With a top 100 NET, and 64 other teams going to the NCAA tourny what even gets you in the NIT these days?
No fifth place team should earn a first round bye. If CUSA werenât so screwed up the bottom 3 teams would not qualify for an eight team tournament. Getting out of this mickey mouse operation will be a blessing.
Since the vast majority of conferences allow everyone to participate in their basketball tournaments - only the Ivy comes to mind as one that doesnât - then I guess mickey mouse pretty much describes the other 31 leagues, including the AAC.
And no fifth place, 500 team out of a conference should make the NCAAs but happens every single year.
And there will be a number of those from the P6 this year.
Probably a lot of Walmart fans who will tune in to watch. Since itâs not really determining a national champion or anything meaningful, I think popularity of the team & bringing enough fans who will watch the games is a big factor. Not saying thatâs the way it should be, but Iâm sure getting the most viewers possible is a huge factor.
Whatâs the point of giving a fifth place team a bye? That team will still play their first game against the fourth place team, just as they would in an eight team tournament. Now, if one of the last three in the standings wins the tournament, Iâll eat my words. That isnât going to happen.
I also donât care if every league lets every team play. CUSA is a mickey mouse league for so many other reasons, not the least of which is we donât play our tournament in an actual basketball arena.
The fifth place bye complaint is baffling to me. Do you guys understand that itâs just the result of having 11 teams in the league / tournament? There is no better way of doing it unless you kick out a team.
That was never on the table, so just go with it. Sheesh, it may even end up benefitting your program.
Something something gift horse - mouth.
Well, having that first day of the tournament with 6-11 playing does sell a few extra tickets, which is the point, I guess. The fact that WE could be the fifth place team doesnât change my opinion of the setup. As I said, we would still have to play the fourth place team on our first tournament day, so no real benefit above an eight team tournament.

UDM founded 1877 and largest Catholic university in Michigan.
Menâs basketball began playing in 1905-06. Joined Missouri Valley Conference in 1949 and stayed for 8 years. MVC mates included Houston, Oklahoma State, Saint Louis, Tulsa, and Wichita State.
After a period as an independent, joined what is now Horizon League in 1980 and has been a member ever since.
Post season includes:
NCAA - 1962, 1977, 1979, 1998, 1999, 2012
NIT - 7 appearances w/ 2013 most recent
BTW, that 1977 NCAAT team was coached by some guy named Dick Vitale. Beat Middle Tennessee in first round before losing to #1 Michigan by 5 points.
Most famous hoopsters:
Dave DeBusschere - too many accolades to list here but mostly known for NBA exploits - 2 time champ with NY Knicks, 8 time all-star, and Hall of Famer, including being named one of the â50 Greatest Players in NBA Historyâ in 1996. Also played a couple of seasons with Chicago White Sox as a pitcher!
Spencer Haywood - ditto re accolades. Began pro career in ABA with Denver before joining NBA. Championship with Lakers in 1980, jersey retired by Supersonics, 4 time NBA all star, and Hall of Famer. Also won Olympic gold with Team USA in 1968.
Earl Cureton - basically an NBA journeyman who won a couple of titles with 76ers and the Rockets. Spent time with the Hornets during a couple of stints in Charlotte.
And an infamous one:
Rashad Phillips - including here for his fairly recent wild hot take as an NBA Draft analyst:
Wow. Let me state it backwards now. Wow
I never wanted to know that.
Thanks for the effort. Hopefully that gets me a trivia prize if I ever make it to a retirement home

Some posters just canât be happyâŠâŠabout anything.
Well, I would be âhappyâ to explain the difference between observation and complaining, but the explaination would be as pointless as inviting an 11th place team to play in an 11 member conference tournament. Odds are that both are a total waste of time.
Edit: the implication in your post that I canât be happy about anything rankles me. Pretty sure my postive posts outnumber the negative ones by at least 5 to 1.
With all the parity in basketball it is not out of the question for ANY lower seeded team to beat a higher seeded team. Ask all the NCAA 1,2,3 and 4 seeds that fought for their lives or even lost to 15,14,13 and 12 seeds.
Giving kids that played hard all year a chance to play in the conference tournament gives them experience and a fighting chance to make the big dance.
One manâs humble observation.
And this is the reason why Greg Sankey wants to eliminate automatic bid for lower tiered conferences. He was angry his beloved Kentucky got eliminated by one those schools. Those P5 ADâs really donât like it when they arenât getting all of the monetary pie.
Okay so a lot of this shit has gotten a pass because the NCAA doesnât regulate football championshipsâŠ
But if this crap is allowed to happen in basketball, under the NCAAâs purview, you might as well tell the âP5â to GTFO. No way in hell should the other 250 or so schools agree to this crap. They should quite simply outvote him.
Niners know what they gotta do - win the CUSA Tournament to get into the dance. If they do, kudos. Iâm sure everybody would like to have a relevant Selection Sunday
If this plays out.
