averages minimally.

I still stand by that our overall program has been abysmal for a decade. Men’s soccer and out DII stint in baseball the bright spots.

The best thing that can happen is for our football team to be at least in the hunt for a bowl game the latter half of next season and our basketball team to at least challenge for the conference championship next year.

I’m just not convinced that having a successful athletic program is that important to chp. I’m also not convinced that Judy thinks Men’s basketball and football are more important than women’s basketball. I’m not being critical, I just believe that’s the way things are. The results are a lack of foresight regarding football’s potential and perhaps more resources/attention being given to women’s basketball than most of our peer schools give.

Both Judy and chp have made statements that make me think our athletic events are mainly for the students, with the alums and general public are not that important.

Well considering the Coaches Caravan includes the Women’s B-Ball Coach with the Men’s B-Ball Coach & F-Ball Coach, which won’t bring in additional people, but will make Price & Lambert go from a 1/2 cut of the $ to a 1/3 cut proves Judy doesn’t care as much about FB & Men’s B-Ball as Women’s B-Ball.

Let’s just take a look at what I now consider to be our most reasonable peer:

ODU

In addition to being a conference mate, they are also located in a fairly good sized urban market, though its a market with a much different demographic.

They have a strong local recruiting base, but not as strong as the Charlotte MSA. They also do not have the financial/corporate strength (potential sponsorship) that Charlotte has. And to be blunt, Norfolk is nowhere near as vibrant and modern as Charlotte is.

They have the TED center - the nicest hoops arena in CUSA. Seats just over 7k and has box seating and other amenities for the high roller set. It also doesn’t feature a track, and looks really good on TV.

They are serious about not sitting put now that they have achieved FBS membership. As discussed in shoutbox today, S B Ballard Construction Company has put together a bid to build them a fantastic, high end, expandable 25k stadium on the site of the current stadium. Story and pictures here: http://pilotonline.com/sports/college/old-dominion/football/new--seat-odu-stadium-could-open-for-season-developer/article_31cb5f25-bb3f-5bc8-b05e-610c0c6748a7.html

They have a much larger operating budget than we do. Though they are also heavily reliant on student fees, they have a larger season ticket base than we do in both revenue sports.

Why? Leadership. Vision. Not settling. What is this going to get them?

An AAC invite. Bank on it. If they build that stadium, they are nearly perfectly paired to be a travel partner for ECU in the AAC (2.5 hour bus ride).

What we should absolutely be doing is trying to match their growth (since we cant seem to bother with leading), and hope that any future AAC/realignment, leaves us in a very appealing divisional core with Marshall, ECU and ODU, hopefully as part of a very appealing AAC eastern division with UConn, Temple, USF and UCF. Short of some major realignment in college sports, that is probably our ceiling, but it is solid, and worth pursuing.

Failing to attain that is failing on the job, IMO. I’m getting really tired of the participation award level commitment from our athletic department. And they wonder why I wont increase my donations. (You can go ahead and email me my meager contributions CHP - and Ill send you back the pitiful track record of athletics over the last decade).

Time for new blood. We need a mindset change in the worst way.

If they give this the go by July

They’ll have leaped us.

Hey now, that image doesn’t have our lights!
