XU Postgame
This team was better than Mullins first when we still had Phil. Without him, I personally think we are worse.
I’d say the team with Phil was better than the 08-09 team, and couple of the other years that were down years under Lutz. Even without Jones, I’d say we’re still better than that first Mullins team, just because the A10 currently is somewhat stronger than the Sun Belt. So if you look at the season as a whole (almost over now), definitely better. But it’s not by much, and it’s not really worth arguing over, both were poor seasons.

On a different note, Green was very effective taking the ball to the basket last night, either drawing fouls or making layups (3-5 on 2 pt attempts and shot 8 ft’s) and got 5 assists. He also went 1-7 from the 3 pt line, with most of those shots being decent looks. This game is a great illustrator of his strengths and weaknesses. When he starts gunning from outside, it hurts our offense. When he drives to the basket, he creates easy baskets and scores points.

No, that year’s team sucks worse then that year’s team which sucks worse then this year’s team
The Niners weren’t on the radio on the drive home yesterday. WTF?

610 AM played the Bung Holes. Anyone driving would listen to FM, numb nuts, so 99.7 already had it covered.

1660 AM had a political talk show on the WI protests. I thought 1660 was for sports not politics.

We get the shaft for the Bung Holes & people skipping work in WI. Depression. Sets. In. On. Our. Irrelevance. :’(
This is not the 1st time this has happened. I know the Temple game was not on radio anywhere. Who knows how many more of our games were not even on local radio. Aren’t we paying to have our games broadcast? I can get Crap State b-ball games in Charlotte on AM and FM but not the 49ers.

No, Lutz sucks. His team was definitely the suckiest of the sucks. Oh, and Phil sucked for three years, but was going to take us dancing his final season.

That’s an extreme statement, first time I’ve seen someone say that.

I’m also surprised you think Jones would take us dancing his final season, but sucked prior to that. I mean, he was clearly improved, but not that improved.

It was nice to see the Niners on TV regardless of the loss.

From Shannon Russell’s blog:

PREGAME: Just learned that Charlotte point guard Jamar “Deuce” Briscoe is not playing tonight because of a sore/strained back. Apparently he took a knee to the back yesterday in practice. His status was a game-time decision. His absence leaves the the 49ers with seven scholarship players.

BTW, another poor game offensively by Holloway, though he did have 8 assists. Lack of points from him didn’t hurt the X-Men this time. Interesting comments from our coach:

“They have great balance throughout the starting five,’’ Charlotte coach Alan Major said. “Every great team I’ve been around has great balance.’’ Major worked for Thad Matta at Xavier, when the Musketeers came within a possession or two of beating Duke in an Elite Eight game in 2004.

Major likened Holloway to Xavier’s quarterback. Then he went down the lineup. “Mark (Lyons) is the running back, Dante (Jackson) is the slot receiver, (Jamel) McLean is the tight end, (Kenny) Frease is the other tight end.

“When you have the other guys chipping in, Donovan McNabb can dish out eight assists.’’

FWIW, the Big O didn’t sent anyone to cover game as this morning’s post-game piece was written by a freelance reporter.

Wonder how many of the constant whinners and snivelers on this board have purchased an FSL?

Coaches show is rocking tonight. Hate they don’t save the front seats for Niner fans.

610/1660 AM didn’t air our game last night.

CBS CS hardly ever shows our games or allows it to be shown.

When is the AD going to get some balls & sue CBS CS & 610/1660 AM for breach of contract for not broadcasting what we signed a contract to broadcast?

Have we used up all our excuses for sucking this year,or are we going to start next year with “we’re so young, and have so many new players,we can’t be expected to be very good”

I’m sure i’ll get all the haters here, but Major hasn’t shown me anything special yet.Hopefully next year.

If he can’t get the team at least fired up enough to show some preide on saturday and avoid that indignity i’ll be very sad ???

Actually not really, we’ve been through this before.

Close…but I think this team is worse. In fact, I’d say its the worst since 1985-86 (Mullins 1st season).
The way we were playing without Spears, but with Phil I thought we would be middle of the pack A10. I never thought at any point of the 08-09 season that we would be anywhere close to a .500 team.
That 08-09 team was 9 to 10 scholarship players deep, so you would expect more out of that team than one with just 8 players(and no true point guard), on top of that the 08-09 team was over .500 for a whopping two days, then we lost our 2nd game to ODU. Until Phil left this was a solid middle of the pack A10 team(I mean GW has 9 conference wins!!!). Don’t forget, before that season started we had high expectations after the 2008 A10 Tourney performance and making the NIT.
I’m really trying to avoid more Major vs Lutz debate. But if you’re going to say that team was 8-9 deep, you have to say the same for this year’s squad. Assuming Briscoe can play Sat, we’ll be 8 deep.

As far as expectations, I’d have to say the expectations for this season were much higher than for the 08-09 season. In 08-09 we lost our leading scorer of 19 ppg. This year we had our top 3 scorers all returning.

All sarcasm. Was joking with SF. Both teams pretty much sucked.

Everybody seems to be thinking our freshmen are going to turn things around. The “we’re so young…” arguement will be in vogue next year unless our juniors and sr.s step up. I thought last years newcomers were the best group we have had in a few years. Its really disappointing how this team has gone down over the course of the year.

its not like we are just going to have freshmen. hypothetically, if braswell or kj dont leave, we still have deuce, derrio, braswell, kj returning. we dont lose much. we have no excuses.

The problem is that these guys we have don’t seem to be making much progress, either as a team or as individuals. March is the time to have put it togather, and we are 1-11 as of late. We should be much better than we are now.

honestly, mid-season we seemed to be playing a lot better even when we would lose…
But it got to the point where the guys gave up and called it season.

I have recieved some explanation on our radio contract. It was not a breach of contract. We had 4 games this season that were not on normal local radio. Three of those games were on TV of some sort. The only game with no TV or radio was Davidson. That was the best deal out there for our program.

There was a potential deal with an FM station in Charlotte, but they would have only broadcast as few as 6 games this year.

“That was the best deal out there for our program”

This is another topic for another day but this type of statement is just frustrating on so many levels. I understand our limitations and have also talked to the people involved with negotiating for us but at some point it has to change.
