2021-22 MBB - LA Tech @ Charlotte, 2/10 7:00 PM Stadium

clt says lofton is a nba bust

Great to see Paul ā€œUh Huhā€ tonight. It’s been a long time.

Spanky…

Braswell was off early in the game. His first two shots were wide open IIRC, and he missed both pretty badly. I’m not saying he doesn’t need to play more, but he didn’t start this game as red hot as he has been lately.

We missed too many shots and committed far too many turnovers to win. But we were tied / in a one point game when the refs called an arm bar shove of Aly as a defensive foul, when it clearly wasn’t (announcer team reversed themselves and agreed). That led to 2 LT points. Then on the next Charlotte possession, Aly did the exact same arm bar shove and was called for an offensive foul, and his bucket was erased. We had fans screaming ā€œthat’s the same playā€ clearly audible on the broadcast - if they are NNN posters, they were right). Then almost immediately after that, Willis (I think that’s his name) for La Tech launched a bad 3, landed, then a full second ticked off the clock before he pretended that a stray touch from Braswell knocked him to the floor. 3 FTs, which he made all of. The announcer team immediately picked up on this flop (I forgot that Threadgill rightly !! got called for / warned for flopping immediately before this). That was a 7 point swing in about 95 seconds or so. Ballgame. Despite our bad outside shooting and turnovers we were right there and capable of taking the game, but that stretch pretty much gave LT the cushion they needed to win.

I know a lot of fans hate ā€œblaming the refsā€. Probably because it absolves our team of their mistakes, but I think you have to criticize both. So I’ll continue do so when it’s warranted. This was the worst officiated game I’ve seen us play this season (omfg how many times did Lofton move his pivot foot which all should have been turnovers). Its the only time I’ve felt compelled to point it out. And I won’t pretend that it doesn’t offend me more when it’s on our home court. I felt like La Tech was being protected. You kind of expect this crap on the road, but not at home. Really frustrating.

I liked the heart we played most of the 2nd half with though. That felt like a team effort once Young decided to assert himself and fire up the rest of the guys (this is the way). It was at least entertaining outside of those officiating moments.

One other thing - Threadgill was dominant at times in 1 on 1 defensive situations. A real standout. Does not surprise me that Ron likes him so much. When he is shooting the ball well too, he is a huge positive on the court.

The dude who called the phantom foul on the three point shot at a critical juncture is named Doug Simmons. It woud be wrong to harass him in some untraceable way.

It is reprehensible when refs decide to have a little fun pissing off certain fans and, in the process, deny coaches and players the opportunity to decide the game fairly. You could see those assholes sniggering and gesturing toward a group of our fans during a late timeout. Grow up, gentlemen.

If he was there I’m ok I didn’t make it.

Ron Sanchez is on the bench, so I agree that is wanting of production. Can we get the fake cardboard Covid cutouts of people from other schools? Probably cheaper now. We could fill Halton to the roof. Hell, we could have cutouts in tents waiting to get their basketball tickets

Fire the referees, after you fire Sanchez

My wife and I thought we heard him once and looked for him but could not see nor did we hear him again so we thought we imagined it.

Great post NA.

clt looks forward to the AAC

I noticed that part of the job requirements for being a sideline reporter for Stadium must be to dress like a street hooker. Not that that is a bad thing.

Does the Observer have a Charlotte beat writer? Occasionally I see an article from Hunter Bailey but they are always behind the pay wall. Would love to see more pre and post game stories on the Niners. Maybe I would pay if that was the case.

Btw. Duke and Tarholes both have stories that are not behind the paywall.

Our battles with the Observer go back decades. Hunter is a significant step up from what we have had the last 10 years or so.

Sad to hear that his wife passed away recently. He had been taking care of her for a while so that’s why he hasn’t been around much. Glad to hear he was back on campus.

Uh huh is a legitimate living legend

Well, we got the moral victory and almost won, it had to have been those damn referees. Sanchez 2025!

Refs were bad, but the senseless turnovers lost the game. Seventeen of them and more than half were simple unforced. Then when a player decides they are going try to be the hero at times that doesn’t help.

At times I wonder if they wouldn’t be better off without the one v one mentality.

This has been common for awhile. Threadgill gave us basically nil vs WKU, yet still played 30 mins. I’m confused about it as well. I guess there’s 3 possible reasons. 1) Threadgill lights it up in practice. 2) Sanchez fills the need to give Threadgill the extra experience for the future. 3) Threadgill does things better defensively than Braswell that we can’t see. But if we could see an offensive player efficiency comparison between Braswell and Threadgill I don’t think there will be in contest.

At this point I’d also like to see us experiment with starting 2 bigs. I think Young, Butler and Khalifa should be locks as starters. While the other 2 positions should be experimented with.
