By saying that you wouldn't use that language when talking to your grandparents, you are admitting that it is unacceptable.
No, I am saying that I don't want to have that discussion with my grandparents. In their day, words like crap and stuff we unacceptable and they said stuff like "dang," "darn," "gosh," and "golly." Although they feel this language is unacceptable, if we actually had a discussion on it, I'm sure they would change their tune. (Actually all my grandparents are deceased and I never knew any of them that well so I am making assumptions on their opinions.) But old people can be stubborn and stuff, and although they are wrong, I wouldnt want to have to have a discussion and try and get them to change their mind.
The thing is, these words are only viewed as bad because we keep up this taboo. What is âshit?â Itâs not like it is anything crazy. It just means poop. What is it about the word âshitâ that makes it so much worse than âpoopâ? The idea that we are not supposed to say it. If these words are so bad, it seems like we would want to get rid of whats bad. How can we do that? By using them and not making a big deal about it. If saying âI just took a poop,â âI just took a crap,â and âI just took a shit,â which all literally mean the same thing, were viewed as such, there would be no issue whatsoever.
So in actuallity, by maintaining this taboo on these words which you view as bad, you are giving them their power. If you wish to keep them as bad words, then maintaining this taboo would be in your interest but you would then be maintaining bad; but if you wanted to solve the problem, you wouldnât make a big deal about it.
I donât exactly want to have to have that discussion with my grandparents. Atleast I donât think I would.
How is it all of the sudden OK, when it's 300 students yelling it?
Well first and foremost, I view it as a special occasion. Most people don't just walk around screaming cuss words all the time. But if you get kicked in the nuts, lose your wallet, or whatever, it doesn't seem to matter as much to people. Basketball is a battle. You know this as well as I. Money for our school, pride, and the greatness that is college basketball lay in the balance. If these refs screw that up for us, I feel that it is that kind of situation and I want to make sure they know how I feel so that they may try to correct their behavior.
But also, since it is a large arena, we donât have to worry about having to have the discussion I mentioned before. People will just hear it and move on with their lives. Further still, due to the size of the arena, half the time people canât make it out. Dax himself, a young person with (probably) good hearing has stated several times he hasnât understood what we chant sometimes. Given, bullshit is more of a standard chant, but Iâm still fairly sure many people donât know what we are saying or may not even pay attention to us. Then, if we are worried about little kids, I think they would have an even harder time understanding what we are saying since their language capabilities are not as honed as an older personâs. And if they do somehow recognize what we have said, then they obviously know what the word is and should know not to use it.
Btw bust, while I strongly disagree with you on this particular topic, I am enjoying the debate.
Great. Same here. Sorry about the long post hah.
