As C-USA begins it’s 24th season of men’s college basketball this week, here are the respective openers.
Tuesday, November 6th
Chattanooga @ CHARLOTTE
LA Tech @ Wichita State
Lees-McRae (D-II) @ Middle Tennessee
Angelo State (D-II) @ North Texas
Navy @ ODU
St. Leo (D-II) @ Rice
Southeastern Baptist* @ Southern Miss
*NOTE: Southeastern Baptist College (Laurel, MS) has revived it’s men’s basketball program after nearly a 30 year hiatus and SBC athletics are looking to join either the Association of Christian College Athletics or the National Christian College Association
Media markets do not mean what they used to for conference affiliation, but being in BFE means you cannot get real teams to come to your campus. Something to think about if we start to realign geographically.
Actually has nothing to do with getting “real teams” to come to Hattiesburg. Just Doc Sadler continuing the USM “cupcake” tradition started by Larry Eustachy. In addition to SBC, Southern Miss will play NAIA William Carey (Hattiesburg, MS), D-III Millsaps (Jackson, MS), and NAIA Rust (Holly Springs, MS).
FWIW, heralded WKU frosh Charles Bassey had 11 pts, 12 rebs, 2 blocks and 2 steals in his college debut vs Washington. On the negative side, only 1-4 on FTs and fouled out in 28 minutes of action.
In addition to LA Tech’s opening day win over Wichita State and the Niners comeback over OK State, C-USA can add the following victories over major conference opponents in today’s action:
FAU 80
UCF 79
Southern Miss 74
SMU 64
FAU win particularly surprising since UCF the preseason pick to win the AAC.
