Postandcourier.com: Earl Grant named College of Charleston coach
Anyone care to speculate why no body seems to want Lutz as a head coach? Seems like he wasn’t even CofC’s second choice.
Because nobody wants this on the cover of their media guide.
Honest question - does a hiring AD call the former AD to see how he was? If that is the case Bobby isn’t going anywhere because Judy is going to sink him everytime. She spent half the final coaches show still blaming him for our current situation.

Bobby has also worked at Iowa State and NC State since he left here. Seems he could
get good references from them.

Would be like any other job reference? I thought a former employer could only give dates of employment and couldn’t bad mouth a former employee, etc. I know coaches are more public, etc, but it would seem the same rules would apply.

There was a report about how there was a big push to hire a minority for the CofC job because the AD or chancellor (can’t remember which one) is a believer in toting the South and its heritage to the point of embarrassment to the school. Bobby, last I checked, isn’t a minority.
The only problem for Lutz at Charleston is that sources have told CBSSports.com that ]McConnell is facing internal and external pressure to hire a minority to replace Doug Wojcik, who was fired for cause earlier this month after multiple investigations uncovered allegations of verbal and physical assaults on players and staffers. McConnell was appointed the 22nd president of Charleston last March in a move that drew heavy criticism from students, faculty and the NAACP -- mostly because of his record of promoting Confederate history. As detailed previously at InsideHigherEd.com McConnell once owned a shop that sold memorabilia of the South's rebellion is a supporter of flying the Confederate flag on the statehouse grounds, and has been photographed dressed as a Confederate general All of this -- combined with how the school's trustees reportedly ignored its own search committee, which did not recommend McConnell for president -- led to protests on campus and an unfavorable spotlight on the school, and the thought, sources told CBSSports.com, is that McConnell could alleviate some of the criticism by hiring a black basketball coach to replace the white coach he just fired.Grant, it should be noted, is African-American.

I do not want to hijack the thread…but why a standing O? I went to school in the A10 days so I never saw the consistent winning seasons…so I guess I don’t have that super love for him. I view him as a good coach who benefited from a strong conference and then struggled in a new league. Again, I want to stress I don’t want to argue and hijack this thread. I get he was here a long time, but he won less than 60% of his games.
I do hope he gets the job and I think it would be fun for him to come here. Could be some closure for fans…unless he wins. Then all hell would break out. His style was always fun to watch. Much more entertaining than our current regime. However, the seasons still seem to turn out the same.
Good luck Bobby!
Alum, winningest coach of all time, had us Dance a bunch, the Bobby Lutz invitational, he had us winning when we didn’t have the better five players on the floor and was a great guy who loved this school.
His departure was probably necessary, but he will always be worthy of a standing ovation anytime he comes to Halton.
Exactly!

Not true. Apparently, at the end he was said to be their FIRST choice (atleast if you believe Garry Parrish-CBS Sportsline). However, according to Parrish, the school President was under major pressure from several groups, including the NAACP to hire a minority coach (Grant is black) after he was hired over a committees recommendation himself (another African American candidate). Tough break for Bobby.
Edit: Didn’t see CSF’s post before mine.

healthiest of situations.
FWIW, Anthony Johnson was the FIRST first choice and that made sense given his history with CofC. But as with this whole affair, the search committee hadn’t done it’s homework. You don’t replace a coach who’s been fired due to mistreatment of players, staff, etc., with a guy who has been arrested in a domestic dispute.
Anyway, Grant’s hiring has logic - Charleston native who has been an assistant at The Citadel, Winthrop, and Clemson, so he knows the Palmetto State.
