2011 Men's Hoops Coaching Carousel

Who told you that, I thought we went after the X guy and the Texas guy also… now if we “officially” offered and all that stuff who knows, but saying we got our second choice seems a little far fetched.

My understanding is that Hopkins was our first choice and then we were interested in a handful of younger assistants, interviewed all of them and offered Major. No one knows if we offered anyone else, at least not that I am aware of.

This.

The tail end of Major’s background is concerning to me. Perhaps someone can counter those concerns without calling me an idiot.

After Greg Oden left OSU, he called associate head coach John Groce a “genius” and called coach Major by the wrong name (included an ‘S’ in there). You can probably easily write that off as senility setting in on Oden, but it was a bit odd. We all had fun when a Clemson announcer botched Dewhurst’s name - now imagine a former player mispronouncing Lutz or calling Benny Moss ‘Lenny Moss’.

But whatever. Not a big deal. What happened next was what raised eyebrows for me. John Groce left as associate head coach to take a job in the Mid-American Conference.

So Major gets promoted to associate head coach, right? Wrong.

OSU immediately hires Jeff Boals as their new ‘big man coach’, effectively stripping Major of his role on the staff. Why? Major did remain on the staff but as a redundant coach and in need of a change of scenery. Which raises questions in my mind on what exactly transpired during his final seasons at Ohio State.

So if I argued that Coach Major was less than highly regarded among his players and peers than, say, a Coach Lambert - what would be a good counter-argument on Major’s behalf?

Since this seems to be confusing, it means an assistant from a major program which was the stated focus from the get go (including Hopkins). Carry on with the vivesection.

So I have some questions about this too while we are here, this is the website I’m getting my info from,
http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=87806&SPID=10421&DB_OEM_ID=17300&Q_SEASON=2006

It’s the offical site of the buckeyes, so why isn’t Groce on that list? Oden played his one year in the 06-07 season… then I see this…

http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=87806&SPID=10421&DB_OEM_ID=17300&Q_SEASON=2009

No Major. it’s kind of confusing, maybe they took the names off the coaches that left? It also doesn’t say what each coaches title is other than assistant.

Survivor can you give us a link that shows Major wasn’t the big man coach in 2009-2010?

Nope. I can only show you that Jeff Boals was added to Ohio State to develop their post players.

It shouldn’t be that hard to find. Boals worked primarily as the post player developer at all his coaching stops.

Did you try his Ohio State bio?

It says he was responsible for the big men at Akron.

While he probably did work with tOSU’s big men, there’s nothing in that bio that says he was brought in to take Major’s job, just says what he did for Akron.

“A native of Magnolia, Ohio, Boals (pronounced BOWLS) spent three seasons as a member of the Akron basketball staff, his final as the associate head coach. He served as the program’s recruiting coordinator and was responsible for the development of the team’s post players.”

Sounds like a solid hire to have on staff, but it isn’t necessarily an indictment on Major’s abilty/inability to coach. If he wasn’t a good asst coach, I doubt Matta would have kept him on staff.

It also says he coached post guys and perimeter guys at Robert Morris. Since it’s in his bio we should assume he coaches both at OSU and is probably the only assistant Matta needs.

I still believe that Boals was brought on to coach OSU’s big men with the anticipation of not hanging onto Major. And I honestly think Major would have gone directly to Robert Morris in the NEC in May had we not hired him in April. Basically, I think Major’s background is a bit on the modest side.

We’re talking about Ohio State here. Why wait a year to fire a coach? Why not do it right away and bring in basically any assistant you want?

Looks like NC State is going to hire this guy.

Lamar has hired former Texas Tech coach Pat Knight as its next head coach.

the comedy that was the state search is over :frowning: makes me sad.

now onto the comedy that is state fans either 1) pissing all over the hire or 2) thinking Gottfried is the savior

NC State could have done much worse but the guy’s resume looks a lot like Herb’s though.

How they heck did Fairfield pull a princton guy coaching at his almamater. Looks like he would have waited for a much better job and
