Your least favorite chant this season?

I was lucky enough to attend this year’s Army Navy game in Philadelphia. During the third quarter, the Army band struck Gary the pedophile Glitter’s song, “Rock and Roll Part One.” You know, the song with the ‘you suck’ chant. And the Army cadets, the future heroes and leaders of our country gleefuly shouted in unison “YOU SUCK!” to the Navey Midshipmen. Perhaps our students aren’t so classless.
Why?
1. “B.S.” - I’m a hypocrite cause I did it as a student in my day, but on TV and from the other side of the arena, it looks so ridiculously juvenile. Actually, just saying “B.S.” (abbreviated) would be worlds better.

 2. “You suck” - because it sounds retarded coming from our fans when we’re losing. And when we’re winning, if you think about it, it just demeans our effort too.

 3. Both of them are unoriginal and kinda mindless. I actually like that story about the Duke fans chanting “We respectfully disagree”. That’s funny. So are nursery rhymes, heckling an opposing player with a bad hairstyle/attitude/etc, and nearly anything else creative.

I think the student section is at its best when they coordinate on the fly chants like you guys really started doing after that game @ Providence Day, and when we hammered Davidson a couple years ago (oh how long ago that seems). “This is our house” is Quality (yes, capital Q).

No, it’s still pretty much classless.

very well said

The D-D-D…Defense! chant was just a waist of breath, because we weren’t going to play any anyway.

i freakin hate the ‘you cant do that’ chant.

the best chant our school ever had, they put the kabash on it…

U! …brass band

N! …more band

C! …band

C! …band

U N C C …roll niners roll

it would wear out the male cheerleader trying to spell UNCC on the ground

I think “bullshit” is acceptable when it is really bullshit. These A10 refs ask for it all the time. Considering how bad they are, I think we are rather reserved on the use of that chant. If we did it all the time, I could understand the argument for being juvenile, but we dont so I “respectfully disagree.”

As for “you suck,” I think it is dumb to just yell it out. I only like it when we do it during the spelling out of N-I-N-E-R-S when everyone would point and say “you suck” where those hyphens are. It grew on me. I don’t really care about the actual words “you suck.” Some people take it a lot more offensively than others, but I personally don’t mind it at all. But I have realized that I would be happy if we just said anything at all and pointed like the old days. I like “you suck” but if we said “you stink,” I would be just as happy.

Would anybody object to “duh-duh duh-duhhh duh-duh N… point ‘YOU STINK’ ?”

While the “you suck!” chant is classless, it also does not make sense.

Usually, the song goes, “Hey!” and then is typically followed by, “you suck!”…as in “Hey! You suck!”

However, we spell out “N-I-N-E-R-S!”, so “you suck!” doesn’t fit.

“N! you suck! I! you suck!..” doesn’t quite work so well, in my opinion. Neither would “you stink!” or “you smell!” or even “we suck!”

And its been mentioned before, but “bullshit” just makes us look classless and I personally would not want my children to hear it if I brought my family to a game. It is one thing if a few students occasionally curse, but an entire student section…

Eh. Weak argument. We are both rooting for ourselves and against them in one chant. That is why there is pointing. If we didn’t point, it wouldnt make sense, but we do so everyone knows who we are talking about.

We have different stances and views on class and language so this kinda isn't debatable; but basically, I disagree with both your arguments.

OK bust, you don’t think several hundred students yelling BULLLSHIT! at the top of their lungs in a public environment isnt classless? Man you would fit in well at Maryland…

And the “you suck” chant. Flat out stupid until WE dont suck anymore. Even if we were undefeated and blew everyone out, its still just dumb and unoriginal.

No, I don't. If we yelled it out when it wasn't actually bullshit, that would be dumb, but if it is a bullshit call, then it is what it is and I don't see why we can't express our anger. Whether we boo or everyone yells random stuff or we yell "bullshit" in unison, the message conveyed is still the same: we think it was a bad call.

If you would rather yell something out that doesn’t inlude a “bad word,” that’s fine by me, but I personally don’t care about “bad words.” I think the whole notion of “bad words” (barring racial slurs) is absurd. So I cannot share your stance on the chant. If the people at Maryland yell “bullshit” or whatever, then I say more power to 'em.

If us sucking means we shouldn't shout anything about the other team, then half of what was said this year shouldn't have been said either. But the fact remains that even though we sucked this year, we still did those chants, and even Northern Colorado(RPI 336) fans probably do them as well, so saying we suck isn't a viable argument for not doing a chant.

I agree that simply saying “you suck” is dumb. I think it is better if it is in some kinda of chant, but if you take issue with the words used, then I think we should just change them, not cut the whole thing out. I dont care what it is, if it fits in between the letters while we are spelling out N-I-N-E-R-S and makes sense, Ill go for it. I just miss that chant.

Personally I dont like the You Suck chant, I’d rather say go green or something.

But the BULLSHIT chant… thats another story. Were talking little kids. Parents dont want their little kids hearing that.

Haha ok bust, I like you a lot man, but you have some seriously flawed logic.

Here is what you’re saying… You dont think it’s bad to yell out what is socially considered “bad words.” Therefore, it’s OK for you to yell bullshit at the top of your lungs because, to you, it’s acceptable.

Alright, what if, in my mind, random violence was acceptable. And I come and blindside the crap out of you with my strongest punch and put you in the hospital for a month. Ok you would be pretty pissed right? That was messed up of me to do right? Well wait, its ok to me, so therefore it was an ok thing for me to do. If I dont have a problem with it, then who cares? Right?

See, just because you think it’s OK to yell obscenities in Halton Arena, doesn’t make it OK.

Like I said, I like you Will, youre the man, but you just have to realize that whether or not the idea of “bad words” is dumb, it is still not an appropriate thing to yell.

But the BULLSHIT chant.. thats another story. Were talking little kids. Parents dont want their little kids hearing that.
If its a little kid then they shouldn't even know what the word means and probably wont even understand what we are saying. If the kid is old enough to know what the word means or what we are saying, then they obviously have heard it before and know better than to use the word because they heard it at a basketball game. Furthermore, if they have already heard the word and know what it is, then they are not hearing anything knew and hearing it is doing them no harm.

I understand this. It’s about respect. You have to respect peoples rights. But shouting “bullshit” out at a basketball game isn’t exactly putting someone in the hospital. If someone has a problem with it that bad, they probably have worse problems. I just don’t think hearing “bullshit” once (or several times if the refs are having a really bad night) is going to nor should it hurt anyone that bad.
I understand this. It’s about respect. You have to respect peoples rights…
Their rights? Ohh like their right to be able to go out in public with their families and not have to listen to obscenities being shouted.

Yeah you’re right, it’s about respect, which is EXACTLY why we shouldnt be yelling bullllshit at games.

It is about how far do you go to respect peoples rights tho. You gotta draw the line somewhere. Take gay men kissing for example. Id say more people care about this than obscenities and more passionatley. Some people are so offended by this they will beat you up if they see you kiss another dude. Should gay people not kiss each other in public because other people have a problem with it? These people feel they have the right to not see gay people kiss, but I don’t think gay people should have to respect that.

Likewise, some people feel they should be able to go around and not hear obsceneties. I don’t disagree with this, but if the refs make a bad call and I want to give them a piece of my mind, I think these people should be able to deal with it. These people can’t go around expecting to be able to hide from the real world all the time, and I don’t think I should have to curtail my behavior all the time so that they can stay in their bubble.
