Winthrop: Fighting the good fight

Talks are beginning at the school just south of here about starting a football team.

Best of luck to them – a long, hard, but rewarding fight!

Their start up costs could probably be fairly low. District Three stadium is more than sufficient for Big South football and it is only a mile or two from campus I believe.

A couple million in upgrades would have it be one of the best stadiums in the Big South.

I hate to doubt another program’s potential to start football after so many doubted ours, but I just don’t see it happening. They average around 1700 in basketball, and a substantially larger percentage of their students and alumni are female. Only 33% of Winthrop’s 6,000 students are male. I know that women love football too, but I have a hard time believing they will have the student and alumni support to start a program. If their administration is set on it, their best bet is playing non-scholarship football in the Pioneer League.

I know a distinguished alumnus that can help them get it started.

I heard she has been working for football at Winthrop for 20 years.

It hurts me to read these comments. People said the same thing about us.

If Winthrop wants a piece of the pie, I hope they can find a way.

If Brevard College and Guilford Colkege can have a football team there is no reason Winthrop can’t. Same thing we said about ourselves. Good luck to them.

And if they get a team, I’ll bet they can beat Apps butt right out of the gate.

The only thing I can tell Winthrop is dreams do come true. (8/31)

$uck it naysayers!

It might only take 5 to 10 years to get it going at Winthrop.
