2009/10 Depth Chart

pg - Harris / Green / Parks / Church
sg - Bowden / Green / Andersen
sf - Wilderness / Dewhurst / Coleman / Barnett / Sirin
pf - Spears / Sherrill / Barnett / Sirin
c - Braswell / Jones

Some notes:

Gotta love that depth at point guard! WOOHOO!! After a year with only one pg, this will be a refreshing change. Dijuan will be much more rested at the ends of games, and he will be able to go back to his agressive style on D.

I don’t see where Coleman will get minutes this year. He’s obviously much better suited for the three than two, and he’s got Anjuan and Dew ahead of him there. Same goes for Barnett. But this means we have great depth, which is awesome.

I think Jones will start over Braswell for the first few games, but then we will see Braswell as our starting center for the rest of the season.

Speaking of Braswell, I always see him listed as pf, but I don’t think he will see many, if any, minutes anywhere other than center, for a few reasons. First of all he is almost 6’9. Second of all, since he doesn’t have much of a jumper, almost all of his offense comes from post moves under the basket. And third, he spent almost his entire high school career playing the five.

IF (and that’s a big if) everyone stays healthy, we will do some serious damage. That’s an impressive looking roster.

What’s everyone else think?

On paper it is impressive (and should be) but I want to see them in action first. Remember we had that supposed top 13 recruiting class a few years ago and that didn’t turn out well. I am optimistic that this team is going to be good, possibly damn impressive but I can wait until the fall.

I am very excited about our incoming players. With that in mind I want to see some improvement from Anjuan and Phil:

Wilderness: Develop a jump shot, become a better ft shooter
Jones: Get better at catching passes and dribbling, become more agressive

These changes could make the difference between an NCAA team and an NIT team. Depth is good, very good, but tallent is better.

Looks good to me! I think we have the talent to be a very good basketball team, and our depth is great. Good talent down low, good talent at the 1 and 2. I hope the players gel.

Coleman could see more minutes at the beginning of the season at the 3 because i don’t see them thrusting dewberry into the lineup. I see them trying to work him in to get in used to game speed again. But he will definitely surpass Coleman eventually for the backup spot.

We should be able to use Ian and Coleman as instant offense type guys this year. Green can shoot but is small for the 2 but so was Lee and Demon.

We need some dependable scoring. I think we can count in Spears. I know the coaching staff is really high on Bowden’s shooting but is a question mark because of the knee. Braswell has promise. Anjuan for maybe 10 per game. Jones for 8. We’ll see.

Spears scoring vs A-10 competition:
URI: 4
UMass: 12
Duquesne: 0 (in 24 minutes)

URI: 12
SLU: 10
UMass: 8

7.66 average

Not to be a killjoy, but his stats haven’t exactly been explosive vs the A10. I know that people have seen him play and think he’s a monster and all but I would be surprised, and very happy, if he puts up more than 15 a night. I don’t think that we’ll have a super scorer this year, but Xavier and Dayton were both very good last year and nobody scored more than 14 ppg on either team.
Hopefully our defense will be good and our offense will be consistent. I am also hoping that someone does take on the role of go to guy for when games come down to the wire. The field is wide open.

Spears was wayy under-utilized in the BC offense. He will be one of the main scorers for us. The guy can play, trust me.

He played a decent amount of minutes. Of course, I haven’t seen film of him playing at BC, and I never really liked BC so I didn’t watch them. So I’m guessing you mean they didn’t pass to him much or incorporate him in plays?

Bingo. It’s not about minutes. You can play 40 min per game and still not be utilized as a part of the offense.

He (spears) will be one of the main scorers for us. The guy can play, trust me.

Not saying I disagree… But, we’ll come back to this quote in March.

Yep and we’ll see that Scotty was 100% right.

Harris/Green/Parks

Bowden(? Injury)/Ian/Coleman

Wilderness/Coleman/Sirin/Dewhurst(? Injury)/

Spears/Sherrill/Barnett/Sirin

Jones/Braswell

Sirin, Dewhurst, and Bowden are the X Factors because of Sirin’s inexperience playing in the States and Dew and Bowden’s injuries.

If Sirin catches on then he has the potential to play a lot more minutes.

Also, will be interesting to see how much Barnett will improve from freshman year to sophomore year.

Sherill is very raw and we shouldn’t expect that much from him besides being athletic and a defensive presence. Think, less athletic freshman in the mold of Coley.

The four spot is the most unknown because Spears will not be able to run with the team for 40 minutes.

But, we should have MAJOR balance this year. Throw it down low to Braswell, Spears, Jones and then they can score or kick it out to NUMEROUS shooters.

I hope that’s going to be our plan, work inside, THEN out. No reason we shouldn’t do that this year.

QFT. And we all know how Lutz loves to kick it inside and bang it down low, uh, ok, sorry.

I’m with Shaggy.I only saw Spears play once but I think that convinced me,plus his attitude last year on the bench was excellent.1 thing I think people will see is how smart a player he is.If i’m proven wrong I expect to be called out for my rare burst of optimism.

Bowden(? Injury)/Ian/Coleman

Our 2 spot is the X factor imo.

If Bowden lives up to his hype, we are a tourney team. Looks like we have def upgraded our inside game and our PG depth is resolved, now depends upon our shooters and SG / SF play.

SG–
We gotta have people to knock down the open 3. I hope Ian and Bowden are working their @$$ off. With Braswell/Spears/Jones on the inside… Ian and Bowden should be able to get a lot of good looks.

SF–
I hope this is Wilderness’ year. Him and Dew need to just slash slash slash AND FINISH… and knock down their free throws when they get fouled on every drive.

This years seems to be the first in a while that we have true position players that don’t need to play outside their normal position. We have PG… shooters… slashers… and post/big men. I just pray the type offense Bobby runs is going to allow each person on the floor to utilize their stregnths.

sg - Bowden / Green / Andersen

If this turns out correct — and no job should be safe after losing 20 games — that would mean that our top returning scorer was relegated to 3rd-string as a senior.

Anyone think...

Harris
Bowden
Andersen/Green/Sirin
Spears
Braswell

…might be a lineup during a game??? I think we’ll see alot of this.

Harris
Bowden
Ian
Green
Sirin
… whatta line-up for a down by 3 with 5 seconds left situation. (Jones did shoot 50% from 3 last year though…lol.)

^%#^#&#^%^&#& I’m EXCITED!!!

Hey anything can happen. It happen to Paulus at Duke (well not third string but you get my point). If Anderson can’t learn to drop the shot fast, like so many before him, then he doesn’t deserve to start. Third string may be a little harsh but if Green turns out to be better than expected and can drop the 3 then I have no problem with relegating Anderson to the bench!
