2019-20 MBB Opponents and Schedule

We’ll we pay Dooley 900k+ and the checks keep cashing enough we added another staff position a month ago hiring a guy away from one of the richest high schools in the world I’d guess if JFK went there. I get your point though. I’m kind of amazed this quality ofcoaches are at ECU honestly. I doubt we pay them that well relative what they were making or could probably find elsewhere so it doesn’t seem like it’s about the money. I think clearly Dooley believes in ECU’s ability to win to comeback after being fired, (that’s unprecedented) when he was interviewing for better jobs and these guys must believe in Dooley.

I think history suggests it’s easy as hell to bet against them until they get on the court and prove that you shouldn’t. They’ve never done that.

In 55ish years, ECU has won 20+ games in a season one time, and that was with 4 non-D1 teams and a run in the CBI or CIT or whatever. That includes 5 years of Dooley. So Dooley makes about about 10% of your sample and he’s not done it.

Like I said, no one will give respect until the Pirates accomplish something that deserves it. Until then, it’s hard understand why anyone wouldn’t bet against them.

Dooley was hired at 29 years old, and was fired with a winning record. If anything his history at ECU is positive given the overall history and the resources at the time. and after 20+ years later and working 11 at Kansas I think he’s clearly better now than then would you not agree?

Even then he had one top #97 RPI team that beat a top 15 St Joe’s and deserved an NIT bid under the old format. He had some really bad injury luck as well multiple season. J. Kerner who played in the NBA was injured that year or he probably wins the CAA, I think we were leading at the time.

His last year Evladas Jocy’s was the biggest recruit we ever had missed a bunch of games and give the new AD the excuse to fire him at 13-14 record and with David West committed. His first stint was a lot of the reason is why I wanted him back. It certainly wasn’t negative given our resources at the time.

I don’t think you do. My point is that we know ECU has been losing money for years, and your AD just announced that because you will continue to lose money your football and basketball teams are going to have to pick up some guarantee games. We know that means displacing likely wins against the likes of Mt Olive and Towson with losses against P5 programs looking for a victim. Your ticket sales and contributions have tanked with the past losses, so this is not a recipe for turning things around. ECU is stuck between a rock and a hard place. If Dooley and Houston do not win–both big and soon–then you are toast.

Again - see above as to why people will bet against you until you show them otherwise. Touting a guy that was 23-31 his last two seasons at ECU before being fired is a good example of why it will happen until you prove otherwise.

One could easily argue Dooley’s early “success” of 17-11 and 17-10 were as much a reflection of Eddie Payne’s “success” his last two seasons (15-12 and 18-11) prior to Dooley’s arrival as anything else. Similarly, he didn’t have to build anything from scratch at FGCU, as he stepped in following a Sweet Sixteen and a 26-11 record in Andy Enfield’s final season.

If he goes out and wins 20+ games a few seasons in a row, then everyone will stop betting against you. He hasn’t done that yet, so don’t expect the tune to change before then.

When we skull drag you in minges will you show your face and shake my hand? I’ll send you my seat location

We’ll I honestly don’t mind playing guarantee games especially in basketball. We need to upgrade the OOC and the competitive games we played at Duke and UNC were some of the most talked about games I think we have ever played. The AAC has rules on who we can schedule that they would have to sign off on I’m pretty sure. Also we haven’t played a D2 in years, they got rules against that as well thankfully all the D2 nonsense can’t happen anymore. Until we have to fire coaches because we can’t pay them that’s secondary to what they are actually doing. It seems to be affecting little to nothing with the quality of coaches that are coming here. The new TV deal will help offset a lot of the issues as well.

You could also say Dooley was some of the biggest part of Eddie Payne’s success as the top assistant. What did Eddie Payne do without him? Look at his record since and Dooley’s trajectory to Kansas on pure coaching talent. It’s not like he was good ol boyed in. At FGCU he took over a good team but he recruited a top 150 player from NC like Rayjon Tucker who’s going to be in the NBA to the ASun and got NBA player Brandon Goodwin there. Hard to say he didn’t do things with his own players either with 2 NCAA’s and 2 NIT’s in 5 years.

