2023-24 49er MBB Game #26 Charlotte @ Memphis 2/21 8:00 PM ESPN+

Oh just stop-----the refs actually had a HUGE impact on how this game went (and yes, that MAY well have impacted the outcome). It 100% set the tone early, which again, set the tone of the game. I mean, the refs missed a kicked ball on possession 1 of the 2nd half that lead directly to a 6 point possession that turned a 5 point game into an 11 point game. You really think THAT was not important to how the game turned out. 6 points on ONE possession that shouldn’t have occurred. Calling the kicked ball would have kept us with the ball instead of the transition bucket, foul and extra possession for 2 more points.

And what if we had maintained position and knocked down a 3. It’s a 2 point game vs 11.

Even a 2 point shot would have us within 3.

Memphis was allowed to play physical the whole game. Our team had to adjust to a different standard. Yes, it impacted their play.

Watch it again. Our team’s body language says it all. They were beat down. What could they do? Any reaction is a tech on us. Another bench tech may lead to an ejection.

We’ll be better from thole loss. Hill needs to send a message to HQ requesting a ā€œfair field of play.ā€ Not a single fan came to watch how well the officials can blow a whistle. It should be the players. Let them determine the outcome!

Only in Memphis would our leading scorer get 3 fouls within the 1st 3 minutes of the game and have to sit. He averages 14 points per game and he got 0 last night. Nice 14 point swing due to officiating.

Folkes shouldn’t have intentionally fouled him and if you are going to you don’t give up an And one. If you allow the basket it’s 2 points and no foul. If you foul and they don’t score it then it’s 1 or two points.

Patterson had 4 fouls and 0 points!!! Dishon Jackson needs more than 7 shot attempts. The refs were bad but it’s not the reason we lost. It was a 24 point loss!

You sound like a sore loser!

Not just 14 ppg, Cye has been averaging over 18 ppg over the last 6 or 7 games, and has been really consistent. Ever since that dud game against UTSA.

They absolutely removed our leading scorer from the game and it felt more than a little intentional.

David Jones was almost 12 points below his average and played a lot less minutes due to an injury.

Creighton beat UCONn by 19 at home. The huskies must have lost due to the refs.
Off nights due happen, especially in college. Refs can play a role but not in a game that spread out.

Judging from your comments, you didn’t really watch the game. we were down 8 mid-way through the 2nd half., At that point officiating had 100% accounted for MORE than 8 points difference…We didn’t score the last 4.5 minutes of the game, largely because we pulled our starters out with 4+ minutes to play. it was like a 12-13 point game at that point. The final margin was 24, but anyone watching knows it wasn’t like that was a ā€œ24 point gameā€ and yet you keep mentioning that like we were down 24 the whole game.

BS again-----Jones got poked in the eye with about 7-8 minutes to go. I WISH we had our leading scorer available until that point.

The graph tells the story. Officiating does matter or we would not have them on the court. It can, and sometimes does, impact the game.

I agree but I don’t think it is the main reason why we lost.

It would be hard to tell, but I think we’re leading at half time without the officiating bias. Other than officiating, I think rebounding would be the next biggest factor as why we lost. Also, they looked more aggressive and talented on offense. I like our chances with them again on a neutral court. You could see why they were ranked as high as #10 last night, but I think we can play with them. Missing the front end of 3? 4? 1 and 1s didn’t help either.

7-8 minutes left to go? Hahahaha

He got hurt with 16:40 left in the 2nd half!!!

Did you watch the game?

38-20 out rebounded and we gave up 14 offensive rebounds

Refs didn’t cost us the game. They weren’t great but we didn’t play well. The 6 point possession was just a boneheaded play. Can’t do that period.

Haven’t looked at the box score but we got out rebounded by a large margin. They got more to more loose balls and just out hustled us.

Sure I’ve seen refs influence games. Hell, I’m a Raider fan so I’m still pissed about the tuck rule. BUT, refs don’t get you beat by 24…

Thank you!

It was 56-44 at the midway point of the second half. That is 12 points and not 8.

The intensity of some of the responses on this topic :flushed:

I really hope we improve on the boards Saturday. The large number of offensive rebounds last night, 14, and 18 against UTSA are of concern. We did out rebound Tulsa by 18 last time. I think Fearne will have the team ready. I enjoyed his candor last night (ā€œGot our ass kickedā€) but seemed confident we’ll get things straight.

Win Saturday night and we’re in great shape heading into South Florida game on 3/2.

The die was cast before the 16:00 minute mark when the refs effectively eliminated our leading scorer from our team for the rest of the half. He then never got untracked even when he played in the second half and his terrible shots reflected his frustration.
DON’T LET THIS HAPPEN AT tulsa. We need to keep our cool and composure regardless of what trash talk they do or how physical they are. On the road, retaliation usually gets punished by the refs.
Plus we have to shoot and rebound much better. I think we will.

What came first? The chicken or the egg.
Did the officiating eventually break our spirit?
For me, the outcome was predictable in the first half. We were having to play twice as hard to keep up. Perhaps Memphis chose to play more physical and we did not. However, when we attempted to play a similar style, the whistle blew.

I hate to be a sore loser. My issue is, a foul should be a foul. It doesn’t matter how many fouls each team has, it’s still a foul. The score should not matter. Nor who the team is or player. Call the foul consistently the entirety of the game and season.

Fouls have become way too subjective and allows the officiating to overly influence the game depending on how they choose to determine a foul.

It’s frustrating for a player to get a foul called on them on one end and get fouled similarly on the other with no call. A foul ā€œshould be a foul.ā€

This game gave the appearance that Memphis established themselves.as.a.more physical team from the start so the officiating adjusted to their style. We did not get the same consideration.

At his point, I’m not sure any of us know what a foul is, other than ā€œit depends on what factors are being considered.ā€ Are they calling it loose or tight? And, it may change over the course of a game. It may be called one way for one team and different for the other.

There need to be more consistency and predictability. I certainly understand the frustration of players, coaches, and fans.