Again Dooley was 33 when fired and he had future National player of the year David West committed. He also beat out Kentucky and others for Jocys who was a top 40 recruit nationally that year and the best player. He missed 9 games of the 27 we played that last year and we were 13-14. Can you not see any raw deal there or poor injury luck between losing him and Kerner to injury?

Are you going to show your face when we skull drag you at home? Yes or no.

And I believe that @NotSoNewNiner’s reference to Andy Enfield is interesting and instructive. He went 21-15 in conference at FGCU before moving up and going 44-64 in his current job. Winning in the A-Sun does not necessarily mean anything about how a coach will do in a tougher conference. In fact, Dooley may have a chance to hire Enfield on his staff after this season.

…but Dooley’s already been at ECU as a 30 year old though and recruited big time players had a winning record here when we had CAA resources and some of the lowest funded basketball in the nation at the time. I mean really we hired a 29 year old. I’m not worried about the funding or him now.

I don’t see that as the same things at all to a guy that was a head coach for 2 years and basically caught a lighting in a bottle . Dooley put in many years since ECU proving himself as well as improving I would expect and he wasn’t even bad here at 30 years old especially relative to what he had to work with then and our history. Besides he’s clearly got a lot more help now as well.

JFK graduated from Choate Rosemary Hall, a boarding prep school. If you read the list of their alumni, there are many politicians, diplomats, actors/actresses, and other accomplished Americans.

There are no college or professional basketball players listed.

ECU needs to play every non-conference basketball game against opponents within a 250 mile radius, unless they’re playing in a tournament where their expenses are paid. That will limit what they pay to travel and they should draw better at home.

They could slash men’s soccer, but they eliminated that 10+ years ago.

OK, I have lost my enthusiasm for this topic. Let’s see if this will work for you.

ECU has never been successful in basketball, and the secret to becoming successful is hiring Dooley. Other schools that wanted to win did not know this was the secret and therefore did not hire him. ECU knew the secret, but did not want to win until now so they employed Lebo rather than bringing Dooley in, even though it was Dooley’s dream to live in Greenville again. Now, ECU wants to win, brought in Dooley, and Minges will be packed with Pirates.

Okay was just confused cause you know that’s like a football team & he’s like on a basketball staff. Anyway I guess maybe player personnel type skills can translate across sports.

This said he interviewed for 5 jobs in the previous 2 years including Rhode Island, Saint Louis, and New Mexico. It’s not like this guy was without good options. He interviewed for the Rhode Island job at the same time he did ours and we paid him 200k more a year. He could have had that job coming off a top 25 year if he wanted it.

Also FGCU had a stacked team with a former All Big East Rookie at Marquette coming in and two other players returning that grad transfered to VCU and Miami after he left. He clearly didn’t have to be here and left one of the most desirable areas in the country live to move back to Greenville.

That is what I said. Dooley is the guy that thinks Greenville, NC is a garden spot and he has been waiting for ECU to want him back. He turned down many great opportunities in the hope that one day you would come calling. The fact that he was able to parlay his dream job into paying him more money that the others is icing on the cake. Let’s face it, hoops success in Pirateland is pretty much defined as better than Lebo, so he really cannot fail. WIth UCONN still playing in the AAC I guess you are going to have to settle for an at-large bid this year. Good luck in the NCAA Tournament.

I bet you had no problem writing word count papers in college.

I know you are joking but Rhode Island paid less and got a coach with a fraction of his resume. He’s not a secret in the coaching world and ECU has tried to get him back long before now. A little known fact is he agreed to come back in 2010 before Lebo was hired and a press conference was even called before the deal fell through. It’s clearly something he’s long considered.

Rhode Island does not have a Physicians Group. They cannot be expected to compete with the Pirates on money.

It wasn’t only about money. He said the AAC played a big role, and he wouldn’t have come here to fail or be mediocre over options like Rhode Island. Clearly he thinks he can win a lot here and had been here for 8 years before so he should know the upside more than anyone.

It’s not about just doing better than Lebo either, you wouldn’t undergo this extreme rebuild to have to do better than Lebo. He’s already got fired after doing better than Lebo and with a winning overall record and by an AD that didn’t hire him, and came back knowing he’d have another AD that didn’t hire him too. That’s got to be in the back of his mind.
